View Full Version : The Meet Of The Year... Monona Grove
The Shocker IIiI

Okay, so I think everyone here knows that Monona Grove is one of the most competitive Wisconsin track meets of the year, besides state. Let's hear predictions for the 800, 1600, 3200 and 3200 relay winning times. Also let's start a list of which distance runners will be running there. Just copy and paste additions like on the college choices thread. As I recall Mad West won the 3200 relay in 8:10, Lacy at 4:23, Matt Kovnesky in 1:58, Josh Pinter in 9:37. Others there were Limbach, Gasper (woulda ran if he was healthy), Pire, Voss, Kehoe, Ludwig, Clauss, Kusters, McKenney, Barrett (didn't run though) and all the Mad West guys. Should be another strong field this year.

I'm assuming Gasper and Barrett will both be running. It would be noice to see a head to head match up in the deuce
Gasper-3200m, Barrett-1000m, Vos-1600m, Kehoe-3200m, Flyte-800m, Smith 800m.
Word has it that Gasper is going for a big 3200m.

I don't think many teams are sure as of now, however the winning 3200 meter relay is generally pretty fast at this meet.

Takin it easy

Verona edged Madison West to win in the 4x800. Whitnall had a nice lead til about 150 left in the third leg and their guy hit a wall and literally fell down with about 20 meters left, staggering up again to hand it off and then falling again. they came out of that hand-off in I think third after leading by about 50 or 60 meters. Too bad.

9:26 for Gasper?

And ONLY 2 guys sub 2:00 in the 800?!?
I expected much more from this meet. Heck, there were 5 guys sub 2:00 at the River Falls Tune-up meet last Tuesday. Maybe that is a better meet than Monona Grove now? eh EH?!

Well, we were on pace for like 8:00-8:02 until i fainted coming down the stretch. Dehydration or something like that, idk, but it sucked incredibly.

Not to mention I sucked @ss as an anchor. I think your fall fazed me a little, Limoni. We actually handed off after 2 guys at 3:58, and you were on 154 pace. Even if you woulda ran 158 and I shoulda ran 158, that would be 7:54/7:55. Good sign for state this year, no worries.

You're right, our meet isn't quite the team power meet it used to be. You do have to note, though, that many of the teams (Germantown, and esp. Monroe) did not stack this meet, and decided to save their athletes for conference instead. I was really disappointed not to see Barrett and Gasper face off in the two mile, but I guess we'll just have to wait for state.
As far as the 800 goes, you can blame 1. Monroe and 2. the 600. Neither Smith nor Kehoe ran the 800, and both would probably have gone sub-two, and it's possible that the top 6 guys in the 600 all would have run sub-two 800s if they had run it.

about the actual race:
too bad graftons d2 or a grafton/whitnall/madwest/menominee/(mukwanago?) 4x8 would be amazing at state. still should be a good d1 race
Brumund-Smith
05-16-2005, 07:48 PM
I wasn't there and I didn't see the race, but if the guy said he was on 1:54 pace, I believe him. Does that mean he would have run 1:54 had he not fallen over? Absolutely not. That's why we run the races. He will have another shot to prove himself. I remember being all upset my freshmen year in college when I was running very well in the conference 400m finals, but then I hit the ninth hurdle and fell back to eighth. I was really upset afterwards and said to my coach, "Dang, I could have gotten fifth if I hadn't hit that hurdle." He said to me, "John, that's why them put 'em there." Falling obviously explains why his time was slow, but somebody that accomplished doesn't need to play the "coulda, woulda, shoulda" game. His time will come. We'll see how he does.
was he at 1:54 pace based on his 400 split (:57?), or was he actually at 1:54 pace with 100 meters left?
He actually just went out too hard(55 first lap) and the dehydration kicked in later in the race. I believe at the 600 mark he split a time that would have placed in the actual 600. So with better pacing to start out with there probably won't be anymore crazy splits like 55, 71 hence the no worries for state.
I agree though, the 4x8 at state is gonna be nuts. Should be a great race.
Hall_@ss1088
05-16-2005, 08:32 PM
I'm just curious why it seems so outrageous for Nick Limoni, who has been running great times since freshman year, to run that fast. Sure it's better than Perkins and Rombough have run SO FAR, but it's a flippin' split and you can't use their times as a basis for his credibility. He's a great and apparently smart runner...give at least a little credit where it's due...

i believe with 200 left idk told me he went out in 55 i have faith in my boy to come back in sub 60
What I'm pretty sure happened is that he went out in 55(too quick) and with 200 or so to go dehydration and and a virus hes been fighting for a few weeks got to him and he just couldn't handle it. We should just end the discussion until Nick posts exactly what happened.

The Shocker IIiI
05-16-2005, 09:37 PM
Yeah, goin off what you siad Hall. Everyone seems to be getting sick. In fact, two weeks ago every single distance guy and 3/4 of the sprinters on my team were sick. Out of the 12 guys that started intervals, Me and Limoni were the only ones to finish it. It pretty crazy. On the Limoni note, I am not sure if he is, in fact capable of 154, though I think something close is not out of his league. He is a great runner with endless potential.
To md159: I wasn't making excuses, only writing my thoughts about the future of our team. I know you like posting on Dyestat, but there is no reason to try to start confrontations (that's what it seems like to me)
Limoni came through the 400 at 55, and the next 200 was in 28, then he hit the wall, which was aided by his viral infection and he collapsed. He couldn't help it and will run MUCH faster in the future. I'm looking forward to some GREAT racing from all the teams up at state (as long as I don't run another 2:05/6!) Thanks for listening to my two cents on the subject.

05-16-2005, 10:11 PM
Thanks Bobby, Hall, Denny, Matt and everyone else that thinks that I could've run a 1:54, but truthfully that would've never happened. Feeling like crap, I went out hard to try and see how fast I could maintain it for a fast split. With my legs feeling like crap, coupled with the sickness fatigue, and a rather unwise 55, I collapsed 10-15 meters from the exchange zone before getting up again and staggering to make the exchange.
A 1:56 was what Timmy said I was on pace for after a 1:24 something 600, but by then the wheels were coming off and I kind of knew that would've been impossible. Maybe in the future, yes, but Monona Grove turned out to be a ****ty meet for me. Damn Friday the 13th.

I don't want this to come off as too confrontational, because I was just harping on that, but nobody said he would have run a 1:50 (the fastest 800 in the state). I think you must have misread a post or something. People were just talking about his pacing with like 150 meters to go. Most people know that when you go out and die, the pace you were at is definitely not the time you are gonna run. I could go out in a 52 and it doesn't mean that i can run a 1:44. way to make the exact same point as md159 while trying to rebute what he said. he never said that anyone was on pace for a 1:50, he said he could go out in 55 and that doesn't mean he can run a 1:50, then you brilliantly told him that you could go out in 52 and not run a 1:44. and for the record, md159 hasn't run a 3200 relay this year but when he does it will be for the best relay in the state

someone clearly did say that he would run that time, read the thread Shocker and then try telling people they're wrong

Even if your PR is a 1:45, there's no way you could run a 1:57 with Denny's mom on your back. Nobody in this world could break 4:00 for an 800 with Denny's mom on their back, this I assure you! :D

I sincerely apologize for my comment, I must have read over that post. I didn't think anyone posted that he'd actually run that time. I will read the thread more closely next time.

im confused.....you only have one guy on the honor roll for the open 8 and your team isnt on the 4x8 honor roll. have you just never stacked your 4x8 this season? are your other 3 guys all at exactly 159 or what?

This year in open races we have 5 guys under 2:02 and 3 under 2. We have yet to put our best team together and most likely wont do so until state but our top 4 have career bests of 1:55.8, 1:59.1, 1:59.5 and 1:59.5. At sectionals we may run our top alternate who is at 2:01 right now, to rest one of our runners for the 1600, but he will run at state if we make it. This should end up being a good race, so good luck to Whitnall and all other teams participating in the race.

Hey, thanks steve. I wasn't sure if you guys were going to run a 3200 relay at state. You guys should have an awesome team. You and Horton should contibute nicely to a low time and podium spot. What else are you running at sectionals? I'm looking forward to some crazy times in the relay finals on friday, I think the winner will be in the low 750s, possilbly even under 750.

Im only running the 4x800 and 800. I tried the triple last year and it will be way to hard to come back and qualify in the 800 with the field this year. Also just wanted to say something about our freshmen Kyle McFadden who ran a 1:59.5 on Tuesday to take second place in conference. Very impressive for such a young guy. Whos running what for you guys this year?

That's is f'ing flying for a frosh. I think I got down to 2:09 my freshman year!
As for regionals, I think I'm running the mile and the 4*400 relay.

750 is somewhat of a stretch, so far from what ive seen from results and what has been said here about bays 4x8, they are the only team other than grafton who could come close to that. Whitnall or menominee would be the next best bet, but whitnall seems to lack a forth and menominee hasnt done much recently that i know of.

He split a 54 in the 400 and hes run a 4:40 mile so id say hes more of a 400/800 guy although i think hes going to get down in the mile. Hes run very comparable times to me as a freshman so i wouldnt be surprised to see him go under 4:30 at sectionals.

Kyle is a beast without a doubt, 1:59 and a 440 as a freshman. He's definently one of the best freshman in the state based on those times. I'd go as far as saying number 2, but besides that he ran a very smart 800 when he ran the 159 and has a strong kick, he picked off I think 4 ppl in the last 400.
