A proposal has been made to develop a Pro league, to furhter develop the depth of long distance runners in the US. Heres how it will work.

there will be between 12-16 teams, that are divided into two divisions (East and West). These teams will be stratgically located in the cities where training and fan base is sufficent. Such as...

West:
Eugene/Portland, Or
San Fran, Cal
Las Angeles, Cal
Albuquerque, NM
Bouldar/Denver, CO
Dallas, TX

East:
Minneapolis, MN
Chicago, IL
Knoxville, TN
Indianapolis, IN
Boston, MA
New york, NY
other such running oriented cities.

Teams will be composed of One coach and approximately 20 men practicing together daily. Five will be on contract with a paid sallary ranging from $10,000 - $50,000. THe other 15 will pay a membership for the training and coaching they recieve. This way it is partially self sufficent. All other independent sponsorships one can recieve are welcomed.

The season will be composed of 8 regular season races, along with a National Championship. Each team will race 5 total races (4 season plus Champiosnhip). First week of the season the West teams will all race eachother at some desiganted course. The next week the East teams will race eachother at some designated course, and so on and so forth, for 8 weeks.

The incentives for the non-contract runners, is that in each race 7 run and five score, and any non-contract runner that races gets an exponential cash bonus from the team for his performance. A free place to live and some health insurance will be available to a select few that need such aid.

So, as you have probably guessed this is BS, But I see few reasons why such a League could not be developed. Sure most would have to have other jobs, But so did NBA and NFL players back when it got started. This would be giving over 60 runners an average of $30,000 for 6 months of work. The biggest opponent to this would be USATF, because they would lose tons of money. Most of the members of USATF are distance runners, and I would bet that many would rather support their local pro team than the USATF.

The problem that you'd face with that organization is that it would revolve around teams, which would mean athletes would have to be responsible to show up and run during every meet. The best LD runners run on their own schedule and these commitments would surely be broken many many times due to things like injuries and season planning.

of course I'd love to see it happen. it'd be alot better than watching baseball

yes, but high schhool runners also have commitments to their own teams but the great ones all seemed to do their own running along with fulfilling those commitments

Anyway, i'd love to see something like this come about. i think it would be great for the sport

You can't run on your own and run in a state championship, which is what kids are aiming for in HS. I've never seen someone run "Unattatched" at state

I know what you mean, but this would likley be for only 5 months out of the year, 6 months tops. 2-3months for preseason practice, and 2-3 for season.

Just say you have Ritz on your team, well you dont have to race him in all 4 regular season races. Pick two that fit him best and then run him in the National Championship. Qualifying for the national championship would likley be every team besides the worst two in each division.

a point system would be created to rank the teams throughout the season. Say, if there is 6 teams per division, first gets 10 points, second 8, third 6, fourth 4, fifth 2, and last 1. So an example end of season ranking would look something like this:

West:
San Fran. 6-10-10-4: 30
Las Ang. 4-8-8-8: 28
Colorado. 10-6-4-6: 26
Oregon. 8-2-6-10: 26
New Mex. 1-4-2-1: 8
Dallas. 2-1-1-2: 6

East:
New York. 6-10-10-4: 30
Chicago. 4-8-8-8: 28
Minne. 10-6-4-6: 26
Knoxville. 8-2-6-10: 26
Boston. 1-4-2-1: 8
Indiana. 2-1-1-2: 6

Im almost imagining that this is actually gonna happen! Its sad, oh well.
