so me and my friend (both distance runners) are having an argument over whether or not the weight of a shot put varies in weight from profesional to college to high school

can anybody clear this up for us

Boys:
juniors (before 9th grade)- 8 lb.
frosh (9th and possibly 10th)- 10 lb.
varsity (high school)- 12 lb.
college (all classes)- 16lb.
professional/olympic (all ages)- 16 lb.

Girls: 8.8 (4kg) all levels, except junior (don't know that one)

I've never heard of any ages throwing a 10lb shot...and never in a HS meet.

California is a weird state : )

frosh/JV do throw 10 lb shots there

thanks everyone

but i did lose my bet :(

that doesnt make much sense why theyd be different, i mean in high school the hurdles are the same height and the track the same length, why are the shots different weight?

probably cause people get so much stronger and more exsplosive I guess.......

Going along the lines of that...my guess would be that since the original weight (used in the Olympics and NCAA) was so "heavy", they decided to lower the weight so younger aged kids would not get discouraged and/or injured throwing the heavier shot.

junior for girls is 8lbs.
hurdles change too for boys from high school to college they go 39" to 42" girls stay the same
