For the upcoming track seasons, I was looking into ordering batons for our distance squad, but I wondered if there was a "best" baton. Is there a material that is the lightest or the best? Do I want plastic or aluminum? Is either more likely to slip out of a runner's hand?

Thanks

THIS IS TRIER!!

plastic usually feels kinda low quality IMO and we -whatever relay i was doing- chose never to use that. other than that i dont really have much of an idea.

edit: i usually did relays no longer than 4x400m, considering you said "distance"

Those ones are my favorite, I've used 'em for 800s and 400s and not even noticed them. They're really light and they have a nice feel to them.

Kind of a bump...

Does anyone know what kind of baton most teams are using now. I've seen a lot of ones that aren't the usual aluminum, but I'm not sure what they are. They look plastic, but I don't think that is it either. Are they carbon fiber? Any help please?

i have only come in contact with aluminum and plastic ones for actual meet use. however, there are different surfaces of aluminum. my track team had 5 different types last year. the first two types are plastic and wood (rofl at having wood batons around). then we had 3 different aluminum ones:

there are the smooth and shiny ones posted before.

there are these ones with a slightly scratched-like surface (these are very very light and i feel more secure in the grip than the smooth ones): http://www.robbinssports.com/sporting-goods-store/index.php?main_page=product_reviews&manufacturers_id=97&products_id=6107&number_of_uploads=0

then there are these rougher-looking ones which feel slight bit heavier that google is failing me in locating now. i think these might be the ones you are talking about. if that is the case, they are just aluminum. they are nice, but i feel they are not any better (especially for distance running) than any other baton.

sorry i cant locate the last type. hope this helps!
