Ok, here is the question: What are some running related occupations? Physical therapy, podiatrist, etc? what are some other good jobs. I still don't know what I want to be, but I would really like to do something that in some way has to do with running.

Don't you have to be over 50 or something to be an official? :p
Just kidding... but seriously, I've never seen a young official.

Personal Trainer--I guess that goes along with coach.

You can be a reporter for meets, writer for newspapers/magazines who focuses on running, open a running or shoe store, etc.

at my high school, seniors can take sports officiating instead of gym. I didn't do it but one of our best runners is going to try it next year. You learn to officiate for two different sports, one in each semester, so he is going to do track and basketball. That would be a pretty cool job do to in your spare time, (being a track official that is) however I doubt it would work very well as a full time job.

I'm in the same boat. I'm an Athletic Training major, but I hope to go to PT/Podiatric medicine...or get my masters in Kineseology. I'd like to have a practice and then coach on my free time/have a team/store.

there ARE TONS of running related jobs.

If you ever go to Nike, and look for running related jobs they are chock full with them.

It requires brains though some of them

theres marketing, advertising, resaerch and developement, manufacturing.

Plus much more. A month ago i found a shoe rep, where the shoe rep takes spikes and shazzle to meets all around the globe. The starting pay was about 45,000 with free airfair and stuff. Pretty cool gig, plsu you get to see the world/ all the new stuff.

Theres TONS TONS TONS of running related jobs you dont even think of.
Its not only nike, think about all the other running shoe companies.

exercise physiology is another one. it's what i'm going into...basically the body's reactions to exercise and using it to train athletes. i'm also going to do a masters in nutrition to go along with that. but exercise phys is definely a cool field :)

Right now, I'm thinking about majoring in Material Science and Engineering so I can engineer materials for running shoes/clothes.

my coach is a sports agent. he's represented some pretty big names. when he's not doing that he does the timing, etc for track meets.

Something that's always interested me is shoe design, because most running injuries originate from biomechanical issues that are facilitated by heelstrike and toe whip etc--basically, the biomechanical issues start with the feet. But there would be a lot of physics involved in shoe design--equilibrium, torque, friction... it must be really involved! Edit: Especially with all of the debate over trainers vs. flats, there has to be some kind of market developing for shoes that are going down in chunkiness. It would be an interesting career to get into.

Also, jaylie, if you're a big science person, you could get into some kind of research related field--athletic performance research, that is. Field research with stuff like V02 max, heart rate, oxygen use, lactate threshold... that kinda stuff.

I've been thinking about the same sort of stuff. I'm into science as well as running, and I also play music. I'm still years away from having to choose my career, but I may be a coach/running doctor. The shoe design idea sounds interesting too.

I'm in the same boat as you Jaylie, im probably going to study physical therapy or massage therapy. It's a job that is in decently high demand, both in schools, private buisnesses, and for military people who come home wounded. I would suggest that you look into it more and try to setup a job shadow so that you can see what type of things you would be doing if you took it up as a career.

I would say get a degree in Sports Medicine or Kenesiology, they lead off into many different things you can do still related with Running.
