Ok, it's time to talk about them again. I still don't know what grades all their guys are in! Is Luke Wiltshire a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior? I've heard all 3!
Here are some of their best times from non-seniors:
800m:
Kenny Klotz, Junior, 1:54.39
Taylor Morgan, Freshman, 1:56.16
Luke Wiltshire, Sophomore?, 1:56.90
Sam Wotipka, Sophomore, 2:00.75a
David Beltramo, Sophomore, 2:02.44a
1500m:
Kenny Klotz, Junior, 3:57.31
Luke Wiltshire, Sophomore?, 4:09.8
Sam Wotipka, Sophomore, 4:11.80
David Beltramo, Sophomore, 4:14.48a
Taylor Morgan, Freshman, 4:18.06a
3000m:
Kenny Klotz, Junior, 8:27.4c
Sam Wotipka, Sophomore, 9:13.7
Luke Wiltshire, Sophomore?, 9:24.00a
This team looks a lot like Ferris did coming into Cross Country. Thoughts? I know that we all know Central Catholic is a great team already, but I figured I would see what other people thought of how they will do next year, and whether or not Luke Wiltshire is a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or what.

hmm, didn't know that. Explains why he could run 16:19 at state as a frosh. How do you know? I guess you're just doing non-seniors in that listing, but Sam Torrey has run a 9:12 and Stephen Oliver's run some flying times as well. They could have a killer 4 x 8 team, and that Taylor Morgan kid is insane. 1:56 as a frosh is state record breaking material.
They're returning xc times are something like this(not nearly as impressive)
Klotz 15:35
Wiltshire 16:02
Beltramo 16:43(at state, which in a flatter, non-muddy course might be closer to 16:20)
Wotipka 16:47
I don't think Morgan ran xc

Yes, I was only listing non-seniors. Think they have a shot at making NTN?

It seems if Morgan does cross country and turns out pretty good, they should have a shot. In terms or Oregon teams, the field isn't going to be that good next year. We're losing a huge, very talented senior class. I don't know about Washington teams though. Mead'll be good, and if there's one more, i don't know if they'll be good enough to get one of the at large spots. It'll be interesting to see though, they've got some great coaching.

For the Washington teams....
Mead should be very good again next year.
Ferris loses 3 of their 5 guys that broke 16 at state this year, and their #7.
Eisenhower will have nothing next year, losing their top 4.
Auburn-Riverside loses their allstar runner that didn't compete for most the season this year, and their #3,4,6,7,8 runners.
It will be interesting to see who steps it up next year and competes well, but I think the NW will get 3 bids next year. Mead will get in, and then a 3-or 4-way race between Central Catholic, Jesuit, and a surprise team for the other 2 spots.

Central is almost a lock for NTN if they stay healthy. they were set up this year for it and Oliver went down at state. if he finished in the top 5, which he did as a junior and this year he beat klotz at every race all year. they would have been within 10 points of Jesuit and would have been in NTN.
Jesuit's road is unknown they have young kids running fast this spring but they have not been the front runners in the fall.
I am pretty sure that the Mead boys will be back at NTN

I think someone from Mead is going to have to step up and be their "ace" if they want to get back to NTN. But someone always does for them, so I have faith.

I think Central Catholic and Mead are the only two possiblities for NTN this year, unless someone else steps up to the plate (Jesuit? Probably some Oregon team), so I dont' think Mead really needs another bigtime frontrunner to stay competitive.

Hermiston, from Oregon might have a shot at it. They're losing their 1 and 2 guys, but they'll have a strong front three.
11 Justin Dean 16:07
10 Walter Juarez 16:09
10 Kersee Lind 16:26
10 Krieg Mueller ? (17:18 at state, so probably high 16's)
10 Ryan Barton ? (17:51 at state, so mid-low 17's)
Not astounding, but they could be good, especially if they can get those 4th and 5th guys up. And if not next year, since four of those guys are sophomores, then in two years they could be a powerhouse as well. Crater also has a strong top 2/3
11 Isaac Stoutenburg 15:13
10 Jake Keyser 15:47
11 Caleb Jacobsen 16:52
But I don't know where there next two guys would come from

He's not coaching for them anymore. They still have a really good coach though, he's been working under Salazar for a while.

Volunteer Assistant Distance Coach or something crazy like that. He may or may not get a job there next year, but I'm pretty sure he'll get a job there next year. You get an opportunity to hire an alum as successful and popular as Tyson (who roomed with Steve at that), you take it.

As noted above, Tyson's got the "volunteer" job at UofO and has received an official leave of absence from his teaching job at Mead. Now, most teacher leave-of-absence requirements are that you can't go work somewhere else for money, otherwise, you forfeit your leave. My bet - he's receiving some "endorsement" money from somewhere, enabling him to not have to draw a salary from either the school district or from UofO....either that, or he's saved a lot of money...
Of course, Tyson has stated that he'd sleep in the street if it meant that he could coach at UofO. Maybe he's back in the same trailer that he and Pre used to live in....
Also, UofO women's distance coach Marnie Mason has resigned, effective at the end of the season. She was very successful coaching in the HS ranks, down at Klamath Falls (I think)...she was also a top Oregon prep runner in the 80s - she took the job when Heinonen "retired" - Martin Smith hired her.
My bet? UofO is looking for a high profile head coach who will do two things, 1) continue to attract top athletes across all aspects of track and field, and 2) not forget that the roots of UofO track are in distance events and their strong connection to the community.
I've heard that Lawson might be the pick, although, he's been relieved of coaching jumpers, and now only coaches the multi-events. So, I think that rumor is wrong (I hope).
Vin Lananna would be a great fit - high profile, great recruiter, understands the whole "grass roots" thing. Also understands the Eugene mystique.
McConnell would never leave Arkansas....not even for Oregon.
Whatever the case, I'd be surprised to see Tyson back at Mead - I'm betting on him to be the full-time paid distance coach, and maybe even head XC coach...depending on who they hire for the track position.
My $0.02.

Dave Frank is the head coach at Central Catholic. Good guy. Salazar assisted while Rupp was there, and I believe he is still helping out Dave with their stable of runners. Of course, Al is still working The Oregon Project, and other individual HS runners as well (he was also coaching a couple of other metro area distance runners while at Central Catholic).
Dave Frank was quite a good HS runner in the late 70s/early 80s. He won AAA Oregon state titles (back then, it was AA) in events ranging from the 800 to the 3000.
Just a quick check - I netted these results:
1979 3000m 8:44.8 state champ
1980 800m 1:55.3 state champ
1980 1500m 3:56.4 state champ
He was coached by Wes Cook while at Gladstone, who eventually moved on to coach at George Fox College in Newberg, OR. Wes Cook is Toby Cook's dad - another early/mid 80s state champion from Oregon (81/82/83 1500m, 82/83 800m).
