Paved roads and some trails that are somewhat rocky. There are some that I've tried and would recommend to anyone, whether you're a beginner or a pro. You'll find them in the usatf.org website's homepage in the "America's Running Routes" link. After clicking on the map of the U.S., click on the "Find a route" link and then type in Huntington in the city window and click on New York in the state window. Then click search. On page one of the routes in Huntington you'll find the New York State Winter Series 5K route, which is a challenging 5K, although not as challenging as the 5K @ Sunken Meadow State Park. Another one I like is the Blue Devils 5.71er on page 4, where the author has you go to the one mile mark from the parking lot and back to the parking lot after completing the loop. You can use the website to create your own route once you become familiar with the park's numerous trails and roads. Enjoy!

They charge a $6.00 parking fee to park your car or you can use the Empire State Pass sticker and get in without the $6.00 fee (since you already paid for it with the purchase of the pass). I guess someone could probably drop you off at the toll house gate to avoid paying the $6.00 and come get you later. You should call to find out if that's okay (I can't see how that would be a problem, but I don't know).

Just one person's observations.

Edgewood Preserve off of Commack rd in Commack/Deer Park. If you look at the map it's sorta connected to Pilgrim State but there are a ton of trails to run on, all flat most people don't know its there.

Also, can anyone give some feedback on Connetquot State Park? Never ran in it before.

If you know where you are going its not bad but there is an awful lot of sand in the park. at least there was about two years ago. Id much rather go to sunken meadow personally.

There are trails behind ward melville that go on for a pretty long way, Ive been running on them for like five years now and still am not even close to bored of them. Theres some flat parts, some rolling parts and some hilly parts. Apparently they were made for bikers (are only one person wide at basically all times) and theres over 25 miles of trails there. I generally run from my house (about 4 miles, a little less) and then do a few in the trails and then go back.

Stillwell Woods. It's right across the street from Syosset HS. There are plenty of hills further in if you know where to go. If you get lost, the sun sets behind the HS so just follow it (if you're running in the afternoon). I love these trails, definitely my second home.

In HS we used to go on sunday runs in some trails across the street from the IHOP at the intersection of 25A and 106. I think its the Muttontown Preserve? Anyway, nothings better than pancakes after a long run :)

Norman Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick (Garbage Hill right off the meadow brook parkway) : Terrain is crushed shells/sand/dirt and you can get some good hill work

Cedar Creek Park in Seaford (Can run hills on the grass or you can run to Jones Beach on the Wantagh parkway path)
