Interesting news I found from East St. Louis...There were no times posted in the article:
BELLEVILLE - After getting a scare, the East St. Louis Flyers survived one Tuesday at the St. Clair County boys track meet.
Carlton Ward set a new meet and school record to win the pole vault and Devin Williams won the 3,200 meters as East St. Louis held off Cahokia to win the team title at Belleville West High School.
Ward, ignoring windy and cold conditions, cleared 14 feet, 4 inches to easily win the pole vault, while the somewhat inconsistent Williams, not only won the 3,200 meters, but also finished second behind Scott Cooper of O'Fallon in the 1,600 meters.
"If there was a hero of the night for us it was Devin. He just had a great meet for us," Flyers coach Roscoe Whitfield said. "He's got a lot of ability and tonight he showed what kind of runner he can be."
With Ward and Williams leading the way, East St. Louis finished with 160 1/2 points to nip Cahokia (153) and O'Fallon (134) for the title. Belleville East (103 1/2) and Belleville West (43) rounded out the top five schools.
But the win may have been a costly one for East St. Louis. Senior Tim Allen, one of the top sprinters in the state and the favorite to win the 100-, 200- and 400-meter championships, suffered an injury to his left hamstring while winning the 100-meter dash. Allen did not compete in the 200 and 400 meters.
