Hey, new to the Jumps section.
I'm a sprinter (Best time in 55 - 6.55h, 100 - 11.6, 200m - 23.9) and my coach decided to put me in the Long Jump in our sectionals (never tried it and practiced it). I did it and my best jump was 17'11" (is that good or bad). Does anyone know any workouts I can do at home or practice because my school does not have a long jump pit.

that sucks man. your times are better than mine, but that's not saying much. 17'11" really isn't that good even for a first timer(unless you're a yungun). things you can do at home would be like gorrilla lunges(my coaches terminology), skips for hieght, and hit the weights. practice taking a few steps, droping your hips, and jumping off your long jump leg as high as you can. long jumping without a pit is tough because you need something to land in. we sometimes practice landings and technique on high jump pits(if your school has them). just develop more speed and strength since that is most of long jump anyway. i would suggest that if you can, you get quite a few practice jumps at the beginning of your first one or two meets for confidence. you might tire out and not perform too well at first, but in the long run you will improve more. check out all the jumps threads all the way back to the beginning for some good info. good luck.

for the first time ever, i wouldn't go as far as saying that 17'11" isnt that good... i'd say its more like average for someone of your speed. Personally, I jumped 15'2" my first time jumping.. which, granted, was as a freshman with no speed/muscle/or really anything at all, but still, for a new jumper, it is not uncommon to be a good 2 feet farther than your first time jump within 2 or 3 meets..
That being said, with your speed, if you have any "ups" at all, you could be jumpng 20's real soon. Like NVJ said.. take a ton of practice jumps and pop ups before you actually jump in meets at first!!! Indoors for me, that is the best time to practice, since we don't have an indoor pit either... good luck!
