It was an unusual day at Red Rock State Park.
Bit of an upset in the Girls AAAAA race - Gallup handily beat nationally ranked
Eldorado. I heard Tebo say during the race that one of the Eldorado girls (Rachel Velarde) had dropped out. The race was won by Cibola's Vanessa Ortiz in 18:29, the fastest girls time of the day.
The Gallup boys also won the AAAAA team championship. Matt Tebo won in 15:40, looking like he was hardly working. It was the fastest time of the day. He was followed by teammate Kevin McNally in second place.
In AAAA, it was once again Albuquerque Academy and Los Alamos and everyone else. It was expected that the Los Alamos girls would run neck-and-neck with Albuquerque Academy and that their boys would finish well behind Academy. In fact, it turned out the opposite - the AA girls ran a fantastic race and finished far in the lead, while the Los Alamos boys nearly upset AA, who won by only 2 points 44-42. The Los Alamos boy's average time of 16:48 was 6 seconds faster than Academy's average, and the fastest of the day across all divisions. Ryan McNiff was Los Alamos' first individual boys state XC champion since Anthony Sandoval in 1971. Ali Blum was Los Alamos' fourth individual girls state XC champion in a row, following Kristen Hemphill's wins in the previous three years. This was only the second XC race Ali has every won, the first being the district meet last week.
AAA winners were St. Michaels for the girls with 25 points over 2nd place Pojoaque with 50. St. Mikes was lead by State Individual Champion Irena Ossola 18:42, who finished a split second ahead of teammate Tess Amer, who is only an 8th grader. Cobre was the winner for the boys with 61 points over Wingate with 65. Cobre was lead by State Individual Champion Obed Hernandez in 16:36.
