im from wisconsin and i was just wondering if there was as much of an outcry against syracuse changing from orangemen to orange as there has been for marquette changing from the golden eagles to "the gold." now the MU board of trustees, because of how many people hated it, is going to change it again. was there any movement towards this in syracuse or is it just us?

I'm not sure (I no longer live in New York State and I don't keep up with Big East stuff), but there's a bit of a difference between the Golden Eagles and the Orangemen, if the name is what I think it's derived from. Isn't the name a reference to the army of William of Orange and the invasion of Ireland? To me, the Gold just seems like a copy of Crimson, the Cardinal, and Crimson Tide.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I'm pretty bad at keeping up with sports teams from outside of my school's conference that aren't Stanford/Colorado/Arkansas type running programs. I take it they've changed your name now a second time? I hadn't even realized that Syracuse was undergoing a name change in the first place. I could also be wrong about the Orangemen reference--but that's the only other manner in which I've ever heard the term used.
Personally, within reason, I think the students of any university should be the ones who decide what the mascot ought to be, with an emphasis on continuity (and not two changes each decade). Golden Eagles doesn't seem offensive or particularly lame. Why the change? Now I'm curious.

There was a big uproar when St. John's went from the Redmen to the Red Storm a number of years back. I remember they tried to appease the fans for a while by having an actual "Red Man" mascot (think Blue Man Group but in red with a top hat, etc.); he was absolutely villified by the fans, who taunted and abused him without mercy. They quickly pulled him as their mascot after a few games.

I agree that it is totaly different, the orangemen were an anti-Irish group of protestants living in Ulster that would persecute catholics, it is understandable that a college wouldn't want to be associated with this racism.

well first of all, they changed the name from warriors in 1994. apparently some native american got mad that we used a native american image in our warrior logo. now since we're moving into the big east the school decided it was a good time to change it again because of an enormous outcry to go back to warriors. so they made the announcement 2 weeks ago to change to "the gold" but everyone had been expecting an announcement to go back to warriors. now theyre retracting the gold and starting a new name selection process that involves the people associated with the university. big load of bs to me....warriors doesnt necessarily mean native americans. school still wont just change the logo and keep the name, however.
