After 4 months of weeks off running and then a couple days back on I've finally been diagnosed with IT Band Friction Syndrome. The only problem is the pain is behind my knee not on the outside of it. Anyone here who has this in their past know if you can get over this and move on, and if so whatd you do?

Wait whoa whoa there...your IT band doesn't go behind your knee. I could understand your IT band being tight and throwing something else out of alignment, but I don't see how that pain would be ITBS. Unless of course IT Band Friction Syndrome is different than just IT Band Syndrome.

I know I had ITBS and my physical therapist said it was a lucky (in a way) injury in the sense that I could continue to run on it granted I could make it past the pain. The problem is that the pain is near crippling sometimes.

just ice and stretch your IT band a lot.....like whenever you can. It's annoying, but that's how I got past my ITBS.

To cure my ITBS I did a lot of stretching my hip. Just placing one hand on a wall and crossing the injured leg's foot over the other foot, then jutting the hip out. Holding that for 30+ seconds 5 times a day is what I did. You also have to ice, and rolling a tennis ball (or in my case, a lacrosse ball because it's harder) across the outside of your thigh helps.

Also, take Advil (I think that anyway) or just generic neproxin sodium pills like I did. Advil is the stronger dose. It's an anti-inflamatory that will help it go away faster. I experienced notable improvements in the pain after taking it.

I've been doing most of the things everyone on here has said for the past four months. It is really irritating because it wont go away. I went to a sports doctor and he said it is either IT Band Friction Syndrome, Popletius Muscle Tendonitus, or Lateral Cartilage Tear. I had an MRI done and it ruled out the Lateral Cartilage Tear, and based on my pan and symptoms he diagnosed it as ITB Friction Syndrome (it is different the ITBS, i am pretty sure on that at least), I have been foam rolling 3 times a day, and icing 3 times a day. I'll add all the IT stretches. Thanks for all the help guys!

My doctor said I should be able to get back to dry land running by august 14 (first day of xc practice). Maybe not 60 mpw but like 25 a week with some cross training.

I've had it the past 2 and a half weeks and if I'm doing a hard tempo I can't go more than 2 miles and then it's just too painful to keep going. I've been doing the elliptical alot and I've managed to salvage some of my fitness. But it's a real tough injury to get through. I've been taking Advil every day as well as stretching, icing, and massaging it all the time. I can sort of run though it though I usually have to cross train after a hard day b/c it's too painful to run.

Here's a good site that may help-

I was just out with this for 5 weeks. Ice, stretch, use a foam roller, and take some aspirin to reduce the swelling. Also, if you can, see a physical therapist.
