How effective is the lydiard training program of 100 miles a week?

There's no question that it's one of the most of the most, if not the most training method every devised. The proof are in the results. I've got another question though, is it feasable for a high schooler to use?

Lydiard program doesn't necessarily mean 100 miles per week. It just recommends high mileage and emphasizes a long base phase of marathon training. It has to be altered for high school and college athletes because it focuses on only one racing season per year.

Well actually it does necessarily mean 100 miles per week. Lydiard said that 100 mpw is what he would suggest as the min. amount for any runner. Now I'm sure he didn't mean a 6 year old kid BUT the night before he passed he gave a speech in Houston, and he must of said 4 times "We can beat those damn Kenyan's, but they have been on my program since they were 6 yrs old." So maybe he does think younger people could handle the mileage. Maybe that is why he ran 100 mpw until he was 62 yrs old!?!?! I do not think 100 mpw in HS is too much, as long as it is a gradual build to it.

He also reccomended having a beer after a run. He said it was supposedly the best way to quench your thirst. :D

Haile Geb. ran 12 miles a day, 5 days out the week (6M to school and back) when he was around 7/8 years old. thats roughly 60mpw not including the labor he had to do working in the village, herding animals, getting water and such.
Also i was reading this article on Bekele in Track and Field News Magazine and he runs 90mpw.

90 mpw, BUT many of the Kenyan's, Ethopioan's, etc. only include their hard running in weekly mileage. They cut out all miles accumliated in warm-ups, cool downs, intervals, short hill sprints, etc. With all that included a week I would say Bekele more than likely holds 1005 mpw nearly year round.

That is a TON of warm-up and cool-down.

Not really! 3 mile warm up and cool down 3 times a week (when not racing) is 18 mpw uncounted for!
