Read this interview of Renato Canova(coach of Saif Shaheen, WR holder in 3k SC, and other elite racers)

It has a lot of great information. He expects El G, Bekele, and Shaheen to be the top guys this year. Great read!

Now that's what I call going out on a limb!

Wow...I read that whole thing, it was great. Interesting he thinks 20-40 min runs really hard is critical and that it takes 10 YEARS of aerobic base training before "you can put the cherry on top of the cake" (cherry being intervals etc., and the cake being the base).

the guy seems brilliant and you want to have him as your coach, but i can't really make heads or tails of what he thinks you should do. as best as i can tell, he thinks:
1) it depends on the distance
2) very, very, very fast 20-40 minute runs can be the basis for great performances at 5k or 10k (?--rather than lots of interval work)
3) very short, steep, fast hill work twice a week is very good training
4) you need many years of endurance work before doing the intervals

I think his most important point is that there is no schedule that fits every person. Sure, there are general guidelines, but the training must be made to fit the athlete, not the other way.

search his name on the letsrun.com board, he actually posts there quite a bit about training

Go to the letsrun forum, and click on the "good threads" thread stickied ont he top, I posted links to all his threads in one thread, but I haven't updated it for months, but there haven't been tons of new critical threads though.
He's my favorite coach, what he says seems pretty great! I like following El G's training though personally.
The workout he does where you have this run which isn't super long, but it's super fast...I DO THAT!!! It works great! It's definetely my most powerful workout, when I'm in shape it's because of those workouts, but I'm not usually training recently hehehe :p

That is a great article. Listening to who he thinks could be the best is interesting. It seems interesting to think that cornelius is a lazy mo-fo.
