What do you think? Here is a great 800 meter runner (1:51.8 anchor on the 4 x 800 @ Penn Relays), who should be able to run a mile in the 4:10-4:12 vicinity. However, I don't believe he has ever broken 4:18. Today in the 1600 meter run at the St. Anthony's Invitational he gotted outkicked by Ryan Hays of Shoreham Wading River in 4:22.

correct... he did run 4:20 for 1600m last year... I'm not sure he's a miler.. might be a pure 800m kid.. btw, let's cut him some slack here... he ain't about to go to the well every weekend.. especially after last weekend.. today might been his last semi-serious attempt at 1600m..

He's not that great of an XC runner, given his awesome 800 ability. Probably not much under 4:20, if at all.

He's not a slouch, either, though. Sean Tully finished 40th at states and came back to finish 35th at Feds--a good improvement if you ask me. He beat Charles White (who beat him at the section VIII meet) at Feds; Tully also beat Steve Murdock and was only 7.4 seconds behind CJ. Yeah, he seems like a better half-miler, but some of these posts are a little ridiculous.

Conor Lanz covered Bethpage in his best time about three seconds faster than Tully has. Conor finished 41st at states and 35th at Feds (24 seconds slower than Tully's Bowdoin mark but the 2002 meet was a mudbath). Lanz ran 4:18.78 as a junior for 1600m at the state meet with nowhere near Tully's footspeed, and had routine 4:2x 1600 marks and a couple of 9:4x 3200 marks. I see room for improvement from Tully without question, but if it's not his focus it's not in the cards right now.

With sean distance base and the foot speed that he has. he should be running 4:18 or better at this point. 1:51 800 split 2:30 1000 in door. To run 4:20 that is 32.5 sec per 200. he is very well capable of doing that the question is. is he willing to do it and is it what his coach wants at this time?

if hes concentrating purely on the 800 (which is what it seems to be) he should be in good mile shape (423) but not great mile shape because hes probably not doing miler workouts and as much distance running (im just speculating maybe he is)

For whatever the reason and Coach sessa is an excellent coach, Tully does not go up that well for all his 800 prowess..

he is neither a GREAT 400 guy or a GREAT 16 guy.

I believe it had as much to do with a style that is tough to maintain over 1600..way upp on his toes..as anything else.

He is a GREAT 800 racer and stick man for relays

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Tully run 49.xx for the 400, that's pretty good in my book.

I don't believe it was an open 400, I heard he split 49.xx in a relay sometime during the indoor season.

All I meant is, for a 1:51.8 split guy, he's not a 48 low realy guy ..OR a 4:12 1600 type, nothing more.

I'll bet he runs great mile at Villanova in two years though.
