Just wondered if anything other than the usual ice/heat/rest works?
I have a Drs. appt. tomorrow anyway, so I guess I'll have him take a look.

Over many many years, since high school (a long time ago), I've done all that stuff, for recurring achilles soreness. The thing that finally cured me was orthotics and/or inserts, and lots of stretching. It took all that time to figure out that my feet were pronated. Sometimes I've gone to a massage therapist who would jiggle my tendon between his thumb and forefinger -- which hurt like hell, but it worked.
So, I don't know if you've had this a while, or this is a first-time injury. Definitely, see if your feet land flat, and try inserts anyway.

I'd tweaked it some years ago. Retiring from racquetball seemed to help "cure" it, as did dumping all the high-tops and mids and sticking to lows on all the footwear.
I had some help picking out the running shoes I have now, so I'm confident in that.
I just missed a step badly yesterday and came down half-in and half-out of a pothole that I wasn't paying attention to.
You think inserts might be worthwhile as well?

That's the injury that basically ended my running. I still have a future but I'm in horrible shape and having major troubles getting back into it.
What happened was at some point over the summer my running form changed ever so slightly (possibly because I was doing longer runs than I had, and I was trying to get used to it, I'm not sure) and it was stretching my achilles a bit much. So all I did was run on a treadmill with a bit different of form, training my body to avoid the motion I had been using, and stretching a lot (just usual calf stretches with minor modifications) and things were better.
Unfortunately I had taken too long to actually seek professional help and when I got back to running (4 months after injury) I was in 2:46 800 shape (slowest 800 I've ever run timed except maybe 4th grade) and indoor never got me faster than 2:22, and 2:21 was my slowest 800 before that season.

I do think inserts are a good thing, yes. Also it sounds like you could use a good dose of anti-inflammatories.

Anyone else ever have a bad heel bruise?

I recently had reoccuring achilles soreness and saw a podiatrist. I found out that my right arch was falling (ah, age) and that it was putting stress on my achilles....I have orthotics now, and for the past week and a half, have had NO achilles soreness whatsoever.
