since the state thread is getting insanely long over mac being a "guarantee" win in the mile and two mile, i wonder what everyone else thinks, many people agree don sage was obviously a better track runner than xc, but since all this hype about mac in the national 2 mile field and him doubling at state, is he better in xc or track, i think he ranks nationally in the two mile about even what he did in xc, thoughts?

He is definitely better at Track....very Sage like...but I suppose this spring will prove it. But last years results were sided more towards his spring results.

mac is an awesome 3200 guy. but i would lean more towards being a better xc runner. he ran awful at FL, but i can only see 4-5 guys (if they raced 100 times) beating him on any type of regular basis. same goes for the 3200. but once he starts to run shorter races he become a little more human. sage culd split 48pt, and go sub 1:50, 4:00, and 8:42. I'm pretty sure he was the greatest track runner (distance-wise) our state will ever see for a long long time. i say he's better in xc. only because he can't throw down a great 400/800 to compliment his 2 mile.

while i agree that york is the best distance program in the state, and arguably in the country, i think that the injuries of a lot their top guys should raise the question: are they overtraining those guys up there?
TArnold going to be running anytime this spring?
Arnold ran a 9:51 or something.

Every year since WAY BACK.. somebody would talk about how NEWTON overtrains his guys. Now Newton isn't even there and the York kids are overtraining. Amazing stuff. There's a fine line between being great and being tired. Most people won't try hard enough to become great for fear of "Overtraining"...

Well, it appears to me that fear of overtraining may not be a choice in some situations. In my case, I badly overtrained and messed up my entire high school career. Ever since then, it has been a great challenge to put in high quality training for fear of making the same mistakes again. It's like an unconscious barrier has been set up. Ask anyone who has gone through insane burnout--it's hard to jump back in.
Maybe Newton burns his kids out; maybe they burn themselves out trying to make it onto a talented team. Either way, lack of improvement might not be because of decreased desire.

It's not like he throws you into 1000 mile summers and makes you go out on 10+ (or whatever thsoe machines at york do) runs, he builds you up there. I think the problem when people overtrain is that they do to much after doing not enough and expect to get better. You cant just run a 1000 mile summer after doing 500 the previous year. Just because you run for york and are on the Top 7 doesnt mean that you have to do great things in college either. There have been alot of better runners who have done less in college, and to claim that York overtrains doesnt really seem like a fair assesment.

Newton sometimes even goes the exact opposite diection; he won't let the lowest freshman group run more than about a 1/2 mile at a time at the beginning even if they want to.
And about why they might not improve as much in college as some other people: Other people who don't reach their potential in High School have alot more room for improvement, whereas Newton brings out the best in them during high school. Also, most of these guys are good BECAUSE OF Newton; and in many cases, he is the reason they are running at all; then when they don't have him, they do not do as well.
People who complain about him are just trying to find excuses why they are not as good. The "coaches" at my high school always talk bad about Mr. Newton, but they have never coached any decently good teams.

I definitly agree. When you run at York for a coach like Newton, it is pretty comparable to running at a div. 1 or 2 college. That's why they might not improve as much as others after high school :o

I'm sure some of those York guys have tons of talent like marchese and the dettmans and mac. but i'm sure there are a ton of guys running nice times who are what they are because after 4 years of running in "the program" they have put in 2500 more miles than any other senior in the state. I know for a fact that guys like David Kikuchi, Josh Sharko, and Mark Fruin, (this is old school research i've done) ran some very mediocre times during their earlier years. I mean none of those guys were running anywhere close to all-state times when they were freshman or sophomores. but 1000 miles junior and senior year put kikuchi 15th in the state, sharko at 32nd and fruin 4th in the 2 mile. I'm not upset that these runners haven't done "more" with their talent and gone on to be studs in college. They got a whole lot out of the talent they had. an that is a credit to the program. only the talents of hobbs, sage, mcanamara, will go on to do amazing things in colleg. because their talent knows no bounds.

Great post! However, I would not count Fruin out yet. He has a lot of talent that I think will show up at Indiana.
