Everytime i run the 3200, i negative split on the 2nd mile. my coach told me to go out faster in the first mile cause he knew i could. in my last race, i ran the first mile 10 seconds faster than my PR pace, and still negative split the second mile by 4 seconds. does this mean that i need to warm up more, or just go out harder on the first mile?
thanks.

id go out faster, cause if youre negative splitting then you can go faster. but i think its better you negative split by 4 seconds rather than dont and run like 20-30 seconds slower than your first mile

ok. but that's a good thing right? If your PR is a 10:30. Then if you go out 5:05 (10 seconds faster than PR pace) and then drop it another 4 then I'd be estatic. 10:06. A 24 second PR. Go out a little harder the first mile but not too much so that you hit your breaking point. And if it keeps working then keep going out a second or two (max for every race) harder and see what results it gives you.

the way my coach makes me run the 3200 is at the first race I just run it. Suppose I run 10:40 (80 sec 400's). Then the next race my coach will make me run 79 second 400's (10:32). Every race he just tries to get me to run once second faster per lap. Suppose the last race you ran 10:00 for the 3200 (75 sec 400's). Well next race, run 74's and so on until you find that you can't go any faster.

A kid on my team two years ago ran 5:28, 4:55.

In a cross country race this year I ran a 5K as a workout but it was a really small scrimmage meet and no one was running under 18 minutes so I was about 1 minute behind the leaders with a mile to go, decided I wanted to win and ran 4:58. My splits were 6:20, 12:40. Ran 18:13. Negative splitting = fun.
