Seriously, distance running has to be the worst sport ever. If I could be competetive in another sport I would quit. Think about it: for workouts you run yourself ragged, intervals are pure pain, and come race day it's all about who can push themselves the hardest, through the intense burning in your legs. How is this fun. Throwers/jumpers/sprinters have it made, I envy them so much on race day. Chuck a javelin a few times and your done. No anticipation of the brutal raping you are preparing to give yourself in your event.

That is what I LOVE about distance running.

Maybe we're just all masochists?
Read "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk. That puts a lot of what we do into perspective.

distance running is by far the best track speciality. field athletes never go "head-to-head" and there training seems boring to me. sprinters dont have a lot of tactics, they just run fast. and then add in the fact that with sprints or fields, youre either good, or youre not. with distance running, anyone can be good if they are willing to pay the price. i used to want to be a sprinter in high school but over the years, ive come to realize just how great being a distance runner is.

Yeah those are good points, there's definately some things about distance running that are better than sprinting/throwing. The main thing is that if you want to be good at running, it's really easy. With some athletic talent, you just run as much as possible in the offseason and can become a beast at track/xc. And winning definately is the best part of it, theres nothing like outkicking someone and crossing the line first.
Oh yeah!

I'll tell you what...it takes balls to be a distance runner. It's like distance runners are part of a brotherhood. We all know what the pain is like and that it's horrible but for some reason, after a grueling race and you hear the time, it's all worth it(if you ran a good race of course). As far as workouts, I'm so glad I'm not a sprinter or thrower. I love the feeling when I'm doing repeat 400s or 800s with my distance crew and everyone looks at us like were nuts while their doing their little drills or throwing a ball for 2 hours. Why do you guys think that on any given team only a very small group of kids run distance? It's because not many people are strong enough mentally and physically to take the demands of distance running. That's why distance runners are so respected.

i disagree, i look forward to my races and think more like the sprinter in your example before my races. however, i've never raced the 2 mile, so maybe that race is different, it does seem quite long and tedious.

Welcome to distance running, glad you could join us.
But seriously, those things you just listed are the things that make this sport so great. "Train Hard, Win Easy" that's pretty much the motto for distance running, although no matter what the winning isn't very easy (or at the very least is never not painful as s**t when you run a decent time)

The only reason I would ever envy the field people is because it seems more laid back (plus they can eat whatever they want, whenever they want), but part of the great thing about distance running is that people actually CARE about your races.

technically your saying distance running is stupid. cause its self torture and yes that last line is 110% true. and pretty funny.
Its pretty obvious that distance runners are masochists, which is someone who enjoys and gains pleasure off of self torture. Im one i know for sure cause theres been numerous workouts where i was almost vomitting my lungs out but at the same time never felt so good. :D

We love distance running because it demands the absolute most of you day in and day out. It tests how much you're willing to give, how much we're willing to fight. It alows us to live our lives to the fullest, gasping our lungs out in chase of our dreams. It hurts like hell, but it makes use feel alive like nothing else.

Yea... you gotta love distance running. You can come in totally terrible, bust your ass, and become incredible. And I agree with whoever said that about feeling good while on the verge of dying... its a lot better to finish an insane workout and feel good mentally but destroyed physically then to feel like a wuss.
And as for sprinters looking forward to 110h...how about the ones who whine about having to run the 400... a whole freaking lap.

Whats with the disrespect to sprinters? I respect what you distance guys do. We just give 100% for a short time, you guys give 100% for a long time.

It's because the stereotypical sprinter doesn't appreciate what the distance team does.
Anyhow, don't be mad about distance. Yeah its tough but thats how you build up toughness. It's the commradery and the runner's high (in sprinting and throwing you can't get that) that makes it so awesome.

People criticize distance running for being boring, but I think it's the opposite. During a distance race, you have so much more control over your pace, tactics, strategy, etc. than sprinting. In a 100 or a 200, all you do is go as fast as you possibly can until you cross the line. How is this less boring than distance? In sprinting it's always the same thing; you never have the option to go faster or slower, because you're already going top speed. No disrespect to sprinters at all, this is just one of the reasons why I personally prefer distance.
