Hi everyone, I'm new to throwing and I thought that this forum would be a good place to ask a question I have.

I'm a junior right now, and I typically run the 400 and 200 meters. The other day in practice I decided to give discus a try just for fun. I threw for about 30 minutes, and consistantly hit around 100 ft. by doing standing throws.
My question is this: Varsity at my school is 130 ft. What kind of chance do I have of reaching that if I practice this summer and do discus next year?
I'm about 6'4'' 170 lbs, and I plan on putting on another 10-15 lbs. between now and next season. I mostly just want to see if I can get varsity, but I will still take it seriously.
Also, how much distance should I expect to gain by learning the rotational style?

Thanks,

Jeff

Spinning gerenerally puts 15-20% on too your standing throw. Put for now keep practicing your standing throw because if you just started throwing you should be able to get to like 115or 120 with a stand

130' is a very reachable goal for anyone who is willing to put in some serious time. Watch lots of video.. compare what you do to that of known good throwers and evn an average Joe can throw 130-140' Seriously throw 50-100 throaws a day all summer and it's a done deal. Congratulations future School record holder. Now do the WORK!

If after a year of hard work and practice you can't throw 130' at 6' 4", 185, then there is something wrong with you =)

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I really appreciate it!
I just bought a practice disc to use this summer, so hopefully that will help.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Jeff,

Congrats on making the decision.. Now be diligent.. Make a calendar. Put your goal on the calendar. Give it a timeframe. Calculate the number of throws you want to complete during the summer.. figure out when you're going on vacation and all that and write it in.. Make it real... do it like it is a job that you get paid for.. you never know.. some day you might... WORK AT IT..

Good Luck

Your build is the typical build (although slightly thinner) for the guys on my team. I think if you are already throwing 100 feet with minimal knowledge, the weight gain, and summer workout drills will only help you to add to your standing throw (10-15 feet).

IMHO you should focus on learning the rotation via drills and less with the implement. Most year round throwers don't touch the implement until mid November-early December in prep for the upcoming season. I don't have many year round throwers, but I don't let them throw the implements until late fall. The summer (outside of competitions) and the fall are reserved for drills. I'm train the for heptathlon and personally I do not touch the shot put or javelin until that time period. BUT, because most HSers don't like this, it's ideal to split your workouts in half, throwing and drilling.

Off season weight lifting (squat, clean, snatch) will also help.
