View Full Version : 3A District 4 league meets/districts

Alright, it's just about that time we start talkin about the league and district meets, so we might as well make a thread. For the GSHL, I really hope that we go 10 deep in the 1600, that way I can get in  this will be the only year that my time might not get me in, and that would just suck because coach never let me run any other time (last year because I was injured, soph. year because I didn't break 5)
Here's what I have as the preliminary entries, with the assumed allocations.
800m
1. Craig Kochis, Kelso, 1:59.00
2. Donny McCorkle, Columbia River, 2:00.77
3. Shane Geiger, Camas, 2:02
4. Nick Jones, Kelso, 2:05
5. Tyler Shirley, Columbia River, 2:05.53
6. Miles Nelson, Washougal, 2:05.68
7. Jeremy Johns, Kelso, 2:05.90
8. Nate Hoover, Mark Morris, 2:06.00
9. Jeff Bishop, Fort Vancouver, 2:10
(10. Rob Monroe, Mark Morris, 2:12)
1600m
1. Chris Rodriguez, Kelso, 4:15.2
2. Shane Geiger, Camas, 4:34.4
3. Tyler Shirley, Columbia River, 4:37.96
4. Donny McCorkle, Columbia River, 4:39?
5. Eric Lauritzen, Camas, 4:39.0
6. Miles Nelson, Washougal, 4:40
7. Nate Hoover, Mark Morris, 4:42.7
8. Kyle Klegg, Camas, 4:42.9
9. Aaron Cook, Kelso, 4:48
10. Jose Gonzalez, Fort Vancouver, 4:48?
11. Spencer Johnson, Washougal, 4:48?
12. Rob Monroe, Mark Morris, 4:53
(13. Ryan Hepler, Mark Morris, 4:59)
(??14. Nick Kissinger, Mark Morris, 5:03)
3200m
1. Chris Rodriguez, Kelso, 9:25
2. Greg Kubitz, Kelso, 9:52
3. Duane Esselstrom, Camas, 10:02.22
4. Andrew Lee, Columbia River, 10:06.49
5. Aaron Cook, Kelso, 10:33
6. Tyler Tjomsland, Mark Morris, 10:35
7. Kyle Klegg, Camas, 10:42
8. Jose Gonzalez, Fort Vancouver, 11:01.29
9. Aaron Hicks, Kelso, 11:01
10. Tim Olson, Camas, 11:02
Next were 3 Washougal kids, I don't know their times, somewhere between 10:55 and 11:10
(14. Mike Bobbee, CR, 11:11.61)
(14. Sam Jason, MM, 11:14)
(15. Nick Kissinger, MM, 11:16)
To me, it looks like we could have 3 of the 4 3200 runners advance to state from the GSHL, all 4 from the GSHL in the mile, and all 4 in the 800 from the GSHL. Zelenak the only northern guy getting to go, unless Lee and Esselstrom both beat him ;)

We send 8 to subs, and top 4 to districts as far as I remember. Roughly, I think this is what it's gonna look like, though I haven't decided exactly what I plan on running yet
800m
1. Tustison, 11 Yelm, 2:06.91
2. Alsin, 10 Black Hills, 2:09.54
3. Josh, ? Yelm, 2:09
4. Warren, ? Centralia, 2:10.18
5. Johnson, ? Centralia, 2:10.31
6. Buehner, ? Aberdeen, 2:11
7. White, 12 Tumwater, 2:12
1600m
1. Delimont, 11 North Thurston, 4:47
2. Zelenak, 11 Black Hills, 4:48 (considering it...;))
3. Mohoric, 11 Centralia, 4:49
3. Garutto, 10 Yelm, 4:49
5. McCowan, 10 Tumwater, 4:52
6. Montermini, 11 Tumwater, 4:56
7. Paulson, 11 Tumwater, 4:58
8. Pong, 10 Tumwater, 4:58
3200m
1. Zelenak, 11 Black Hills, 9:58
2. Mohoric, 11 Centralia, 10:56.0
3. Montermini, 11 Tumwater, 10:57
4. Garruto, 10 Yelm, 11:00.84
5. Delimont, 11 North Thurston, 11:02
6. Perrine, 10 Timberline, 11:14.20
7. Harmon, 10? River Ridge, 11:17
8. Ashley, 11 Tumwater 11:20
So yeah, unless Tustison edges out Shane or Eric (that 2:06 from him is way back from the Yelm invite, I haven't found anything more recent) I could be the lone Pac-niner in the distance field at state. I'd say Garutto has a REAL outside chance in the 1600, if some people have bad races and he PR's bigtime, which, from watching everyone run, I think he's more likely to do than anyone else.
You sure about Lee in the 3200? I was talking with Duane and he seemed to think Andrew was gonna go with the 800, but it'd make more sense to run the 32.

I wasn't sure what he planned on doing, but he would do better if he ran the 3200, so I made the decision for him. :) Remember, this is all preliminary.
And yes, RunnerBoy, Chris is rather dominating... that's what happens when you're one of the best runners in the state in an area with such a relatively low population (i.e. not Seattle-Tacoma)
EDIT: Lee would be better for the subdistrict and district meet in the 3200 rather than the 800, but he'll get killed in either at state ;)

Also Eric Lauritzen quit do to back problems so he will not be running at subs or districts.
And Duane was thinking that Lee would do the 800 because that is what Lee said during the Camas v. River meet, but it seems his coaches have other plans for him. My guess is that his coaches will put him in the 3200 even though he truly wants to run the 800.

No, he would single so that he is fresh for his best race, whether it is the 800 or 3200. If he doubled, he would never get out of districts in any event.
Was Nelson's time from Washougal Invite? That was about what he ran, but I wasn't sure of the time so I didn't include it.

Nelson's time was from the Washougal Invite.
RE: Lee -- I was assuming that he hasn't run his "best" 1600m yet. I mean, a decent 3200 time, a decent 800 time....seems like he could/should be able to run a decent (sub 4:30) 1600m.
If what you're saying is the way River'll go, then I'd assume he's going to run the 3200 only. The 800m is always a dice throw....and the 3200m seems more of a lock for him.

RE: RE: Lee
He ran the 16 at Pasco, so I was assuming that was about as good as he can do.
I'm still not sure what Jose Gonzalez from Fort Vancouver will do, though. His best time, comparatively, is his 32 time, but he has a decent 1600 time (4:47?) to go along with it, so he may double... meaning Nick won't ever get to go to the sub district meet.

Pasco isn't the ideal situation in which to PR....44 runners, two waterfall starts -- people collapsing in on you. If you're not in the lead group of 10 in that first 200, you're either boxed in, or running in lane 3 or 4.
I'm not sure what Lee's finishing speed is though....ever get a last lap split on him?

05-10-2005, 06:43 PM
Well, all the River guys always have great kicks at the end of the race (especially Lee and McCorkle). I'm sure their last laps aren't too bad.
McCorkle came through at 3:30 against us, and finished with a 4:39. Lee didn't run the 16 against us, he ran the 800... came through at 59 and finished with a 2:04

For the person that asked earlier, Kelso is a 9-lane track.
More on Lee I talked to him at the River Twilight meet and he gave me the same information. He wants to run the 800 meter and run a 2:00 flat. I agree with him have a better chance in the 3200 but he seems determined not to run it at subs.
Other things needed to be changed on the GSHL Shane ran a 2:02 800 not 2:04 and knowing our coach there are good chances that he will only run the 1600 instead of doubling.

Well, since his coaches are the ones that enter him into the meet ... he may not have much say in it.

I'm thinking Dorsey will not triple and drop the 3200...
Same with Freker/Gussin, unless they triple, which one will they drop?
Laverty will scratch the 800...
Jones are you going to triple? What about Schultz?
Anyways, I guess it'll all be settled saturday...

Wow, I didn't even see that post by Ed. Why would Shane want to only run the 1600? He's got a great chance to make state in both the 16 and 8, he has great times in both, why would he bother to single? Good choice to double, Shane.
Oh, and about the times, I've already been corrected on that a few times, I just put that originally because that is what I was told was the "official time", but that they thought it was 2:02 instead.

Kat Ellis (CR) and Boogard (K) (assuming they both double) will probably be the best 2 in the 16 and 32. Flinn (Camas) and another Kelso or River girl will get 3rd and 4th in the 16, Flinn and Tiffany Hunter (MM) will get 3rd and 4th in the 32... Mendoza (K) should win the 800, and the girl from Fort Vancouver and Sam Johnson (MM) and will get make districts, and someone from Camas/Kelso/River will too.
That's all if Boogard runs the 32 instead of the 8, I don't remember what she normally does.
Times, for reference:
3200
Kat Ellis and Erin Flinn both around 11:40-11:50
Boogard ? I'm guessing around 11:40
Tiffany Hunter around 12:15
1600
Boogard around 5:25?
Flinn high 5:20s
Ellis probably 5:20s
800
Mendoza low 2:20s?
Fort Girl low 2:30s
Sam Johnson 2:32

Sam Johnson would be faster if she ever trained with us ...
Her workouts:
jog 1 lap
practice relay handoffs (runs for 200m)
For the one interval workout she did:
2x400 w/ 2 minutes rest @ 80
We made her run the mile once ... she won it, so we've made her run it ever since (3 times) and she's won every time... only at 5:53 though

Shawna Carlson ... she went to state in XC, right? What about those other north girls that made state, what happened to them? Meghan Baker, Kathryn Arthur, Kati Davis, Brita Cass ...
Yup. Baker's running well, she's been anchoring their 4x400 everytime we've seen them and I think 1600, I don't have any times for her though. Haven't seen anything from Arthur, Davis is pole vaulting (2nd at Shelton I think, with a PR of 10-6), Cass... she's another Yelm girl right? I don't know how she's been doing.

Also btw i thought Chad Mntermini was just outkicked by a second by delimont, that would put him around 10:39 for the 3200, but for some reason he is not in the results... (Did he get DQ'd? he ran outside the white line alot, but who doesnt around that lonely 250M corner...) anyway yeah, Jason doesn't stop improving... i dont think he has had a race where he hasnt pr'd, he said he was dead tired after the 4:40, but you never know when the PRs will stop.. hes got a bright future.

At Shaner, two small Shelton guys took off and lead the first 2+ laps. One was a freshman and I think the other was a sophomore, probably the same freshman.

Going to both Shaner and Freshman invite would be tough. The two meets are within 2 days of eachother, the 2 races probably within 24 hours. I doubt that he did both. But I don't remeber Shelton guys leading the 32 for 2 laps....but you'd probably know better than I would, considering that you were in the race.

Jonathon Stewart is throwing shotput instead of running the 200 or triple jump?

Yup. It's a shame he isn't doing the 200 up against Jake. That's some crazy range though, 100/shotput/long jump (he's over 23 feet! and this is his first year jumping!). I'd still like to see what he can do in a competitive 400 though.
Jake in the 200 surprised me as well (he's in the 21's). I was expecting the long jump instead. I guess when you're as good as those two you can do just about whatever you want and win.

lee can't run a 4:34. trust me, i'm on his team. he hasn't ever beaten me in a dual meet.
looks like your own teammate's doing most of the doubting here;).
Anyways, I was just skeptical of why you kept running the 3200, since I remembered you being at least 2:01 last year in the 800, figured that was your stronger race. But you qualified for districts, guess I was wrong there. See you friday.

C-Rod took it start to finish around 4:30-31. I went from 5th or 6th to 2nd in the last lap, Shane gave me a scare about 50m from the line, and Lee was right behind in 4th. 8 second PR for me at 4:34, Shane and Lee each dropped a couple seconds too, right around 4:34-36ish. Heat wasn't that bad really, and Shane said he, Lee and I probably negative splitted (first lap 69, didn't catch the second one).
Soph from Yelm, Chris Garutto, ran a gutsy race hanging in the top 4 for most of the race, probably finished just under 4:40. Um... Jayson McCown from Tumwater was next, then Nate Hoover in 7th, Ryan Mohoric 8th, Micah Pong 9th. I know Micah's time was 4:51, don't know about the rest. Better head back out there soon though, wonder how everyone else is doing.

Splits I got for the "pack" for the first three laps, then Shane & you at the end (roughly) --

Great PR....Shane ran 4:34 and change at Pasco.

I live like 10 minutes away, and I wanted to get out of the heat. So I came home:D.
I didn't like that 3200. It wasn't really a race to win. Chris, Greg, and I opened a gap on Lee and Cook after a couple laps. Out of the three of us, none of us really tried pushing the pace, never tried to take the lead or anything. Very boring race, didn't like it at all. I don't like beating people like that but hey, that's how it goes. Won't happen at state though.

As fabulous as that is, I think what ALee is refering to is our boys 4X4 team setting the meet record. Also, Connor Tarr made up a ton of ground on Kelso, passing them in the last 100 of the 3rd leg and then Cramer holding on and outkicking Kelso at the end. So, as grand as your 4X4 team did, I think our boys 4X4 team is reason enough to celebrate.

Heh, I'm just full of surprises huh? ;) to be fair though, that's my first real competitive 1600 in years, had no idea what I could do in it. So I was probably overly cautious the first couple laps. And the pack was so tight that when I was in 5th place I was only a second or two behind you and Lee anyways.
