What do you define as "good"?

To go to an average D1 school, I'd say 48.XX and/or 1:56.XX or less.

To go to a "good" D1 school, I'd say 47.XX and/or 1:55.XX or less.

(These are just my opinions.)

Probably, your gonna have to put up some sick 400 or 800 times to even have US colleges look at you, let alone give you a scholarship and believe me you shouldnt be worrying about scholarships at all, until you at least crack 50 in the 400m or go sub 156 in the 800. I mean I read in another thread that right now your running a 58, even with a lot of training behind you it will be tough to drop 8 or more seconds. I ran a 54 as a freshman with little training behind me and have been able to bring it down to a 49.17 in two years with more serious training. Dropping seconds isnt that easy in the 400.

yea dropping tiem is very difficult if u dont train well..for example my freshman year i ran 55.xx splits and my times kept going up not down and my sophmore year my time drop to 54 with NO training or what so ever...u just gotta work hard at it if u want a scholarship!~

Yes, a 152 is a pretty nasty time even at a collegic level, im not sure if youd get a full ride but chances are youd get a lot of money. Im no 800 runner but im pretty sure that is a legit enough time for some sort of scholarship.

I agree, first break 50 sec then start worrying about scholarships. When i was a 7th grader i had a pr of 58.10 and when i got to 8th grade with not too much training i ran 55.09 getting down to 54.7 on splits and now im a rising soph my pr my fresh yr was 52.70, the faster the times the harder it is to shave seconds, bt i plan on running 47s and 48s consistently next yr (running xc in the fall for first time)

I think with proper training he could run a 50 or 51 within the next yr..as for scholarships id say at least 48 but down in the 46 mid range, u should be guarenteed some money..

I think 47, 48 range is a bit pushing it, by your junior or senior year maybe but that is too large of a drop from 52.70. My 400m progression went something like this 54.2 relay split freshman, 51.7 relay split sophmore and then i finally started running open 400s this year breaking 49.5, 3 out of the four times i ran it with a PR of 49.17 automatic. I say a 3 second drop is reasonable but a 4-5 second drop is insane even with major training behind you. but a 52.70 for a freshman is pretty legit keep up the good times.

thanks, i dunno though, i played football in the fall and i broke my ankle missing the indoor season. I think that effected my time alot cuz i was running consistent 54s and 55s till around mid april because i was still getting into shape then i started running the 53s and 52s especially into june during usatf. I think with xc, indoor, then outdoor i could have run around 51 high, possibly 51 low-50 high on splits then have a better chance running 47s and 48s next yr..

one more thing, what kind of times do u think ppl like JT sheureman sp* and bryshon nellum ran during their freshman yr?? i know bryshon got second at state last yr (his soph yr) he ran like a 47.3, and i dunno about JT i just kno he runs around 46.2-4...can anyone elaborate on that? thanks

I think the most important thing to do if you want such an improvement is to not take any seasons off and try to accumulate your fitness level from season to season. I played soccer and ran outdoor track for all 4 years of high school. Finally my senior year I did indoor and it allowed me to keep my fitness from soccer, and I dropped almost 3 seconds off my 400 down to a 47.5 split from my junior to senior years. XC is not particularly beneficial for 400s in terms of getting faster, but it will definately provide you with some good base training to work off of for indoor and outdoor.

PS: Try the 800

for the 800m i think you have to get down to atleast the 1:53s to get a decent amount of money from D1 schools.
