This is history in the making people. The development of the soon to be greatest of all time is a live public event.

Although she just reached voting age in a career so new it still smells like Enfamil....

Coming off last season when she ranked #1 in the world, Sanya last week eclipsed her world leading 400m time of 49.89 by running 49.82

And now THE BULLET (http://www.sanyarichards.net) is watching her speed game get cozy with her technique, strength and heart.

This Sunday she won the 200 in 22.25 as she pr'd for the second consecutive time in the event. Veronica Campbell pulled up and Torri Edwards finished second in 22.50.

Sanya is now only .14 away from matching the pr of the U.S. best 200m specialist, Allyson Felix (in far fewer attempts, I might add).

Sanya AT AGE 21 is one of only 9 women to EVER run a sub 49 400m and her pr of 48.92 is just flat disrespecting the A.R. of 48.83

The most versatile collegiate sprinter in US HISTORY who had no weakness or peer in her ability to punish people in every sprint event from 60m indoors to 400m in or out....has QUICKLY become the best 200/400 US sprinter since the days of Briscoe Hooks and then Gwen Torrence and without question one of the best EVER (again, at age 21). Not as many American women have gone faster than 22.25 as you might think, although several are active.

I believe Sanya's future impact on track and field could one day be as significant as that of any U.S. sprinter since FloJo.

Yes, that includes Jones/Ashford/Devers/Torrence.

Already being the second fastest American EVER in her event....says..."yes, she is that good."

People are justifiably talking about Wariner being the best since M.J.

Well, we may get to watch Sanya be more like MJ than even Wariner.

And that's become consistent force in BOTH the 200 and the 400.

I heard that VC was in trouble before she pulled up and Sanya was smooth as Huggy Bear.

Wow! Did not know she went sub 49!

I saw the 22.25 from the Gateshead results, she had a nice gap on second place there. I think that puts her #13 on the American womens list.

With hearing some athletes names for so many years, it's easy to forget how young some of them are. US sprinting teams are deep on both sides!

TD, good to see you posting my friend. We had a discussion about Ms. Richards, during the Oly04 season (I believe it was the "400m Thread", or something to that effect - that was a world class thread, extremely enlightening), predicting a 21.7x half lap in her career. There were very few that responded. And I was new to the board as well.

However, I will say again. If the preparation and desire is there, I see no reason for it not to happen. When? So much depends on your comment at that time - "when she wants it, she will get it". It would be nice to see her run this event at the nationals. She certainly had to be encouraged from the result at Gateshead.

Looking at the video, my impression goes like this: Ms. Richards made a strong pickup during the transition from the curve. It appeared Campbell attempted to respond prior to the spasm/strain. Though she might've challenged strong, my feeling is that the race would've gone to 190-195 with Ms. Richards the winner (biased...perhaps) between 190 or so and the finish.

Best of luck going for the BC position. And by the way, you have been missed!:D

Campbell would not have caught her. Vcamp can close but as of late her closing power has been eclisped by others. a few others. Marion got her in the 100 and it seems like sherone simpson has had her number all year long. Hopefully she decides to rest and prepare for european cup or she will have issues for the resto of the year. It's Nice to see Sanya back in the 200 hunt. She will be better than hooks and I am interested to see how fast she can be in the 200. Can she get as close as marion got to flo-jo's record? who knows? Oh and does anyone have a copy of that 200-400 meter list for the women with the point system. I am interested to see who falls where. I mean Jones is a sub 50, sub 22 runner, and richards is right on her tails and Im sure there are sevral people Im leaving out but I'd really like to know what that ranking looks like.

Aside from the east, the ones of note might be Torrence, Perec and Jackson.

Hey W.E., friend. It's good to hear your always graceful and enlightening perspective. I really missed you too. Sup Feign.

And just as you requested W.E.....

Did y'all see this as reported by Runner's Web?:

-The Gateshead race was won by American Sanya Richards, whose 22.25 performance knocked more than a quarter of a second from her previous personal best. After her world-leading 49.82 in the 400 meters at Oslo's Bislett Games on June 2, Richards indicated that if she ran well in Gateshead, she would pursue the 200/400 double at the U.S. national championships in Indianapolis later this month.-

Also in the report was that Campbell mat have suffered a muscle tear possibly ending her season.

Hey TD,

I have been watching her results and wondering if they would bring you out of retirement. Good to see your posts again.

So how fast can she run a 200 this year?

Ordinarily for a runner of her caliber you would not expect to see more than two PRs in a season in any one event. But that may not hold for her, since she probably has more unexplored upside than anyone else in her class at the distance. (Of course the group that constitutes "her class" is becoming very small).

I believe that if she runs it at Nationals, and conditions are right, we might see 22.1 in the semifinal. Anything faster, I don't know. That would be asking a lot of anyone, considering the season she has already had.

Would sure like to see her and Felix going at it, though.

Good point. Since she is listed in both events, Hart, who has some experience with this, has probably been laying out a specific protocol for some time...given her speed and strength qualities.

Actually, when I think about it, isn't this similar to what John Smith was doing for Perec in '96? In that period, I believe the women's 200m was at a similar class level.

Just watched Sanya win the Women's 400m in just over 49 seconds.
She carries so much speed into the finish!
It's really quite special.
Simply unreal!

Expected the outcome with Ms. Richards. Rather disappointed with Trotter and Henderson, however. Though this is a non-major championship year, I would think you need to compete at an equally high level to maintain consistency of performance. Richards, and to an equal extent, Lashinda Demus are certainly making a statement in this regard.

Perhaps they will avail themselves with improvement in the European circuit. Ms. Richards is certainly not waiting around for any traveling company from CONUS!

You got that right, but I think Sanya is just THAT good, what I mean by that is that she's had the tools for a while, but while in college she NEVER ran the 400m that well, she would literally haul a$$ for the first 300m's and then allow her strength to carry her to the finish line. Now that she has her rae mechanics in order, there is no stopping her. I think Tonique even knows that after she beat her running 48.92 at Zurich. I don't think we will see Sanya lose much any more unless its due to her own running mistakes.

There are no wind measurements in races 400m & up.

RK,

I understand that, but wind can still slow things down if it's strong enough. The wind at your back never seems to help as much as the wind in your face hurts. At least, I have never met a 400 or 800 runner who wouldn't prefer to run in totally calm conditions rather than in a wind.

According the results, 100H semis had winds of -.7 and -1.0. That was about 25 minutes before the women's 400 finals. Winds at .7 won't make a lot of difference, but if they were stronger, the 49.27 would've been that much more impressive. (Well, to me, anyway...)

CGBatch

Well I know they do take them cause I was able to find out last year when Rob ran the 800 at Jr. Nats in Carson last year that the wind was in the constant 2 m/s range because Miller said it was windy and the announcer had mentioned that during the race.

Well I know they do take them cause I was able to find out last year when Rob ran the 800 at Jr. Nats in Carson last year that the wind was in the constant 2 m/s range because Miller said it was windy and the announcer had mentioned that during the race. What I was trying to say that there are no "wind-aided" marks from 400m and up. That is not to say that there is mention from time to time about headwinds and tailwinds in those races, but the wind is not used in the results like it's done in the 100, 200 and the short hurdle races and the TJ and LJ in the field events.

Man...the best was still to come.

Her pr's are now 22.17 and 48.70 (AR).

What a champion.

Her plan is to be the best in the 100, 200 and the 400.

My money's on the Bullet.

But the only one who's clearly ahead of the field in anything is Sanya in the 400.

The 100 and the 200 is wide open.

100

Felix 11.04
Richards 11.32 (college) she ran 11.2x in the prelim I was there.

200

Felix 22.11
Sanya 22.17

400

Felix 50.54
Sanya 48.70
