Warwick - Aislinn Ryan's running aspirations may seem a mile high, but at least they will be within reach in college.

The highly sought after senior from Warwick is taking her training to the Rocky Mountains with her decision to attend the University of Colorado. Ryan is a state and national champion in cross country and on the track.

"I felt that was the best place to go to really reach for my running dreams,'' said Ryan, who hopes to be an Olympic distance runner. Her final decision came down to Colorado and Duke.

Colorado coach Mark Wetmore is renowned in college circles for producing great distance runners.

Six of his Colorado runners have combined for 11 NCAA individual cross country, indoor and outdoor championships. He has sent 17 of his current and former runners to the IAAF World Cross Country Championships since 1992, and he had three Olympians at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Colorado claimed the NCAA men's and women's cross-country team titles in 2004 - the men have 11 consecutive top-five finishes, the women have eight top fives since 1994.

"It's a tough program,'' Ryan said. "It's known for its training miles and its tough paces.''

Boulder is more than a mile (5,400 feet) above sea level, putting a premium on aerobic fitness - that is why world-class runners flock to the city to train.

"It is really tough,'' Ryan said. "I was doing an on-and-off workout - hard and easy - and I felt the blood going through my veins, seriously. It is a lot tougher, but I like bringing in new elements of running because it makes it more interesting and makes you work for new things.''

Ryan was the state girls' cross-country runner of the year. She won the state public school and Federation titles, placed second at the Footlocker Northeast Regional and finished third at Footlocker Nationals, an event she won in 2004. She ran the nation's seventh- and 10th-fastest times over 5-kilometers.

Ryan will be defending her 1-mile titles on Jan. 28 at the Boston Indoor Games and the Millrose Games on Feb. 3 in New York.
