Our school (Washington) is getting a brand new track next year! But right now we have to travel school to school in order to use a facility. :( I hope we have league finals there.

okay guys to get some arguments started what is the best league right now in terms of distance guys in ncs?
What happened to HAAL guys? Used to be quite good each year, but I haven't seen much from them lately.

umm...Ben G from O'Dowd, Mauracio H form Hayward, Tony Q from Moreau...if you haven't heard much yet, you should come very soon...and thats just top 3, not to mention the supporting Moreau cast who's liable to do anything, a strong BOD guys crew, a strong Castro Valley mid-distance crew when at full strength...HAAL will be represented well when the time comes.

What have these guys run? Anything sub 9:20, sub 4:20, sub 1:55? HAAL has traditionally had at least one standout each year (Leal from Arroyo, Beau from CV, Lanese from MC)...is there one this year?

that guy from deer valley? looks pretty good. I also heard schmitt might go in the 800. Other than that, most of the talent is in the 16 and the 32.

"That guy" you are refering to is probably Clinton Hayes. I used to run with him and he is a strong opponent, or if not now you better watch out, because he will tear it up!

And that's not saying much.
Carey Matthews who placed 3rd at State in the 1600m for DLS is gone, so is Nick Brennan and Richard Carrick of Campo, along with Nick Sears of Northgate. Doesn't leave a whole lot left . . . And don't even get me started in the field events!
Believe it or not, 5-10 won the DFAL high jump last year!

It's a TOTAL NO BRAINER . . . JAMES LOGAN!!!
Props to super Logan junior, Kristina Davis who ran a State leading 11.67 yesterday up in Sacramento. Looks like she backed-up that 11.80 at the Stanford Invite BIG TIME!!!
The World is her oyster!
:p
top four go to state, so i have ghebray, schmidt, vizcaino, and then the 4th spot seems like a toss up... plenty of guys in the 9:30s
nbxc1228
05-01-2005, 11:21 PM
i agree with your first three picks in the two mile but for the fourth spot you have to consider John Figuerido of Arcata who has run 9:17 this year. Also Mark Ceraldi from piedmont, if he runs the 3200 could be up there in the top four.
nbxc1228
05-01-2005, 11:24 PM
Figuerido's time was acctually 9:14 at Arcadia sorry about the mistake
oh yeah i totally forgot about fig... he'll definitely be up there as long as he stays healthy. 9:14 is cooking.

C'mon people, don't leave the good stuff for just the 1600 and the 3200. Let's get some predictions for the 800 at MOC.
I think the top 3 spots are already taken. You got Clinton Hayes (JR, Deer Valley), Cameron Crivello (SR, Concord), and Mike Wickman (SR, Northgate). Anyone agree/disagree?

ok i have averaged a top 8 count or so for the girls and a top 10 for the guys, the girls was gleaned from recent NCS meets and the CIF STATE lists, i think that will suffice because not many of the ppl who read these boards are girls from NCS and be that as it may if i am mistaken please state a complaint here if you require a deeper analysis of the top women of NCS. Men will be updated within the hour and sent into rich this evening.

Hey Laz, I just want to take a moment to once again commend you on a GREAT job!
Don't worry about the Benicia thing; believe it or not they were once a part of the DFAL back in 2000.
Once again, thanks for all of the hard work!
I'm pretty sure that Clinton Hayes JR (Deer Valley) went 1:54.27 at Sacramento MOC, and Cameron Crivello SR (Concord) went 1:55.99 at Sacramento MOC. Don't count them out.

Should be a great race come Tri-Valley NCS with Wickman of Northgate, Hayes of Deer Valley, and Crivello of Concord.

also i was talking w/ Logans Coach Ward and he expressed his displeasure of the absense of NCS top times, well have no fear NCS coaches, this athlete despite the fact that he is a student, and a fan, has those posted. And this athlete doesnt understand why the top times submitted by a coach are any better than his.

They are a part of the San Joaquin Section.
By the way, you can also fill-in some of the marks ( especially those in the field events ) via the start/seed list for NCS MOC posted on Dyestat:

The two most obvious NCS Records that could potentially fall this coming weekend in Berkeley are:
Maggie Van Zeeland of Acalanes, 5-11 HJ from 1981
(Mindy Wiley of Sonoma Valley High is at 5-10.5)
Kevin Craddock of James Logan, 35.93 300m hurdles from 2004
(David Klech of Cal High is at 36.00 hand-timed).

in the 1600 but she purposely came up short in the 3200 to let a runner from another school take the 4th and final spot. As she and Lexi Pappas were both about to over take the 3rd place runner about 10 yards from the finish line, Ari suddenly slow down so as to not to overtake the eventually 4th place finisher. Great sportmenship on her part.

I saw that too, but it was kind of confusing because the girl from Mendecino, Tamma Carleton looked as if she thought she was crossing the finish line 10 meters short of the REAL finish line. Both of the O'Dowd runners had to "split" her, one to the inside of her in Lane #1, and one to the outside of her in Lane #3.
Hats off to Gabi-Rios-Sotelo. ;)

Yes, i was impress with her. i think this is the first time she beat Nicole this year. Gabi looks like she had a lot left, especially in the 3200. She has been a hot runner in the last month or so. i look forward to seeing her at Cal in the fall.
The 4th place runner might have miss judge the finish line but I think she was was out of gas and Ari could had passed her (IMO).

Maria Carrillo is most likely going to be moved to D2 as XCdude24 said, though it is not 100% certain. Look for them to take top team honors with the Carrillo Trio of Michael Brew, Logan Ensign, and Ryan Aldridge leading They all with very realistic shots at top 5 finishes.

Yeah, they said that Toeaina of Pittsburg would have had a throw of close to 170 feet if the wind hadn't killed her winning throw of 158-03.
As for Kristina Davis, my heart really goes out to her.
She's been running so strong all season long, from 11.80 at the Stanford Invite to 11.58 in the prelims.
I think that she could have gone under 11.50 today with the wind.
Can you imagine waking-up as the favorite for both the 100/200m dashes only to false start in the 100 and pull your hammy in the 200?
Wow.

Tom Cox (De La Salle) - 2nd
Chris Simpson (Monte Vista) - 3rd
Alex Harkins (De La Salle) - 4th
Clinton Hayes (Deer Valley) - 6th
there is going to be some serious competition for D1 this year and i think the predictions should be well thought out. now for the girls ... this is going to be a huge surprise i think. you never know whos going to come out on top in the girls race.

A recent change in division has left the D-2 NCS champ Ryan Lewis strewn amongst the ranks of the D-1 runners. Lewis is a front-runner and has a 9:36 3200 PR and definitely be a force to reckon with.
Care to clue us in on the situation here? According to the CBEDs, YV has an enrollment of 1503 which barely puts it in D2 and more than 500 kids shy of D1.

Hayward Area Athletic League
2005 Cross Country Preview
Girls’ Preview
Arroyo
NCS Division II
Coach: Sue Guinne
2004 -- 3rd HAAL, 5th NCS D-II
Even with State Meet veteran Jessica Scalzo graduating, the Dons look good with All-HAAL runners junior Ashley Chan and senior Yu-Mee Leal returning as front-runners. Chan (11:43 - 3200) and Leal (5:25-1600) also had solid track credentials. Frosh-Soph HAAL champ Lacey Bockhaus will definitely help. Lacey ran a 2:24 800 in track to qualify for NCS. With any depth at all, Arroyo will be strong league contender behind Bishop O’Dowd. They are currently ranked #3 in NCS D-II.
Bishop O’Dowd
NCS Division III
Coach: Dave Hubble
2004 -- 1st HAAL, 1st NCS D-IV, 2nd State D-IV
The Dragons return all of their top 5 and that should be enough to scare lots of other teams. With defending State Meet champion senior Ariel Wright (and 5th in the 1600 in track) and teammate sophomore Alexi Pappas (3rd State Meet) at the front, Bishop O’Dowd is imposing enough. Toss in sophomore Brazile Clark who had a great freshman track season (2:16 - 800) along with veteran juniors Melissa Yee and Elizabeth Hendrix (both All-HAAL and All-NCS) and you have the recipe for a remarkable season.
Already ranked #1 in NCS for D-III and 7th overall (regardless of division) in California, expectations are very very high for this group if they can stay healthy and injury-free.
Castro Valley
NCS Division I
Coach: Peter Brewer
2004 -- 2nd HAAL, 1st NCS Division D-I, 20th State D-I
The Trojans return all of their top runners from a good team last year. With most of their top runners freshmen last year, the future looks pretty bright. All-HAAL sophomore Karlina Beringer is the proven front-runner, but has plenty of company in All-NCS sophomore Kaitlin Santisteban who also ran a 5:28-1600/12:17-3200 double for Castro Valley in track. Sophomore Karen Chan who was the frosh-soph track double winner (5:35-1600/12:27-3200) is another strong part of the picture.
Castro Valley is also relying on its large team to supply depth to its 2005 aspirations. They currently are ranked #2 in NCS D-I.
Hayward
NCS Division I
Coach: Will Matthews
2004 -- 5th HAAL, 17th NCS D-II
The Farmers are losing but one senior from a talented but inconsistent squad. The team leaders will most likely be senior Amy Minor who was the most consistent performer last year, and sophomore Alem Habtay who emerged as the #1 runner at the NCS meet at the end of the season.
With this many veterans, the team has the experience to be a solid contender.
Moreau Catholic
NCS Division IV
Coach: Phil Wilder
2004 -- 4th HAAL, 4th NCS D-IV, 20th State D-IV
Last year’s appearance was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners, capping off a year of season-long improvement. This year’s version may find it a bit harder to repeat, but will try behind returning front running juniors Amy Recuero and Erin Maravilla. With a huge team (100+ total runners) to draw depth from, and a wily coach, the Mariners will be in the thick of it. They are #2 in the pre-season NCS D-IV rankings.
Mt. Eden
NCS Division I
Coaches: Walter Truesdale and Tommy Baker
2004 -- Mt. Eden did not field a full varsity girls’ team last year.
With only a few girls in the program last year, it will be hard for the new coaches to get a whole team up and going. However, the coaches are upbeat and optimistic about getting kids out so we shall see.
San Leandro
NCS Division I
Coach: no coach yet
2004 -- San Leandro did not field a varsity girls’ team last year.
Without a coach, it will very hard to get a team together.
San Lorenzo
NCS Division II
Coach: Justin Coffeen
2004: San Lorenzo did not field a full varsity girls’ team last year.
This is the 2nd year that San Lorenzo has even had a cross country program after a several-year hiatus. 2nd year coach Coffeen is looking to have a larger team than last year and eventually be able to field a full girls' squad.
Tennyson
NCS Division I
Coach: Tamara ____________
2004: HAAL no team; 24th NCS D-II
Amanda Montoya is the returning veteran for the Lancers, running 7th in the Frosh-Soph HAAL race and leading the team in the NCS race. The team has had difficulty getting a full team together in recent years, so last year’s performance is hopefully an encouraging sign.
Predicted 2005 finish:
1. Bishop O’Dowd -- It will be hard to imagine any NCS team coming close to this squad this year. Loaded to the maximum, the Dragons are the best team the HAAL had ever seen.
2. Castro Valley -- the Trojans are a very good team this year, but will be overshadowed by Bishop O’Dowd.
3. Arroyo -- The Dons a good team and with a little help could make a serious post-season statement.
4. Moreau Catholic -- the Mariners have legendary depth and a great coach. They also benefit from remaining in Division IV, even after the NCS realignment of enrollment figures.
5. Hayward -- the Farmers could be much better this year if the team competes to its potential.
6. Tennyson -- putting together a complete team is the key here.
no ranking -- San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Mt. Eden -- these teams struggle to attract enough girls to field a full team.
Boys’ Preview
Arroyo
2004 -- 8th HAAL, 21st NCS D-II
The Dons will on a youth movement this year, with their top runners all moving up from last year’s frosh-soph. Junior Andrew Tibbits and sophomores Martin Miller and Rick Medeiros are the trio Arroyo will be relying on. Tibbits posted a noteworthy 4:37 1600 in winning the HAAL frosh-soph race in track.
Bishop O’Dowd
2004 -- 2nd HAAL, 3rd NCS D-IV, 14th State D-IV
Senior Ben Gutierrez as defending NCS D-IV champion is the clear team leader. He has the talents of All-HAAL senior Dan Schieffer to back him up, as well as juniors Austen Dilberto and Pat Harkins. Gutierrez (4:26/9:43), Schieffer (4:38/10:34), and Dilberto (4:46/10:30) all had very good track times as well. With all of their top runners returning, the Dragons enjoy a #4 pre-season NCS D-III ranking.
Castro Valley
2004 -- 3rd HAAL, 3rd NCS D-I
With 3 seniors graduating from the top 7, the Trojans are relying on a very young team to fuel their 2005 ambitions. Junior Matt Riley (14th HAAL, 25th NCS)is the team leader, but will be followed by sophomore Mike Langella (18th HAAL, 17th NCS). A large and yet untested group of younger aspirants from last years’ JV and frosh-soph HAAL championship teams form the talent pool for this year.
Hayward
2004 -- 4th HAAL, 16th NCS Division II
The Farmers boast senior Mauricio Hurtado, defending HAAL cross country and 800/1600 track champion. He is a force unto himself. Behind him seniors Kyle Delauro and Francisco Paulido provide the support the team needs to move up in the HAAL ranks.
Moreau Catholic
2004 -- 1st HAAL, 1st NCS D-IV, 7th State D-IV
The Mariners enjoyed a great season in 2004, but the senior-laden team has departed leaving senior Marcus Cordero as the lone veteran. Even in a rebuilding year, the mythic proportions of the Moreau depth will be in good stead here and the Mariners will not be in a down mode for long.
Mt. Eden
2004 -- 6th HAAL
Mt. Eden enjoyed a competitive season last year, and brings back their most of their squad. They will be relying on the experience of senior Schuyler Hall (15th HAAL) and junior Alex Kifle (19th HAAL). They will be assisted by track discoveries sophomore Mister Holliman (4:46 - 1600) and Carrick Sims (2:06 - 800). The new coaches will have some good material to work with for 2005.
San Leandro
2004 -- 9th HAAL, 14th NCS D-I
Junior Owen Wesson, the 2003 HAAL Frosh-Soph champ, slumped through the 2004 campaign but appeared to be back on pace during a successful track season (4:48 - 1600, 2:07 - 800). However, the cupboard appears to be a bit bare after him. The Pirates will have to work hard to be competitive.
San Lorenzo
2004 -- 7th HAAL, 12th NCS D-III
Senior Nery Carranza and junior Javier Gonzalez are the front runners for the Rebels. With a season’s experience under their belts as San Lorenzo is back after a prolonged absence from the cross country scene, they lead a young squad.
Tennyson
2004 -- 5th HAAL, 19th NCS D-II
Tennyson is on a rebuilding movement, starting with junior Hoanh Le and senior Fermin Lopez. The Lancers have some work to do, as the rest of their squad thins out quickly after that.
Predicted 2005 finish
1 Bishop O’Dowd -- having Ben Gutierrez helps a lot, and having good backup helps even more. The Dragons will be hard to stop this year.
2. Castro Valley -- If the Trojans can get the young squad to jell early, they might just give Bishop O’Dowd a challenge.
3 Hayward -- HAAL champion Mauricio Hurtado is the power this year. If the veterans behind him stay close, the Farmers will be strong.
4. Moreau Catholic -- Marcus Cordero will need lots of immediate improvement from the Mariner horde to help him out this year.
5. Arroyo -- This group of young guys could be a real surprise this year.
6. Mt. Eden -- There is some real talent on this squad. The new coaches could find themselves with a surprise squad this year.
7. San Lorenzo -- steady improvement is the word this year.
8. San Leandro -- hopefully Owen Wesson can get a team to back him up.
9. Tennyson -- there is a lot of work to be done here.

CROSS-COUNTRY PREVIEW
Good friends, Running rivals
Mitch Stephens, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 14, 2005
Her first name is Maureen, but everyone calls her Mo.
"They've been calling me that since the first grade," Acalanes senior cross-country runner Mo Huber said. "It just kind of fits my personality."
Getting fit was Huber's biggest goal during the summer, after getting strep throat at the end of the 2004 season. It led to a disappointing -- for her, anyway -- sixth-place finish in the state Division III race at Woodward Park in Fresno.
"It wasn't very good timing," Huber said.
Her timing was superb in Saturday's 2005 debut at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, as she easily won the 21st-annual Ed Sias Invitational.
Her 2-mile time of 12 minutes, 21.8 seconds was well ahead of defending state Division V champion Katie Fritzke of Mount Shasta (12:32.2).
"I guess the extra work in the summer paid off," Huber said. "I felt strong from the get-go."
She attended a running camp in Colorado and, when she got back, made the bold move to train with Acalanes' boys team, which is the favorite to win the always stout Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship.
Huber said it was a little awkward at first, but her three-week stint with the boys obviously has paid dividends.
"I was a little worried how the girls on the team would respond, but I think they understand I'm just trying to get faster," she said. "We'll still have time to practice and bond."
Huber has a strong bond with arguably the Bay Area's top returning female runner, Ariel Wright of Bishop O'Dowd.
The defending state Division IV champion and Huber first met as 5-year-olds playing soccer in Oakland.
Both eventually gave up the game -- "That was one of the hardest things I ever had to do," Huber said -- and became two of the Bay Area's top runners.
So when O'Dowd, the defending state D-4 champion, moved up this season to D-3, it created some uneasiness between the two friends. After all, they might be racing for the same individual state crown.
"I try not to think about it," Huber said. "We both try to avoid the subject."
Wright, fighting through some offseason injuries, was in street clothes Saturday cheering on Huber, who a week into her freshman year, transferred from O'Dowd to Acalanes, closer to where her father had accepted a job.
"When I transferred, we didn't stay in touch as much," Huber said. "But now we're closer than ever. Running has really brought us together."
Briefly: Although College Park's girls are No. 3 in the state (D-1), coach Chuck Woolridge said the Falcons might not be worthy at this point: "I'm not sure if our summer training warrants the ranking," he said. The 2004 state D-2 champions return their entire squad, but they've moved up in classification. "We have good talent, and I'm confident we'll do the work," Woolridge said. ... De La Salle, the top boys team, made an impressive debut at Ed Sias, taking the large-school division by 35 points thanks to second-, third- and fourth-place performances by Tom Cox, Brendan Scanton and Alex Harkins, respectively. ... St. Ignatius freshman Katy Daly made quite a debut Saturday, tying the North Monterey County course record set by current UCLA freshman Ciara Viehweg. She's rated the state's second-best freshman by www.dyestate.com.

SMB also showed well especially for a d-4 school with 3 guys under 17min. It all looks to be very excting at NCS.

One of you guys on here has a tag that says your 3 mile p.r. is 16:18 and your 2 mile is 10:54. if you ran a 16:18 you probably ran 2 miles faster than 10:54 considering that 10:54 is 5:27 pace and 16:18 is 5:26 pace. I mean, just sayin. your 2 mile p.r. could move up 2 seconds.

But it's got a TON of depth(boys divsion 3: san rafael, tam, miramonte, acalanes, campo among others) and a lot of rising talent(petaluma)

Its Mt Sac time again, there are HUNDREDS of races, ok not hundreds, but too many that gleaning through ALL of the results will be too labor intensive. Thus if yall want October rankings before the NCS program, i implore all coaches and all atheltes who read these forums representing NCS schools. EMAIL me your results from Mt Sac so i can work that into the rankings otherwise october will consist of the clovis invite mariner invite and a few league matches
