i'm a guy and my coach tried to have me take 17-19 steps but i'm short(5'9") and really skinny 140 so I take tiny steps. in races I usually take 19-23 steps
i run 42.5's

Im 6'2"
I used to take 13 steps between the first and 2nd hurdle and 15 for the rest of the race.

You're 5'9" and you take 23 steps! Oh my God! You should easily be able to 16 through the first part of the race and then maybe 17 home. I coach a girl who is 5'7" and she 17s the whole way.

I am obviously a girl and I think during 300 hurdle repeats my coach has counted me at 15 or 17 steps usually

you should be counting on your own. It will help you stay consistant.

Last year I got done to a 47.25 and this year so far I have been at 48.1's but every single meet we have had it has been raining and horrible weather so as long as I stay best at my school and keep improving I will be happy! and it is hard to count on ur own when you are trying to keep good form and make sure you are on with your steps!

Quite the opposite for me. I found that I couldn't NOT count my steps, in pretty much ANY race. Counting my steps in the intermediate hurdles became so natural to me that I would end up subconsciously counting my steps in an open 400 too. I'd be running along, and suddenly I realize I'm in the middle of counting "61, 62,63, 64 . . . "
It should become second nature to any intermediate hurdler.

I think it is so hard to count my steps! How do you keep good form and count at the same time?... I didnt count the other day and I pr'ed with a 46.73 and I stuttered 2 of the hurdles a little...
propain

counting helps me know which leg I'm going to go off of each time. that way, I don't stutter (usually). But then again, I count my steps in everything. even HJ.
oh, sorry to ask you so many questions fastfemale7, but did you by chance have someone count your steps when you raced the other day? thanks.

I guess most of you (or all of you?) are too young to remember the Sandra Farmer-Patrick commercials with her counting her steps really quick.
"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleventwelv ethirteenfourteenKICK! Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleventwelv ethirteenfourteenKICK!
What'd you expect, Shakespeare? I'm working here!"
Great commercial. Anyway, after you hurdle long enough, and work on counting your strides in practice, it becomes virtually subconscious, to the point where no additional concentration or focus is spent doing it, it just "happens" as a natural part of your race.
Try consciously counting your steps in practice when you do any kind of workout that involves going over the intermediates. The tough thing about practicing them is, you have to pretty much go all out in practice to ensure that your steps will be the same as when you are in a race. This is also why you won't see people in big meets (World Champs, Olympics) running signficantly slower in the opening rounds/semis, because you can't really run a "slow" 300h/400h without your steps being way off.

or because everyone is top caliber and they need to runa good race to get a good seed and hopefully make it to finals and or place... im sure it has nothing to do with tehre steps cause theyve been doing it for so long they just run teh race focus on form and stuff and there muscle memory takes care of running the same steps as always

It has almost EVERYTHING to do with their steps.
Your argument that they're trying to get good seed times doesn't hold water. Obviously this is one of the goals, but it's also a goal to conserve as much energy as possible, which is why you see people in the OPEN 400m running much slower in the opening rounds.
It doesn't matter about how long they've been doing the races. What I mean is, if you slow down and "dog" it in the prelims/semis, you run the very real risk of ending up with different numbers of strides between the hurdles (a higher number, say, 14 instead of 13), thus throwing you off your rhythm.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

No i actually didnt...I think a team mate might have gotten my race on tape but im not sure.... I am sad tho because I had my last 300hurdle race of the year because my team needs me for relays and I dont think I could make it to state this year in hurdles.... I did pr tho with a 46.73 which was like 1 second away from state! I will work on counting my steps next year!

I am 6'2" and took 13 steps. Sometimes I had to alternate using 14 steps over the last 2 hurdles.

I run both 110's (16.1) and 300's (41.99), i go over the hurrdle with my left foot, but can't seem to stay consistent when i take off out of the blocks. Sometimes i start with my right and sometimes with my left....(i only go to Track once a week because i am also in tennis.) What leg do most LEFTYS start with for both 110 and 300's?.......oh and how many steps?

Didn't count the strides in high school, but now in college i run 15 strides through 5 hurdles then try and switch down to 16 through 6/7/8 and by then its whatever comes up.
high school-38.9 300 IM Hurdles
college frosh-54.16-400 IM Hurdles
Question:
Which is a better development event for the college 400 Hurdles, the 300 hurdles or the 400 low hurdles?
Interesting fact, in most races in Europe and Africa they don't have the 8th hurdle in the 300 Hurdles.

in NY they dont change anything from 400h in HS to 400h in college... we run the 400h at the intermediate hurdle height and thats how i think it should be...
300h should only be run in scrimmages and such meets that dont really count for much... and 400 low hurdles? is that like the girls event or something? cuz thats what they run here... but i think thats what theyre "intermediate" height is

That's sure is one blazing 300h time, I mean I'd be impressed with a 300m time that fast but with hurdles...wow...i mean wow, that like a US number one by like 3 seconds almost, thats just crazy, I am amazed.
Yeah, jk, they meant 300h even though it says 300 :p
