i think it depends a lot on the amount pavement and concrete you race on. a lot of the courses i run on have a lot of hard surfaces, so it's not really beneficial to wear spikes

there are tons of threads on this, but since i am here...
spikes vs trainers- no contest, spikes make a huge difference
flats vs trainers- still no contest, flats are much better
flats vs spikes- closer, but spikes are still better in general. some people LOVE flats and always wear them in any race, and some will wear spikes if even half the course is concrete (i know both from my team). but for most people they will wear spikes unless there is multiple spots where you have to cross concrete/asphalt, then they will wear flats (on most spikes you can take the actual spikes out and put in blanks but i dont like that).
soooo, i would reccomend you get a good pair of spikes and a pair of flats (nike mayflys are cheap, light, and great but dont last) so you are prepared
