I think Dane Zeiler. This guy seemed like he had so much potential his soph year. 3rd in xc and 2nd in the mile. What about other runners?

I have talked to him a couple of times, hes a nice kid, i thought he would take class A XC and mile two years in a row, as he was the top returner in each. Last year I dunno what happened to him. I remember Palatine invited him to their big invite just so he could get some good competition cuz he lives so far, but injuries have killed him.

Gerrado Herrera for a couple of years ago.

Also Sam Romanowski......on a side note anybody know what happened to Ryan Young?

Sam Romanowski had a bad Sr....assuming still being 3rd in XC after being 2nd is really all that bad, but he still is not a horrible runner. He's run solid enough times at Loyola since. People get it in their head that the guy is a god, and when he performs poorly, they assume he's a crappy runner. The same could be said for Ryan Gasper from Wisconin, qualifying his Jr. year and being like wayyyyy off the next year. That didn't make the guy good, but he was definitely not a footlocker quality guy, and IMO, neither was Romanowski, but the kid ran like hell his jr. year post season. On a side note, I love his online journal on illinoisrunner.com his Sr. year of track talking about how he'd take journals all the way to the state meet....and then he just missed qualifying....how ironic.

Well he agreed to do those journals prior to hurting his back while sleeping on a cot at prom.

Two summers ago, before his junior year, i was running alone on this trail in my town and I ran into this guy along the way and started running with him. After about 4 more miles he told me he was Dane Zeiler which really surprised me because Highland Park is very far from wherever he is from. He was a really nice guy though and said he wanted to win state and then when cross country came around i didnt see any results from him.

Why a negative thread that dwells on guys who went downhill? Why not a thread about guys who improved greatly, thus inspiring younger viewers to greater heights as they will be counted upon to do battle with the Mongol hordes of NY and NJ?

On the positive note, Dave Carlson from McHenry, now a junior at Eastern Illinois, ran a 29:29 10k at Stanford on March 26.That's 4:43/1600 from a guy who I'm pretty sure didn't break 9:40 at McHenry. Oh, and he beat one of his Fox Valley rivals, Sam Romanoski, who managed a 29:37 (both are NCAA provisional qualifying times).

Sam had lots of trouble with pneumonia and mono in cross country, and still got third in state, even though he was sick as a dog. At FL regionals he got like 18th and he was in an ambulance for an hour afterwards. He was a tough runner, the toughest i have ever seen, and yet people are saying he went downhill. He had a rough year in track, but he was running hurt half the season. He only lost by two seconds to WITHROW and seven seconds to Pifer his last season in cross country, third place by that margin to those two runners is by no means a disappointment.

Sam is still a great runner, but he was coming of an All American year finishing 14th in the nation, only to come in 18th at midwest. He still did good, theres no denying that, but he was really the 3rd fastest guy in the nation coming back from nationals, and with Dalpiaz not running, he was really the 2nd, so it is somewhat of a disapointment. He was on school sports and they talked him up alot too, so he had alot of high expectations that he failed to meet. Still a very good runner though.

Alex Yount. He had extreme potential his first 2 years, then I THINK injury kept him back in his final years--I may be wrong. Can any of you LT guys testify to this?

Moy hasnt lived up to the hype since being touted as the best freshman a couple years ago. McCann had that awesome freshman race in cross at state and then didnt do much til his senior year. And then the whole thing that happened last fall at U of I.

Yount developed planter faiscitis. I think it was his sophomore year. He was fine after that. He just couldn't mentally put it thgether after that.

Patrick Tomasiewicz, As a sophmore he ran 2:00 in the Open 800 meter dash. Since then he has barely run, using his time to become and allstar photographer, and and expert on the printing press. He does get some credit for breaking 60 in a 400 meter time trial a few weeks ago.

How did you go from running 18:30something at the Palatine Invitationaal in cross country to 2:00 800m? (The only reason I know that is you are right next to me in the results.)

brian marchese ran high 18s for the palatine cross country invite freshman 2.5 mile race. next year he was a 920 two miler and state qualifier in the mile. Thats the best improvement ive ever seen.

What happened to the Jellema kid from a few years ago? Wasn't he like top 15 at FLMW, then didn't even run in college?

Also Sam Romanowski......

All I know is that Romonowski is a class act. I remember him shaking my hand at the end of state 02' CC meet at the finish line. I think he did this for everybody. Game-on Romo, game-on.

You should have seen him when he didn't finish well, it was a whole different story.

well i dont think u would want to shake everyones hand either if you finished poorly. plus it would be kinda weird for someone to congratulate everyone, if they themself didnt do well. but its always respectable for the top finishers to congratulate others.
