I'm seriously considering getting up to 100 miles a week this summer, using the methods of Arthur Lydiard. Mentally, I know I can do it, but what are the phisiological risks involved? And why?

How good are you and what is your current mileage like?

Mileage fluxates from person to person, dramatically. Just do wut u think is improving YOU not someone who you are modeling after, even though it is good to have a person to look up to. Just do what will give YOU a good workout..........

I essentially suck at the moment. I run around a 5:10 mile. and an 11:15 two mile. I'm really trying to change that though, so I can be a lot more competitive during XC season. I've done around 45-50 miles per week in the past, without too much trouble.

There's really no need to run 100 miles a week, especially at your current fitness level. Run a steady 60+ mpw all summer and you will make vast improvements come XC.

If you want to do it do it. There is no doubt (as long as you don't get iunjured) that if you run 100 mpw you will get substntially better. Just make sure you strech every day, and warmup, and consider doing portions of your mileage barefoot, and the rest in flats to lower your chances of injury.

No offense, but for you right now 100mpw is probably not the best of ideas. Judging from your pr's, your endurance isn't your strength. I'd say therefore to just try to maximize your mileage at no more than 50, but run 50 consistently in singles all summer. Not to bash, but I don't think you're currently in the shape to run 100mpw, and building up from your current state to 100mpw takes more than simply a few weeks or even a full summer. But do whatever you want and make sure you talk to your coach about it. He should be your first resource.

don't go for 100mpw straight away. It's not a good idea- now i know there are people that do it and they end up fine but most people that do it don't end up happy. That said- building up to about 60 miles a week--- consistantly, would be fine, and then go from there. Perhaps if you can do 60mpw this season a few times, try for 80 or so the following and if you really want to, go for 100 after that.
I'm not sure 100+mpw is a great idea for a highschooler. 80mpw would be pushing it. Again, i know there are people in hs that do 120mpw, and their fine, however, i do believe 80mpw to be enough. Like someone allready said, do enough for you, not enough for ritz, lindgren, or rupp.
