Matt Tebo the Junior sensation ran a 9:14 3200m at over 5,000 ft elevation. Many in New Mexico believe that the race was the fastest 3200 within the state borders by a HS athlete. I was wondering if any NM people out there know of the top times by individuals within the state borders. I know that Arturo Jimenez of Tucumcari ran a sub 9:00 in AZ and I know of the state records but I am curious about other times.

shadrack obviously isnt a native new mexican like these guys but he ran a 8:45 2 mile which would be like 8:41-42 for the 3200. thats all i know

my guesses are as follows
Brandon Leslie, Gallup(1994) 9:15
Shadrack Kiptoo, La Cueva(2004) 9:17
Matt Twist, Academy(1996) 9:17
those are the only ones I know of under 9:20
Other guys that may or may not have broken 9:20 are Chip Smith(Sandia) in the late 80s I think, Glen Morgan and Simon Gutierrez(both Del Norte) in the early 80s, and Tony(?) Sandoval(Los Alamos) in the 70s. I don't know what Arturo Jimenez's best 3200 in NM was. All I can find is a 9:32 race at Sepulveda(current meet record). I would have to do some serious digging to find those guys' times.

I am pretty sure the All-Time progression of times by High School athletes in New Mexico for the 2 mile / 3200 goes like this:

9:25. Ric Rojas - Los Alamos - 1975? (2 mile)
9:17.67 Chip Smith - Sandia - 1987
9:15.96 Brandon Leslie - Gallup - 1994
9:14.00 Matt Tebo - Eldorado - 2006

I'm not sure before Ric Rojas

One small problem with Tebo's mark is that Milne does not have an inside rail. I still think he will be better when he gets to run at UNM.

In terms of the all-time native New Mexican's best times, regardless of place, goes like this:

9:25. Ric Rojas - Los Alamos - 1975? (2 mile)
9:17.67 Chip Smith - Sandia - 1987
9:12.38 Chip Smith - Sandia - 1987 (2 mile)
9:01.?? Arturo Jimenez - Tucumcari - 1991?

Some Notable times are:
Alex Romero - Albuquerque HS - 9:05 - 2003
Brandon Leslie - Gallup 9:07 - 1994

Glenn Morgan didn't run at low-altitude that often except for Kinney Nationals '83 & '85.
I think when Simon Guitterrez ran at low altitude he stepped up to the 10,000. I am not sure about Ric Rojas or Tony Sandoval at low altitude.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Tebo is in the fast heat of the 3200 at Arcadia so I guess we'll see what he can really do at sea level with competition

Tebo is now the undisputed 3200 champion in New Mexico. No high school athlete has ever run faster than 9:07 in the Land of Enchantment. He did it at UNM, with an inside rail, at the state meet and all by himself.

I was talking to some coaches at the NM State meet about ranking Tebo with the state's best of the past and many talked about how Brandon Leslie dominated fields in Cross Country and Track. The one aspect that I love about track is that the course is the same for everyone. Leslie ran 9:15 as a Junior and now Tebo ran 9:07 as a junior. Tebo has not dominated the competition the way that Leslie did but that has more to say about the level of competition in NM and the depth. When Leslie ran HS, Academy and Los Alamos were no where near as good as they are now and many other teams have emerged with quality individuals. In the 90's Gallup's JV could have earned a trophy at state.

A year ago at 5000ft in Utah a wisconsin kid named Rombough posted a 9:09 full two mile, that is a 9:05 3200.

What should be noted is that no U.S. high school athlete has broken 9 minutes for the 3200m over 5000ft. Tebo seems, or appears to have a shot next year if he doesnt get complacent, and continues to press for improvement.
