Top program in the country for throws. Coach Cowper is one of the absolute best coaches around, Sam should do really well there. Great job.

They're D1 in skiing only (both alpine and nordic), Bates, Middlebury and Williams are also D3 schools that are D1 in skiing. D3 skiing is kind of a joke, so its not really a big deal.

Kids could have also taken a PG year this year, meaning they were '09 HS graduates, but are applying/committing to college this year (for '14 graduation).

There's another kid from the Hanover xc crew who has chosen/gotten in to a school.

People apply to the most competitive schools early decision or early action.

State schools have rolling admissions or later application deadlines.

The Early Decision/Early Action applications will also tend to be to wealthier applicants who can afford to take the aid package that comes from the college they get into.

You're in big trouble if you can't even afford the books... There are plenty of people out there, though, who can afford tuition at private schools, otherwise they wouldn't be charging it. (not that this is the place to be discussing people's personal finances)

I go to a D2 school...I would have paid $1,100 for a year for books (though getting them online helps) This is out of my pocket that i've gained through working basically minimum wage. Don't think books are only expensive at D1/Ivy league schools:rolleyes:

Plus my brother goes to an Ivy league school. Going to an Ivy is not that much of a burden as its cracked up to be, even if it and my tuition will empty my parent's bank accounts...Hell even Harvard is offering free tuition to kids if their family is really financially deficient.

As to the fact that only prestigous schools are mention here. This is false. Tons of kids stay local at UML or another "tier 2" local school. Also better kids in hs will attract attention from noticable schools with budgets to recuit. Smaller schools without a budget dont necessarily get kids to recruit. Finally, if kids are interested in track and post on these boards, they are more likely "good"....so they'll get more interest. Certainly correlation does not mean causation though.

Yale is free if your parents make less than $100,000 a year and pretty cheap even if they make up to 200/250k a year. Harvard and Princeton are pretty much the same, and most other Ivies have very good financial aid packages as well.

State XC Champion Patrick McGowan of Mansfield and 3rd place Jared Reddy of Methuen have both verbally committed to UMASS. Coach O"Brien made them a great offer. The runner-up, Anthony Taylor of Arlington might also be in the mix.

If they grab Taylor, thats an awesome job by UMASS getting 1-2-3 from the state championship @ Northfield.
