It doesn't seem like this forum gets used a lot so I thought that for my first-ever post I'd write about a recent nation-leading throw...
Emily Pendleton (Jr., Woodmore) – 161' 6" – DT – US #1
I'm writing from New Jersey where this would probably beat our best competitor by 20' and it's just about 10' shy of our state record (172'2").
Is she new to throwing and just burst onto the scene or has she progressed naturally the last two years? Is her school known for cranking out good athletes or did they just get lucky with her?

Emily Pendleton is now at 168-0, who knows where she'll get by the end of her season. She isn't really "new" but her distances are a pretty big improvement. Last year and her freshman year she was consistently 140s and occasionally low 150s. I don't know too much about her school, she is coached by her dad. But yeah, she has had an amazing break out season!

If she's already up to 168, then I'm starting to wonder if she'll threaten the National record (188'4" Susy Powell 1994) next year!?!?!? It's always neat following someone who is creeping up on long-standing records.
She should do pretty well at the Nike Outdoor National meet and some of the post-season meets, if she goes. Last year's NON winner "only" threw 158'4"
Our school record is 119. Like yours, she could probably break ours with a guys disc!

Either she'll go really far next year, or she'll go 168'1". I got to know her at the John Powell Camp this past summer, and she's a really nice girl with a lot of talent. She's improved nearly 17 feet this year, which is nearly unheard of with top girls throwers. But from her freshman to sophomore year she only improved 2 inches. I'm glad to see her throw so far this year, and I hope she comes back to camp this year so she can improve even more.

Emily threw 172-8 this past week at the district championships here in Ohio. My sister threw in the same flight as she did. She broke her previous state record of 168 feet with the throw. She throws disc this evening at the regional championships at Fostoria High School. The ring at Fostoria is a fast ring and I think it is a lot smoother than Eastwood. She should be able to uncork another monster throw tonight if the conditions are right.
FYI her sister Erin is a freshman and threw 140' in the district meet. My sister (also a freshman) said that Erin had a couple hitches in her motion and if those get worked out she could throw 150 or so...should be interesting

Wow...that is a huge throw. Emily threw the weight 40-9 which isnt a terrible throw and her sister threw 38-6 as a freshman which isnt bad at all since I'm guessing their dad was the one coaching them

You're right Keller, to my knowledge her father is her coach. I've heard that there's another sister (Emily is the oldest of five girls) that is throwing over 100' in junior high..I was wrong, the girls threw shot put tonight at Fostoria. Winning throw was a Purdue recruit Stacey Wannemacher who threw 47-1!! NW Ohio is a hot-bed for girls throwing right now. Fifth place threw over 40', and this is in the smallest school division...it's pretty wild

and Emily put the shot 41' 5" for a third place at regionals and a trip to Columbus in that event. By the way, Emily was our state discus champion her freshman and sophomore years. If she wins this year and next...she will become the first woman in Ohio to win 4 state titles in any field event.

It sure sounds like a great time to be an athlete, coach, or lover of the throwing events in Ohio these days! There are a few girls in the mid-140's around here, but a 172-8 state record throw is something special. Our state record holder threw 172-2 in high school and now throws for UNC, which is arguably one of the best colllege throwing teams in the country. And, it sounds like her sisters are following suit right behind her. Imagine the "Pendelton Discus Relay" next year...

Woodmore's Pendleton qualifies for state
News Herald reports
Woodmore’s Emily Pendleton has won state in the discus the last two years.
The junior will head to Columbus for a third time after topping the former Division III regional record by almost 10 feet with a toss of 161-feet, 7-inches Friday. The old mark was 152-01.
And she added shot put to her state resume by finishing third with a throw of 41-05.
Freshman sister Erin will join her in the discus after a third-place finish (137-11).
(I believe that Emily now has the three longest high school throws this year)

COLUMBUS – There was absolutely nothing good about day one of the state track championships at Ohio State.
Unless your name is Emily Pendleton.
Pendleton, Woodmore High School’s fabulous “Queen of Fling” turned in another excellent day and won her third straight state title in the discus with a throw of 153-07. And she’s only a junior. Pendleton also stood on the podium with her sister Erin, a freshman who finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 123-10.

Even more impressive is her toss came in a driving rain with a headwind. It downpoured all day during the first day, so the girls threw shot and disc both in driving rain with wet implements...That says a lot about Emily's toss.

Here's an article from her local paper following her win this past weekend at Nike.

She beat her closest competitor by 11 feet and missed her personal best by 3 feet. Not bad for a someone who just finished their junior year in high school.

I talked to Emily tonight and she has her mind made up on where she is going to go to college next year...I won't give it away but she isn't going TOO far away from home.

I watched Emily throw tonight, and I want to say that I will be more surprised if she DOESN'T break Suzy Powell's record than if she does. She was throwing up a hill and hit about 15 feet up a tree tonight...I don't know the exact distances but on past estimations it would have gone VERY far. I'm not going to make a definite guess but I will say it would have got 2nd place at Nationals. SENIOR Nationals.

What was the distance she added to her throws just this past year? 24 feet? I'm curious to see if she can make another jump like that, or something close to that, in her distance next spring.
I hope she wasn't using her primary disc and using a practice one when she hit the tree. lol

She said 19 feet I believe. She is very under control and if she hits it hard at the front the thing will launch.
And I'm pretty sure she was using her sister's disc haha.

Emily verballed to the University of Michigan this past week. This comes as a surpise to a few people in our state that figured she'd go south as she had standing offers from almost all of the big time SEC/Big-12 schools to my understanding. But, she'll stay close to home at U of M and my guess is she'll throw in Beijing in 08
