What is the best spike for LJ/TJ combo?

check out eastbay.com for basically all the top end jumping spikes..
I think Asics has a lj/tj shoe (in blue?) out right now.. besides that, I'd say get a triple jump shoe (the reebok fosters being my preferance), and use it for long jump. I prefer this than the other way around, because without the heel padding in the long jump shoes, doing triple with them can be painful... Long jumping with the extra padding/weight, really is insignificant imho, and is a much better option than the former of hurting your heel with insufficiant padding.
Hopefully you can make out what i'm trying to say through all my rambling
good luck!

How many of you notice a difference between jumping in jump spikes versus sprint spikes for the long jump? I once forgot my jump spikes (Nike LJ) at a meet and jumped in a pair of old superflys and I jumped consistently better than I did in any meet before that. I wondered then if I was really wasting my money buying a pair of $100 jump spikes. I would suggest borrowing a pair first to see how you do if at all possible.

Different spikes for long jump make a minimal difference..
I jumped 20' in flats on a rubber indoor track.. and then jumped 19'3" in jumping spikes at a great track a week later... Overall, you'll do slightly better with the right spikes, but truthfully, half the reason I have long jump spikes is because I simply have a spike obsession
*remember, a lot of your long jump is just pure speed.. and some days you'll be faster than others. No spike can make up for having a "slow" day, and vice a versa*

i jumped in asics cyber jump for long and triple last year because they were cheap. they were the first time i ever had spikes so i really didn't know what to look for. i had really bad heal pain as aiden discribed you might get. i got some blue nike sprint spikes from savers for $3 and i might long jump this year in them. i do plan on getting triple jump spikes or something with more padding because the heal pain can really kill your jumps some days. i would suggest triple jump specific or pole vault spcific spikes for the long/triple combo.

I agree with the heel pain. I just bruised my heels again for the second time this season and it's really starting to make me mad. I HIGHLY suggest getting triple jump specific shoes for the TJ, they make a world of a difference on the heels. By the way I jumped 48-8 this weekend and thats how I hurt myself, since we can't where spikes indoor.

gary.. how fast do you run the sprints?
jw
for everyone else.. I'm about a 6.8-6.9 handtimed 55m/24.0 200m runner right now, and jumping 42's and 20' in the triple and long... What kind of times are you all putting down in the sprints (55, 100, 200)??? I'm wondering how my sprint time to jump distance ratio compares to everyone elses?

My times for sprints are:
55m - 6.4
100 - 11.06
200 - 22.6
They aren't great just average I would say.

I triple in zoom LJ's and it's fine for me
same spike plate anyways .. Tj's just have more support

Well not anymore...The new Zoom LJ 3's have a different plate than the Zoom TJ's. The old Zoom LJ's though used the same plate as the Zoom TJ's.

So then what are we talking about. I haven't really seen a clear anser as to either yes, buy some, or no, don't. I'm kind of on the bubble right now. I'm not sure whether to buy TJ spikes or not. I already have regular sprinting spikes, but I'm unsure if I should spend the money for the TJ's or not. I need a suggestion.

if triple is an important event to you, you will be doing it often, and your current spikes don't have much padding, buy them. if not, whatever.

No FAT time for the 55m because I only ran it twice this season.

I don't know dude, 6.4 for the 55 is hardly an average time. It would put you on the elite list. 22.6 in the 200 would just miss the list.
And regarding spikes, I use sprint spikes so I don't really know if TJ/LJ spikes help out, but when I got HJ specific spikes they made an amazing difference.

I think he means average, compared to his more steller jumping marks...
everything is relative..... it depends who you are comparing yourself to
BTW.. thepreofjumping.... get the triple jump spikes for sure, if you are even the least bit serious about jumping (which i think you must be if you are on dyestat's jumping forum in the first place)

Up until this Christmas, I had been jumping in 2 year old asics xc spikes, which I guess are better for TJ than sprinting spikes because of the padding. But, I switched to the Nike TJ spikes and they are really good and nice for triple jumping. They took a little getting used to, but they are working great. They are fine for long jump too, I really don't think long jump specific spikes are that important unless you are crazy good, like 25+ feet.

I agree with the fact that the Nike TJ's are awesome because I have 4 pairs. I'm on my second pair right now and I will probably break out a new pair next weekend at the Coca-Cola Hall of Fame Classic. Also I beleive that they are good for long jump too, but I think that if you are also serious about long jump than you should invest in a pair of long jump shoes becuase they are lighter and take all that extra weight off that a TJ spike will have. Weight is a major factor in the jumps so the less weight on your feet can make a difference in the motion of your legs in the air and the feel when you take-off. If you don't care and would rather stick to using a pair of TJ spikes then so be it.
Joyce I am going to Eastern States! I will be there with the HJ'er from my team and probably our hurdler and sprinter. We might even put our relay together. But I'll be there for sure and I can't wait.

Haha, I really can't wait. My goal will be 50' by then, assuming that I can get 49' at the Hall of Fame Classic and I want to take down that Armory Field House Record. I think it's 48'-11.25" or .75" something like that, I remeber seeing it last year.

You know what's scary? We have almost the exact same 100 time and you have the same 200 time I do, we squat/clean the exact same amount, and yet you're jumping like 7 feet further than I am.
:(

A friend of mine is pretty much the same way. He jumps 43 on a good day and usually 41-42 and benches around the same (a little less), squats a little bit more, and cleans a little less. How much do you weigh? How tall are you?

Shorter/skinnier than you; 5'7", 135.

5'7" is a tough height to work with as far as triple jump is concerned... I'm 5'11", and the height still definately hurts me
GJones
02-11-2006, 01:27 PM
Well the height does not hurt you as much as you may think it does. With shorter people you need to work different things than taller people. For example work more with flexibility and form. Jonathan Edwards is short but he is the best ever because he was flexible and his form was flawless, he wasn't fast either.

Which high jump shoes do you have? I am thinking about getting the adistar high jump. How much of a difference do you think they would make over wearing just regular spikes?

I wear Asics Cyber Jumps, and I friggin love them. They give you a big advantage, since they have spikes in the heel, allowing you to run a more effective curve. My heels used to slide all the time when I wore sprint spikes before I got these. I think they are definately worth getting.
P.S. you can get the older model for 30 bucks on Eastbay.

I was going to get the older TJ's, the black ones on eastbay, I was so excited because they were only $29.99, so basically I was jumping up and down. I'm just bout to order them, I click the size drop down and they only had them in 9, 9.5 14.0 and 15.0. I was pissed. Does anyone know where I can get the same deal in an 11.5?
HJfrick

usually they are really cheap because they have limited sizing, it'll be hard to find them the same price in your size.
