My AAU coach sez that ive been using the wrong pair of shoes, they area basically sprint spikes according to him. My PR in those spikes is 46' 7". He claims that if i get sum triple jump shoes, i can go atleast 50' by the end of the year. Does anyone kno if the shoes make a difference

Will they make a difference? Yes

Will they alone cause a 46'7" jumper to go over 50'? no

They're definitely worth getting though regardless of what time of improvement they add to your distance due to the fact that triple jumping in sprint spikes makes you ridiculously injury prone. The necessary support to handle the rigors of the event just isn't there.

While we're on the topic of shoes, how many of you do your triple jump workouts in basic running shoes? This is another area where the wrong shoe can make you more injury prone. If you use a running shoe, you want something that has both good heel and ankle support. Anyone working at your local running store should be able to help you find the proper shoe. Just explain to them that you're a triple jumper and that you need the extra support for all the bounding and jumping drills you'll be doing. Any competent worker will be able to direct you to a shoe that will fulfill your needs. Worst case scenario use a lighter pair of basketball shoes for your jump workouts. IIRC Saucony generally has a style or two of running shoe that are well built for the type of support you'll need.

I personally jump in xc spikes becuase i haven't gotten around to buyong some tj specific spikes yet. But, i figured the extra cushion in the xc heel is better than jumping in sprinting spikes. By they way i jump in the asic 15-50s and my PR is 44'7" as a junior in high school.
