What are any special techniques you guys have to get through a 300hurdle race? What parts do you find the hardect? I have been having trouble keeping my speed when I land off the hurdle and I want to keep my number 1 spot at my school! But i love hurdling its one of my favorite events!!!

that site is pretty helpful, just remember to attack the hurdle and not jump over it

the most difficult part id say is the turn...if you can keep speed through the turn its good for a fast race

yeah what he said. don't try to jump over the hurdle, think of it as running over it.

i find that the last 2 hurdles, especially the last one, are the hardest. your legs just seem to want to shut down after the previous 6 hurdles. but the biggest thing is to make sure you keep your form, even when you start to get tired. this is when form drills are put to good use. also, (i don't do this) but i heard counting your steps in between each hurdle (during practice to get used to it) is extremely helpful. i've heard of people cutting seconds off their time because they developed a rhythm or pattern to each hurdle. i'm going to start counting steps at practice Wed.

To help maintain speed...when you come over the hurdle bring your trail leg as high into your arm pit as possible and take a big step, so you can resume good sprinting form. Normally most kids will drop the trail leg on the way down, causing a braking effect.

Remember drive off the hurdle!!!

to bring your trail leg as high into your arm pit as possible seems like a fair amount of wasted energy to me. why bring your trail leg so high up when the hurdle is only 36". And bringing your leg that high could make your next step too long and feel awkward. but other than that, good point on the dropping of the trail leg.

The open 400m is absolutely harder than the 300m hurdles. The well-trained body doesn't really start burning lactic acid until around 40 seconds of hard running. If you are a good 300m hurdler, you run around 40 seconds or faster. That means your body never really starts hurting from all the lactic acid build-up. Now, that same 40-second 300m hurdler will probably run around 51.5 in the open 400m race. That's 11.5 seconds of running with lactic acid build-up (almost 1/4 the race) as compared to ZERO major lactic acid build-up for the 300m hurdlers. The open 400m is definitely harder.

DUDE! are you really that dumb? the open 400 is not as hard a the 300h. i run the 300h and the mile relay. when you have 8 hurdles in the way, your body will start to build lactic acid faster then 40 sec! the 8 hurdles makes things so much harder!

on the turn, if you lead with your left foot. that will take a little time off. dont throw your arms, keep them in, when your arms fly, you fly, and you dont get down as fast. also hurldering isnt jumping, you need to drive to the hurdle, attack the hurdle, and DRIVE AWAY! and in the last 100, think AMRS, ARMS, ARMS. if you have good arms you will do much better than someone with crapy arms. its kinda like how much are you will to take for 40sec?

some form stuff you can do is, set up like 4 hurdles on the 110 lines and take 7 steps between each hurdle. this is going to make you hurdle the hurdle, and not jump it. it also works with 5 steps between the hurdles.

(background info: im from NY and we run the 400h here, but in the beginning of every season we scrimmage a NJ team and run the 300h... )

the 400h is the hardest event on the track saves steeplechase which i've never run (i've run everything else including 2 mile, mile, 5k, etc.) if anyone wants to compare any event to the 400h, then let it be the steeplechase because that is basically "cross country on the track" and i'd say that xc and 400h tie for difficulty, anything other comparison is a mockery of the efforts a 400h runner putsforth...

but on the other hand... the 400 is DEFINATELY a harder event than the 300h... that is not nearly as challenging as going all out for 400m... my personal experiance in the 300h is that even going top end speed the whole time i dont die... i feel fine the whole race... my body starts to shut down at about 325m or so and in the 400h and 400m the last 100 is hellish

I'm just wondering if shorties have a disadvantage in doing hurdles. I must be one of the shortest guys on my team (5'5) and I still do hurdles.

def not, our 110 hurdle champ for our league was 5'7" and he ran 14.3

ok, this guy is just a moron! hell yes, if you are short, it makes things harder. i mean you can do it, but its harder. the 300, and 400 hurdles are going to be easyer for a short person then the 110's. i would say try out the 300h.

that wasnt necessary
well most hurdlers are tall, but their can still be good short hurdlers; maybe not 5'5" but who knows...

I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about, buddy. I have run plenty of 300m Hurdle, 400m Hurdles, open 400m Dash and 4x400m Relay races in my life. I never said anybody was dumb for believing differently, but it is my opinion that the 400m dash is a harder event than the 300m Hurdles. If you run smoothly over the hurdles while hitting the correct steps, it is not as hard of an event. You can run all-out for the entire 300m Hurdle race. You sure as heck can't do that in a 400m race.

What times do you run?

300-40.04
400-50.12 (split)
and ive never ran the 400h, but i damn well know that would be very hard.

Yes, the 400m Hurdles is much more difficult than the 300m Hurdles. Why? BECAUSE YOU ARE PUSHING YOURSELF PAST THAT 40-SECOND THRESHOLD! With your times, you are running 10 seconds longer at almost the same intensity. If a 40.04 300m Hurdle race is really hard for you, I don't know how you can split 50.12.
