So, i was just wondering, me being a runner and all, how much some of you guys can throw down in the bench press. My max is 165, and im a 400/800 guy.

benching isn't necessarily the best thing for throwing...
med balls all the way!

I think bench does little in throwing I think lower body muscle is most important

I'm at 335 (I weigh 200#)....being able to bench a lot does absolutely nothing for your throwing at all. although it can help you, it is definitely overrated.

but doing at bunch of quick explosive reps can help w/ shot. but hang cleans snatches and med balls do the most

hey, tabortiger, how far do you throw shot (if you throw it). one would imagine a 200' disk thrower to be able to put the shot out a ways
by the way, i bench 215 (i weight about 205) but where it matters...clean 195

I just started spinnig this year, and so far my best is 57'10''. I should get it out a bit further considering I threw almost 56 with the glide a year ago. so yeah......

and what are your goals for the extended future in disk, national record maybe?
tabortiger
04-27-2006, 10:33 PM
ohhhhhhhh that's a little far down the road for me right now. I'm just sticking to this year and this year only as far as goals go. Right now all I'm aiming for is the national soph. record of 201-2 by Kevin Bookout (who is an absolute stud). but yeah as far as other goals we'll just see later on about those. I mean sure that'd be great to throw in the 230's. but it's still a long ways off and a lot of time left for a lot to happen so we will just see! haha

yeah, well right now im throwing about 130, and im a sophomore, im throwing about 40' in shot, but this is only my second year. And ive improved by 25 feet in the disk and 10 in the shot, and its not slowing down, ive already increased 3 feet this season

I agree with Tabor.
I think this thread is irrelevant, because while strength and size helps, I've seen many smaller guys launch it past guys that have 100-150 lbs. on them on the bench and 75-100 on them on the scales. In the finals at Nike Indoor's this year, I was, besides Trey Jordan, the tallest (I'm about 6'2 225 lbs.) and probably one of the strongest there. Those guys that beat us had the technique and the quickness. I've benched 365, but I can vouch I could still launch the disc and shot when I was at 300. It helps, but its not nearly as important as cleans, sprinting power, and technique.

I think the difference between benching 315 and say 395 will have a smaller effect on throwing. Personally, I only bench 185, and I am at a huge disadvantage...I've only thrown 46'1" and 146'3" thanks mainly to technique

He has the indoor record at 60'0 and the outdoor at 63'0.
I'm hitting 58's, 59's right now and I hope to be at about 62-ish by the state meet in about a month, so I think Sean can definitely get close. He has 2 or so months to do it. What's your goals for the disc this year?
NormanTigerTabor
04-30-2006, 10:03 PM
my goal is 180 but my best throw this year is 168 I have kinda had some trouble in disc
tabortiger
04-30-2006, 10:47 PM

alright but back to the bench topic. do you guys prefer dumbbells or the bar, and by the way 212!
tabortiger
05-03-2006, 08:42 PM
a little of both, but mostly bar. it seems hard sometimes to get those heavy dumbells up in position once you get past the 80-90 lb dumbells.

Throwing 212 in practice is great, but it wont mean anything unless you throw that in a meet.

He's already hit a 203? this year I believe. Cut him some slack.

my best in a meet this year is 199....and that was with a small tailwind....I've only had one good wind this year, and I threw 198 at that meet. My stand around (I call them half turns I guess that's what you mean) go anywhere from 160 to 180, but my best half turn ever is prolly like 185. did yall happen to catch cantwell's 72 footer last weekend? dang that was huge.
