I can only throw in Nike rotationals, In shot I do the glide but want to spin, no coach knows the shot spin well enough to coach me.

No Kidding. I tried my hand at Spin in the Shot (Im solid at discus for my size. (130 lbs, 110 foot P.R.) and it was night and day comparing discus with shotput. I dont feel like I get that drive out of my legs when I try spin, and it's hard to know what you need to change within the form to improve it.

I don't get it, why can I spin in the discus so great and not have a clue in shot. My pr in discus as soph was 162'5, in shot with spin only 40', with glide it is just 45' pretty weak compared to my discus.

One thing with Disc is spin speed is so much more important than in Shot. If you think of it like a track.... The farther outside you are, the faster you have to run to finish a lap in the same time someone on an inside lane ran it in. (that's why they stagger starts; to compensate for the extra distance.)
Basically, this means a guy with arms that are 3 feet long can throw a discus farther than a guy with arms 2.5 feet long, cause the discus is moving faster.
Unfortunately, this long-arm advantage doesn't translate over to Shotput :p

Well in all techincal speaking yes the height matters and so does arm length. If you have ever watched Nascar or any car racing. At bigger tracks with high banking the drivers get on the high lane to keep up RPMs and when they come off the corner they had about 3 to 4 miles an hour advantage. Same in the spin. But as for the glide all the height and arm length matter as well. If you look at the height the heigher you are the less force you have to apply to get a good throw. But with the the arm length the longer arm the more distance and time you apply on the shot therefore more power. P=DT power=distance*time essentially. Trust me i know I am 6'11 1/2'' and with an arm span of over 7'0'' feet and one arm being 3'5'' long. and a competior i competed against was about 6'10'' with an arm span of 6'0'' and with the same technique I threw about 10 feet futher. Once I figured this out and gave into it I know throw the 16 lb over 55 feet and the discus2.0kg 190 feet.

What are your lifts? Because i threw 140'10" in disc, but only 39'9" in the shot, with amazing technique in both, but i was only benching 175. The bench really is my weak lift :(. You need more strength for the shotput than the discus. The discus can be thrown with speed and technique, as well as some strength, but the shotput requires more strength.

nikes were the only shoes i could find at the time when i bought them. i glide for the shot but only because my school wont hire a real throws coach (currently its a football coach whos never thrown before) i throw discus, too but am somewhat limited by my height (im 5'4" and have never seen a shorter thrower)

I have just started doing real lifts and I am pretty weak too, my pr in bench is finally up to 250, but most throwers at big meets are lifting over 300lbs. I am 6'2" but my reach is 6'8", gives me a bit better toss. I only weigh 197 though, small for a thrower so technique is key for me.
Statechamp03: What were your prs in high school? You are one big thrower.

Hey statechamp, one of your posts claims you are Justin White of McMinn County high, is that correct?? I looked up the results of some track meets and at the Best of the Preps April 2005 Justin only threw the 12# shot 44'9" and the high school 1.6kg discus 117'11". You want me to believe that now you are throwing 55 with a 16# shot and 190 with a 2kg discus?? Is there another Justin White? At the Tennessee State meet a Justin White threw the 12# 43' and got 8th, and did not compete in the discus. What's up with that???

Yes that is me. I am Justin White from McMinn County. Now I am in college. I go to East Tennessee State University. I am working with the best weight Coach in the Nation Dr. Mike Stone and I am also working with Meg Stone who holds the current collegiate records in the Shot Put and Discus in girls. I began lifting about 2 weeks after that state meet in which i threw 43.5 or something like that. Anyways now with the weights I am at 475lb on squat, 400lb on the bench, doing about 250 overhead squat, and 300 military press. With that i have practiced 4 times a week. I started at about 40 then slowly i have progressed to 55 right now in the shot and the discus throw is the same i started throwing about 100 and now with progression i am now at 185 190. I have just spent a lot of time in the weight room. And I am now a firm believer that the weights pay a big role. Sorry if i wasnt clear the first time.

Wow, man you are my hero, it is tough enough to go from 1.6 to 2k, but you have added 70 feet to your best ever. Your coaches must be awesome. Adding 4 pounds to the shot put and adding 12 feet to your toss. I must say it sounds impossible, unnatural. I would add that I don't think anyone in the history of track and field has ever had such remarkable growth in throwing events their first year in college, in fact many great throwers struggle and red shirt their first year. Thanks for the update I will be watching your progress this year, I am still in high school and still pretty weak but those marks you have so early will definitely get you the NCAA championships your freshman year.
Were you ever state champ??

No and I will admit to it. I am not one. I lost and finished 8th in 2005. My name is just one i thought up statechamp and the number stands for my greatest idol ever Dale Earnhardt. I orginialy put 3 but someone had taken it. So i put 03 instead. Anyways I wish i was. But I just have this name. I also created it before I graduated high school. Thanks for asking in poletiely manner.

I gotta go with the addidas....This year I have the solid blue rotationals. I use them for discus and I just started spinning in the shot. The reason I like addidas is because of the rough bottoms for balance. I model my discus technique exactly from the olympic thrower Robert Fazekas. If yall haven't watched you should. You can find videos of him and other great throwers at www.throwfarther.org.
yeah statechamp....overhead squats.....you can feel those when you get out of bed the next day....well since everyone is puttin out their lifts i guess I'll do the same....I'm 6'1 205.....Bench Press-315. Parallel Squat- 480. And my vertical is about 33 or 34 from all the olympic lifts they are awesome for your exsplosiveness and body strength. It also helped my broad jump to go from 7-11 to 9-1 in 1 year. see yall later.

Hey Tabortiger, any relation to the Tabor that keeps beating me in the discus at JO nationals every year, like in Miami, Eugene, and last but not least Indi??? You have great form, but I am lifting now and one of these days... may take until college, but we will definitely meet again. Have a great year. What do you do in the off season?? There are two of you I think you are cousins but look like brothers.

yeah thats me...I am Geoffrey Tabor and my cousin is Sean Tabor. He is a year younger than me. Yeah I went to all those JO meets and I finally got my first gold at Indy....In the offseason I just lift weights 3 times a week usually. I do upper and lower body monday, wednesday, and friday. I've been practicing the spin in the shot and thats about all I've been doing. My coaches really wanted me to play defensive end or weakside linebacker this year but I just don't want to risk the injury and not getting a chance to throw in college. but yeah thats about it......yeah but what's your name I'll prolly remember you from the JO's.

My name is Jake Fuller. I thought that was you. Are you a sophomore this year?? I am a junior. I did not play football either they wanted me to be a tight end but i just don't want to risk it on that sport. It drives the coaches crazy, but they are finally laying off. I remember your cousin too, he got me this year, I scratched my last throw in pre lims leaving me out of the finals in tenth. I threw about 160' but that ring was slick for me I just spun right out of the end of it. I did ok in hamer and jav, 4th and 5th, but my shot fell apart, too early for me. You coming out to Arcadia this year? or the Golden West. I am going to Europe with my AP classes and probably won't go to Boston for JO's. Thanks for the info.
