I have a yogurt/fruit shake after I run almost every day. Dude they give me SO much energy, and totally revitalize me. You'll want some kind of protein/carbo mix, I think it's 3:4 ratio?
Anyways, put vanilla yogurt, frozen fruit, strawberries, half a banana, OJ, and ice in the blender, (minus or plus anything, doesn't really matter too much), and it comes out fricken good. Trust me.

no poptarts are not good for you. i had the same experience as you, and i've discovered that pb and j's, tostitos, and pretzels are great snacks that won't mess up your running

3:4 ratio of protein to carbs is too high for optimal recovery. It is more like 1:4.

yea 4:1 carbs to protein is it, found in endurox powder mix, or just a boost, ensure or slimfast drink
as for snacks, i stopped eating sweets this track season and have used nutri-grain bars and honeyandoat bars to replace, also bowl of cereal keeps me from eating a whole stack of cookies

All right, I just tried this between the 1500 and the 3000 in a double, and it worked wonders:
1 blueberry yogurt
1 orange
1 banana
1 cup orange juice
1 egg white (add a bit more protein ;) )
Blend this all up and it's good to go. Tastes pretty good too.

why would you need to eat so much between relatively small doubles, a 1500m and 3000m arent all that long.
Unless you had about 3-4 hours in between all yu would need is a powerbar or granola bar and a lil gatorade

for me, pepperridge farm goldfish do the trick.
i eat so many of them-up to an 11 ounce bag per day.
maybe not the best snack, but i get them really cheap, and they do provide a source of carbs..

what you do is the night before the race DON'T HAVE ANY CARBS!!! have some like pasta or sumthing. the next morning, have some like well, oohhhh, recess cereal or something with a lot of carbs. i do a lot of triathlons and i learned that this does help a lot!! this gives you an extra shot of energy right before the race.
also a fruity type of smoothie will do well also, like a jamba juice or planet smoothie, not a frappachino though that hurts you later in the race!!

800 Runner you should wait until you're in High School before posting here again, or at least until you learn how to type coherent sentences. In case you don't know what 'coherent' means, it means READABLE and actually MAKES SENSE. Thank you.

I go with a Pear cup (usually dole), and some wheat thins as well as Gatorade a few hours before the race. It has worked pretty well for Cross as well as Track.

Eat a Clifbar.
But really, I can never eat anything within 3 hours of a run or else I die, so most of my pigging comes after the run... like bagels and yogurt and grilled cheese sandwiches and chocolate milk.

Ok, guys. Everyday at school I buy lunch. I used to eat two pieces of pizza, a powerade, and a decent sized chocolate chip cookie(freshly made at school, I'd say about 4 inches in diameter). Now, I've gone to one piece of pizza, a 20 oz. water and 2 of those cookies. I know it's bad, but I can't stop. Any ideas and is this lunch really having a negative effect on my running?

I ran my PR of 15:42 at my Conference meet in Cross Country after eating a chocolate chip cookie for lunch but haven't done so since. My times haven't been the greatest since then so maybe I should go back. I'd say stick with maybe a cookie but drop the other one and the pizza and get yourself a sub, or a PBJ man!

I think you guys are looking too much into this, personally i believe as long as you don't eat something ridiculous and right before your race you should be fine. And as for snacks, as long as you don't over do it they aren't really gonna hurt you because your gonna burn it off anyway. I say indulge on a snack once in awhile, i doubt a debbie cake is gonna be the deciding factor of whether you run a 10:30 or a 9:50. Then again thats just my two cents.

Assorted nuts are good, almonds especially. They help the body recover after runs as well. Trail mix is good too.

are fruit rollups good? i eat like a box or so a day, and i dont really know if they are hindering my performance let me get some nutrition facts,
serving size is 1 roll, and there are 10 rolls in each box
there are 50 calories per serving
5 from fat
and the % daily value for
total fat is 1%
saturated fat 0%
trans Fat 0 grams (0%?)
Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
Sodium 55mg 2%
Total Carbohydrate 12g 4%
Sugars 7 g
Protein 0 grams
Vitamin C 25%
in small print it says not a significant source of dietary fiber, vitamin A calcium and iron.
*percent daily values based on a 2000 calorie diet
Ingredients-Pears from concentrate, corn syrup, dried corn syrup, sugar, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, citric acid, sodium citrate, pectin, distilled monoglycerides, mailc acid, vitamin c (ascorbic acid) acetylated mono and diglycerides, natural flavor, color (red40, yellow 5&6 blue 1, red 3)
also, how much does dr. pepper hinder performance, i usually drink one before school and one at dinner, so that i can stay up and complete my homework easily (mainly for the caffeine)
i also hear emergen-c is good, i want to try some, but i dont know where to buy it.
thanks

totally disagree. its not one debbie cake, but one here means one there. i try to eat extremely healthy (does not mean i don't eat a lot-- i eat more than most of my friends) and this is definitley what took my running up a notch. and by notch i mean from 10:27-9:44 (~10:30-9:50? )
i never eat fast food, never drink soda, no bad snacks (no chips, twinkies candy, etc.)
diet consists mainly of grilled chicken and meat, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, Naked Juice :) , yogurt, nuts, various assorted KASHI products :) , just had some organic pizza from trader joes

IDK so much about that...I think it relates more to your lifestyle. If you are super healthy eater, you're also probably a lot more aware of how your body feels so you probably get more rest, know how much to train, etc. If you're serious enough to cut out junk food and whatnot, you're also probably pretty serious about your running. I doubt that jump to 9:44 came just from healthy food ya know? I'm sure it helped your body stay strong and recover well, but in certain areas it's hard to eat right like that, ie. Wisco. It's super cold in the winter so there isn't really cheap fresh produce like you most likely have in CA, and in my town there's a tiny little grocery store. If they don't have it, you're not getting it...ie. organic pizza and other non-mainstream foods.

If you ar putting away a box a day, that means that you are taking in 70g of sugar frome fruit roll-ups alone.
Add in the Dr. Peppers and that is 27g of sugar for every 8 oz. (You didn't specify the size of the Dr. Peppers). Assuming that the Dr. Peppers are just 12 oz. cans, that is 24 oz. of Dr. Pepper, which is 81g of sugar from those.
Add the two together, and you are taking 151g of refined sugar(read: bad for you), and thats not counting the other stuff you eat.

Thats all good, but i still say you got to live a little. Also, i doubt that cutting out bad foods is soley responsible for your time dropping so much. And i hope your not getting the wrong picture about me, i don't eat pizza, fries, and hamburgers every day despite it being the only thing served in my cafeteria. I make my own sandwiches everyday coupled with some pretzels and gatorade. So don't think im some fatass packing back bags of doritos. Im just sayin that if once in a while you feel the urge to have a piece of cake or some sugary cereal than go for it, its not gonna kill your running.

PB&J is a great pre-race snack. You get a little boost of sugar from the jelly, some protein from the peanut butter, and carbs from the bread.

Eat smart and you'll be fine. For runners, food is fuel and getting enough/the right kind is important for having energy and properly recovering for workouts and races.
It's not a golden key to success though...but then again nothing in running really is, right?

i meant the emergen-c as like a recovery drink
and over christmas i am not going to be eat fruit rollups, and try not to after christmas
and i will probably quit drinking dr. pepper over christmas too.
thanks everyone do u think that like saltine or club crackers or tostitos would be a good replacement? i just boosted my mileage, and want to get really serious about track, because i think i am going to be on varsity, so that will be good. i will also probably replace the dr. pepper with propel, (i already drink 4-5 a day so it will probably get up to 6-7 so would that many be bad and should i switch some to water?)
i am also allergic to dairy(milk chocolate cheese eggs yogurt etc) and soy(tofu etc), so i dont get a ton of calcium but i take calcium pills every once in a while, what else can i take to get more calcium
and do to my dairy and soy allergies, i usually eat toaster stroodles for breakfast i have heard they arent that good is it true? and what should i eat if i cant have cereal (because of milk being in it)?
sorry i am pretty stupid when it comes to food.
