I got to thinking that the NBA playoffs system takes way too long. They play 82 regular season games to elimante like only 2/3 of the league. The NHL is similiar, but they've spared us this year.

Does anybody else think that NBA and NHL playoffs take way too long and are far less entertaining than the NFL and MLB postseasons?

The NBA totally screwed up their playoff systems in their quest for more $$$$.

First round series' should revert to best-of-5.

They've also added time by changing where the games are played. Going 2-2-1-1-1 only adds travel time and extra days off. They should go back to the way things were "back in the day" and go 2-3-2.

edit:
The thing I always objected to about the NHL playoffs were the way they would reseed each round instead of keeping teams in brackets. It sucked to be, say, the #7 seed and upsetting the #2, and your reward is to get to play #1 in the next round.

The NFL system is the best because it is exclusive, but enough teams get there to make the end of the season interesting.

Half the NBA teams make the playoffs, which kind of ruins the point. Making the first series seven games was a ridiculously horrible idea.

The MLB playoffs are okay, but plenty of teams have about 40-60 games in there when they KNOW they aren't going to make the playoffs. That's got to suck for the players and the fans (I know this because I'm from Wisconsin).

I know virtually nothing about the NHL playoffs and don't really care to know anything about them.

Twelve of the 32 NFL teams make the playoffs, which is a good ratio. The games and one-and-done, kind of like the NCAA basketball tournament. The bye week rewards the teams who had the best regular seasons. I like that system. The NFL is in MUCH better shape than any of the other pro leagues.

I think the idea of the NHL concluding its season in June is kind of silly. Hockey, in June?

Doesn't your refrigerator/freezer work in June?

Baseball has the best system. They maintain the importance of divisions, by making it almost all about winning the divisions. And the regular season is so important because only 8 teams make it out of 30. Basketball and hockey cheapen the regular season, because half of the league gets into the playoffs anyway.

Also, in a 7-game playoff series, 2-2-1-1-1 is absurd. Basketball takes like 2 1/2 weeks to play each round. At most, they should play every other day.

I hope you're joking.

I voted NFL, even though I would say baseball is my favorite sport. The 2000 ALDS, 2003 ALCS, and 2004 ALCS were the greatest sports series I've ever witnessed. However, football's one and done plan is great. It makes each game more intense.

I totally forgot about the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The College World Series is also quite exciting.

i'm gona go with baseball here. Too many teams make the other playoffs. Baseball's nice because you get rid of bad teams and you're left with only 4 teams the NL and 4 from the AL. It works out good.

i think the football playoffs are ridiculous. the best teams dont' necessarily make it to the Super Bowl. when contesting for the title of best in the world, it really should be that, the best teams. not some teams that had a good day while another team had a bad day. on that note...

Patriots Rule!

MLS is even more inclusive. 8 of the 12 teams in the league make the playoffs (and before this year's expansion, it was 8 of 10!!).

NCAA hoops is a tournament, not playoffs.

Umm, the NBA playoffs are a tournament also, you just play to the best of 7.

Maybe I'm being too nit-picky, but here's my reasoning:

In the NBA playoffs, you earn your spot, and your seed based on your record. You have to qualify by being one of the top 8 in your conference.

The NCAA basketball tourney is like a tennis tournament in that it's one-and-done (and yes, I acknowledge that so is football) but that record or winning your conference has no bearing on your seeding. They even have a play-in game. Teams can get selected simply based on what conference they're in rather than how good they actually are. Except for certain conference champs, who get guaranteed spots, teams are chosen for the tourney; in playoffs, teams earn their way in by meeting certain standards.
