my coach told me today, that there is a cream that you can get in Europe, but you cant bring it in to the States, that if applyed to the shins will eliminate shin splints almost emideatle (sp). He ran for Tulsa, and he said that there were some norweagans on his team that used it. sounds crazy

Yeah, I'm suffering from shin splints pretty bad as well, been having them for quite awhile now. I run mid-distance, so it's starting to get a little old now running everyday & having this unbearable pain each time running. I've been doing the whole icing & stretching thing every single day & all the other things to supposedly "help" & taking a couple of days off, but yet they are still there. Ahhh!! Any help or ideas?

I had shin splints in HS pretty bad (my HS has a really hard track). Just taking ibuprofen helped a lot. If my shins were hurting pretty bad, I would take about 800mg about an hour before practice and the pain would be almost all gone.

This won't do you much help right now, but for future seasons it will. The best way to deal with shin splints is in the off season. Stretching your calves and shin muscles before and after every workout is key. Also a great strengthening exercise is to sit on a bench with the end of your legs hanging just over the edge. Attach some weights to your feet and then flew them, bringing your toe towards your shin, then relaxing. Throwing a couple sets of these into your weight lifting workouts will do wonders for your shins come track season.

thanks! that sounds like some good advice that i'll prolly try this summer..

also, what has helped me recently.. TIGER BALM.. i dunno if any of you have heard of it.. if not.. its kinda like icy hot.. you rub it on ur mucles.. and it brings blood to them.. i think..

anyways.. its like a miracle cream.. the pain went away TOTALLY..

Well if there is such a cream I definately want to get some! Shin splints are soo painful! Jumping hurts them more then anything also but I dont want to give it up! I ice soo much but they dont seem to be getting any better! I never get them any other season....like xc or anything! why?

I have shin splints right now in my jumping leg. I think it's from my shoes though cause they were getting kinda old. I got new ones the other day and they seem to be slowly getting better.

I have had shin splints for about 4 years i have tried everything, stretching and icing, the works. My friend gave me thse wraps that have a dense foam or somehting pad that you put right over the tibia. the rest is neoprene with velcro to keep it tight. Wear these when you train and evne compete. They are great for preventon. I guess they hep keep the muscle on the shin reduces some pain. They cost like $50 and are awesome. You should still ice and stretch when you are done but they have helped me a lot. You can get them at most running stores and online in a bunch of places.

I agree with sundevilstud...ibprofen helps out alot. I took a couple of pills and the pain was gone.

if ibprofen is enough to cure you of shin splint pain.. trust me.. u dont really have shin splints, at least not full blown ones

anyways.. an update on me.. my shin splints are finally gone.. or at least dormant.. my shins still hurt a little jumping, but nothing that really affects my training or cometition :)

I use Ibeprofen after you get stronger if you do the right exercises they will start getting better and be really hard to get.
