Bastert got 75, was in the top 3 at the mile and said she got really dizzy right after it and didnt remember much, then she said someone pulled her out of the snow(she obviously fell b/c of it) and she started running again, then fell again at 2 3/4 from dizzyness again and got up and finished the race. In my opnion 75th isnt that bad from running sick and basically blacking out for 1/2 the race. To bad she had to be sick I really thought she had a shot at winning this thing. Great job by the IL boys to step up big when it mattered.

You should get your damn facts straight before you start stupid rumors. I'm on the phone with evan right now, and he has no idea what you are talking about. He wasnt even playing football after the race, and he isn't injured at all. He's 100% running at nationals as of right now, so i just wanted to clear that up.

yeah....i got 98th in 16:16......I passed Christian just before the 2 mile mark and since I figured I wasn't going to do anything special in the race I tried to get him going to at least finish with me....he tried for about 1/8-1/4 of a mile then fell back off again, finished around 17ish for time. The course was fairly fast compared to last year. Just some snow in the ground. I got a cramp at the top of the hill and was just passed by a couple of hundred people for the rest of the race. =/

No offense but this like MJ (Michael Johnson) pulling up lame after stiff competition won't go away. It has already been established that KB doesn't need to seriously train to run well. However, it's a different story when someone of equal talent is on the case... totally different different than running against Class A talent (in a regional or national level race). Hard training will always conquer talent when it counts (provided there is talented too).

This is what I'm saying. I know that Katelyn is better than 75th in any race in the country including NCAA's. She may have been sick too. However, she was in the mix. The top girls were with her and since she didn't shake them them she folded somewhat. Perhaps, her illness kicked in but she has run well under these conditions (i.e. 2005 state).

Kate's racing strategy today was not to shake anybody, but to qualify for nationals.
I figured that... the truth is she has never ran with comp before even against Comfort. She goes out so hard and it's over. She's goes out in 5:10 but so can Wetch, Snow and the elite girls. That's a big difference mentally when you haven't experienced it before. KB will be back though.

I give her props for even running the race. Most people wouldnt be running if they were as sick as her. From what I was told she was so sick that she was coughing blood earlier this week, and she goes out and puts it on the line to qualify, and then her body shuts down. I think your a little off line, know your facts before you start talking.

illinoisprepster's claim that she could have taken top 75 in NCAA is absolutely ridiculous. 75th at NCAA's paced a 5:37/mile pace for a 6k, which is 3.72 miles compared to Bastert's 5:38/mile pace at state for 3.0 miles on a fast course...doesn't make sense. I know she ran faster at Peoria Heights meet, but to suggest she could cover close to another mile at that pace is stupid, especially b/c the Nats course was much more difficult than Detweiller. Footlocker today only demonstrated that the girls in Illinois are not on par with the guys, so to think an IL H.S. girl could come in the top 75 in a DI NCAA Nationals meet is just plain dumb.

Katelyn B is one of the best prep runners in the US. Look at her stats. Her PB's prior to this year on the track is 10:31 and 4:55. She did run 16:31 to win by almost 2mins in that race. We all know that she can 5:37 pace on an average day. She just isn't the smartest runner right now because she never had to. Why? The kid goes goes out in 5:10 to 5:20 pace with ease and just cruises. Top 75= Katelyn Bastert.
I actually believe KB is top 10 material for FLMW on another day but not today.

Look at the track and 5k pb's of the girls listed 50-75th at NCAA's. KB can handle them. Remember, these girls have the benefit of running in a pack as well= competition.

Shannon Phelan (NN ace) is compiling a team diary for IPTT through NTN. We should have the first installment on their training and daily thoughts next week. We should know if this is true then. Remember that York has been through national press, stress, and success for some time now. This is our girls representative's first go around.

Its true, from what ive seen at our school, out of like 120 girls on the team, only a handfull seem to even know what NTN is. A varsity girl I talked to didnt even seem like she wanted to go. No i dont see popejoy walking away again from running, he is in it for the long haul. He didnt run his 8th grade year b/c he needed a mental break, and i think that was all he needed, dont see him doing that again. He is a great kid and still has a great chance to be the state champ in track. Keep in mind, he was a step behind mac and dettman at state track last year with 800 to go before his injury flared up on him.
he needed a mental break in 8th grade?!? what kinda sick pressure is this kid being put through?

It's not the post-season training, its the pre-high school training according to a conversation I had yesterday. The theory thrown out was that Chicago area has a high concentration of good runners, but it also has a high concentration of elite kids in running clubs that do not have the long term best interest of the runner in mind. Girls right now are seeing the negative effects of this.

I'm guessing that Kyle might know a little bit about how York is training and how healthy the top guys are.

I think that girls in Illinois still focus almost entirely on state, and qualifying for the state meet (even for the elite girls, the depth of Illinois girls especially in class AA makes our sectional meet very difficult and most teams are peaking for sectionals and state). Some of the top girls from states like South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota have more than two classes and may not need to worry about sectional qualifying as much as our girls. Having said that many people in Illinois think that our girls are overraced and may hinder their development. Remember in the case of Lauren Haberkorn she is still very young and this was her first taste of racing with such a strong field, I'm confident IL girls are making progress on this front. (Remember our girls came within one point of winning the mideast meet for the first time ever, losing by only a point to the home team Ohio).

girls dont care about running as much as guys, its a social club for them, whether they are good or bad.

that statement was true for my hs as well. I had some friends that were stars on other sports in different seasons, that ran xc to be with friends with the additional benefit of getting in shape for their real sport. On the flip side though, there are some girls that do take running seriously and are there to work hard and compete.

That's how it was at Fenton. The only girl who was moderately serious was Rachel Hernandez but she loved to tell us how we were not athletes because we did not do 3 sports like she did. She's getting the last laugh now, though.

This is such a bs statement and not thought out very well. Nationally, the girls hold their own just like the boys. Look at the times and performances. We had girls go after the national 1 and 2m records. Girls running low 2:00's in the 800. Up until three years ago we had girls from our state qualifying every year for footlocker. Something has changed since then. Maybe it's the direction of our top girls coaching approach after state is over.

Obvioulsy not ALL girls fit Prelikedbeer's description, but I would agree that there are many more girls who do that than guys.
PLB isn't saying there are no dedicated girls, he's just refering to the fact that most girls don't even come close to caring about XC as much as guys do. Sure there are some nationally-recognized girls out there who put it on the line, but there are also all-state girls who don't care about running, they're just really good at it.
If you look at a guys XC team roster, from 1-50, most of them are probably just as dedicated as most girls teams varsity roster.

I thinks girls care just as much about the instate competitions, however, after the state meet for xc, all the focus is on track. Most of the girls on my team aren't interested in running extra meets, they're getting ready for track, and vice-versa in after state for track.

I haven't seen girls crying either.
And this may not be crying, but reports said that Craven threw up when he heard he got 2nd in state.

I dont think you can generalize. My team went to a running camp in Montana with some elite runners there (ballermine prep was 4th a NTN last year and Zoey Nelson's Flathead high school). And some of the girls were very into cross country, like more than we were. Then there was some girl who won state in track for her state and was like "uhhh I dont really like training...I run a few times a week in season..."
