Just building my base up to about 70 then doing some speed work closer to the season.

I wanted to do an 8 miler today, but my toes got completely numb and I had to stop at 4...anyone else have this problem? it sucks

My boogers freeze in my nose and it feels really icky. I just did 5 inside to avoid that problem. I'm building up to about 80 (just past winter break) and then staying there for a little while.

Same here... except I finished at 5. It was mighty damn cold outside when I woke up and ran this morning. Gotta remember to start using double-socks once again.

Its just going to get some time to get used to. Last year there were times where it was just as cold and colder. Probably wouldnt reccomend double socks to be honest though, it could mess up the feet.

Of course your feet will be cold but I dont feel its neccessary. Ive ran every winter day with only 1 pair of socks. Thats the least of my worries, my hands and ears are usually the coldest. Im a minimalist so my beliefs are the more stuff you put on your feet, the better chance your foot will get messed up. Whatever tho do what u want

didn't escareno try that minimilast stuff over the summer and it ended up pwning him during this season...if i recall he had to wear trainers at the libertyville invite...

haha, it really sucks sometimes because it gets dark out by like 500. plus its the lonliest and most depressing part of the year. but running over winter break is great because everyones home from college and you can do doubles

The ice is the worst part, especially when combined with the dark. I've slipped a couple times in this past week (but mainly because the Walgreens is still trying to water the grass  )

I plan on running 700ish, and have ran 112 already

I'm still taking off because of bad hamstring problems throughout the xc season, just trying to give them a rest, but im going to start up soon. Those of you doing 700+ miles this winter did you guys take any rest after the season if so how long? and is your 700 miles included in like some of the indoor track races and all that. Just wondering what other people do during the winter thanks.

LetsGo10
11-19-2005, 08:31 PM
i'll answer.. but I'm a girl so..
After my season I was going to take like 2 weeks off but started running halfway though my 2nd week.. im not counting those miles.
So far i've been running for 2 weeks now.. and no my mileage isn't going into indoor track season. There's many weeks left depending on how early your track season starts but yeah you can do the math and figure out how many miles you need to do per week to get up to that 700. Obviously take into account that you will start off with less miles and build up. I think its quite doable even if you haven't started yet especially since boys tend to do higher mileage in comparison to girls anyways.
Yep. Idk if I'm any help.

I started the day after the state meet (Nov. 6), but my season ended mid-october becasue of an injury. I'm counting untill the first day of official practice, maybe the 16th, or the 17th, I'm not sure, it's like 10 weeks or so.

I chose to wear trainers; I didn't have to. There was no point in using spikes that early in the season.

Also, I've worn double socks during winter throughout my whole HS stay, and sometimes even three pairs of socks. The bottom of my feet has always been fine. Not till yesterday, when Charlie Hatch told me, did I find out that wearing two pairs of socks can cause blisters and what not. I guess I've been lucky to stay blister-free. Having frozen feet while running is something I do not enjoy.

Two pairs of socks could just cause your shoes to fit a little differently which isn't good.

Christian - Did you say you run in the morning? That's gotta suck. I want to double, but I figure by mid-December through January, it's gonna be below 10 degrees most mornings.

The guys on our team usually run outside unless the mercury drops below 10 degrees, or it's not quite that low but with a huge windchill... like below 0 maybe.

My winter's gonna be something like 100 mpw w/ fartleks, tempos, or longer intervals 3 days/week with a steady long run on Sunday. And we don't start practice till mid-February so I'll be well over 1000 miles by then.

Why do girls tend to do lower mileage than boys? I was j/w. Also, 700 miles this winter is a lot for anyone, not just girls, if you ask me.

About the running in the morning thing. Two pairs of socks keep my feet alive, compared to wearing only one pair and letting feet freeze. You have to remember, I use the Asics DS Trainers which don't really have any insulation.

Running in the mornings is harsh but with the right accessories it can be easy. An mp3 usually lets you forget about the biting, cold pain that numbs your face and other body parts.

There's not much to worry about. Sooner than later we'll all get used to the cold anyway...

Just so you don't get killed or something...

I'd suggest not using an MP3 player on those runs. You have to be so aware of what's happening around you, especially when you get snow/ice on the ground, covering sidewalks, which forces you into the streets occasionally.

Been running for four years with mp3 players... not hit yet. When you're running all your senses are pretty tuned and if you were a runner in a city then you probably are already used to having to look in all directions at all times to not get hit by any cars. It depends on the type of person you are I guess. I just can't really imagine running all the time without some sort of music playing in my ears. Right now I am mp3-less and I'm all right, but I'm not really training hard anymore. When the long and lonely winter days arrive I'd like something to listen to during those cold and bleak nights. I'll prolly get hit this winter but w/e. :D

ipods/mp3 players are things that you wont have during a race, so why use them to train? according to Lydiard, the optimal training gear is the least amount of the lightest, most flexible material possible -- mp3 players not included. Also, he had his European teams stay there during the winter rather than travel to the Carib so the cold argument doesn't really cut it either. I'm pretty sure that he'd just tell you guys to bust out some industrial sized vagisil and slather it on.
