Roosevelt opened their season in the Don Baker Memorial USD meet, without the Eckert twins in the race they pull off the perfect 15 here regardless. All scorers sub-16 if you place the Eckerts at the front. Their boys go a solid 1-2-3-5-7 but with a 2:20+ time spread behind Kogel. The Roosevelt squad has their transfer athlete, Seanna Kautz, a freshman, taking second here- she was 10th in the SD Class A state meet last fall for Tri-Valley. Roosevelt does present a formidable squad and should be considered the favorite going in to the Griak, barring any top national surprise entries.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader has a sketchy report on this meet where the SF Roosevelt girls raced and won, looks like they may have rested Krista Eckert. When the Huron Plainsman updates their site to cover this I'll add what they have to this post.

In South Dakota the Eastern SD conference meet features the Yankton boys stepping forward to take the title 40-63 over Pierre with Yankton’s Brad Anderson in 17:03, a sec ahead of Pierre’s Alec Espeland; in the 4k its Yankton 18, 60+ points over the field, with all scorers across by 15:02, led by Betsy Bies’ win in 14:16.
http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/99999999/SPORTS/50111003

And the Argus Leader also carried a good feature already on the upcoming SD state meet, the only event this SD xc season where Roosevelt and Yankton will go head to head in-state, coming up very soon on the 21st.

I thought the top boys times seemed slow at the ESD Conference meet above when compared to the top 4k efforts; here's what a follow-up article had to say about wrong turns and the four runners up front:

"Oops - a wrong turn sent the leaders of the ESD cross country race astray for nearly a half mile Saturday in the conference meet in Mitchell.

By the time the error was discovered, the four runners had to make double-time to get back on course and try to regain their lead.

Fortunately for Yankton's Brad Anderson, he was able to kick in the after-burners and just nip Alec Espeland of Pierre by one second at the finish line. His winning time was 17:03.

The other three weren't as fortunate.

Greg Beesley of Brandon Valley finished eighth in 17:14, Cole Lemke of Aberdeen Central was 13th in 17:36 and Travis Fitzke of Pierre finished out of the top 15 medal winners."

Haven't seen a thing on it. Got details?

Edit- ok, found something. The Eckerts were off on a college recruiting visit and the team ran without them. No real deep details in the feature, though.

The South Dakota State Meet is Saturday in Huron SD, on the Broadland Creek Golf Course- good luck to all in this one, one of the finest matchups around the country in terms of both ind & teams in the girls race, particularly when the population of this state is considered.

Here are the pages where I'd expect results to appear, and the SDHSAA was notorious for not publicly archiving complete stuff from prior years, but now they've got an archives link at the bottom that takes you back to '01. When drawing comparisons be aware that the location of the SD state meet rotates and you have to look back to '02 or '04 to find the meet on this Huron course. Also be aware that AA all 17 teams in the state qualify, the field of large-school teams sees no section/district paring of the field.

Going with 18th place as the snapshot benchmark in a field of around 105-110 for some comparisons to the past here:

'01 (Rapid City)
18th place 16:44.47
1. Watertown 85 pts in 16:40.77 / -4

'02 (Huron) Today's champ was running as an 8th grader for O'Gorman here, taking second behind Yankton's stellar soph, Kavan.
18th place 16:42.02
1. Rapid City Stevens 69 pts in 16:29.85 / -12
2. Yankton 72 pts in 16:25.95 / -16
3. O'Gorman 83 pts in 16:25.04 / -17

'03 (Huron)
18th place 16:25.75
1. Yankton 44 pts in 15:54.21 / -32
2. Rapid City Stevens 50 pts in 16:08.71 / -17

'04 (Huron)
18th place 16:40.38
1. Yankton 56 pts in 16:05.30 / -35
2. Sioux Falls Roosevelt 60 pts in 16:14.16 / -26
3. Rapid City Stevens 69 pts in 16:29.48 / -11

'05 (Rapid City)
18th place 15:59.60
1. Yankton 34 pts in 15:26.34 / -33
2. Sioux Falls Roosevelt 53 pts in 15:40.60 / -19

'06 (Huron)
18th place 16:02.29
1. Yankton 33 pts in 15:14.80 / -47
2. Sioux Falls Roosevelt 55 pts in 15:30.40 / -32

I would conclude that the Yankton race today stands head and shoulders superior to their stuff the last 3 years, and the Roosevelt race is right on par with the level Yankton has shown '03-'05.

1. Rapid City Stevens 70 pts in 16:45.07 / -15

'03 (Huron)
18th place 16:59.94
1. Rapid City Stevens 86 pts in 16:54.64 / -5

'04 (Huron)
18th place 17:28.96
1. Rapid City Stevens 44 pts in 17:05.46 / -23.5

'05 (Rapid City)
18th place 16:49.70
1. Yankton 46 pts in 16:27.66 / -22
2. Rapid City Stevens 76 pts in 16:37.14 / -13

'06 (Huron)
18th place 16:29.31
1. Yankton 86 16:25.80 / -4.5

One of the weaker championship efforts in this time frame but nevertheless a great season for a team that faced some major rebuilding to surpass the competition.

Was the course the same as past years in Hurron? I heard the AA boys lead pack hit the mile in arround 4:35, and 15:20s in that wind is an impressive time. If it is legit those boys are going to tear it up on the track this spring.

The Argus Leader links in post #28 above are no good anymore; this is a paper that apparently doesn't attach web addresses permanently to the articles and it simply brings up a more recent sports article now. But for whatever its worth, the article did mention that while on the same golf course, the layout this year was different. How that may have affected times, if at all, I have no idea.

First news I've seen on the Yankton program- in the USD indoor facility in Vermillion for the Norm Herren Midwest Track & Field Invite on 3/24. Mostly SD schools with some participation from NE & MN schools as well, complete results:
http://www.usdcoyotes.com/releases/attachments/200732416144119223658105-1.htm

The winning effort in the B-HJ is a US#1 hs indoor height on the year, not likely to get surpassed since all states are about wrapped up w/indoor soon.

The DakotaDome in Vermillion was again alive w/hs action Monday (and will be today as well as smaller schools go at it in this meet) for this event, complete results:
http://www.usdcoyotes.com/releases/attachments/2007326208019223658105-1.htm

Again there is some Nebraska and Minnesota participation but primarily South Dakota schools here. Meet records are not noted in these results but for the record Betsy Bies broke her own '06 record here by almost 9 seconds in the 3200; the 4x400 relay record was broken by Sioux Falls Roosevelt (Megan Bren, Ellen Hargens, Krista Eckert, Allison Eckert), by fractions, it had stood since 1984 (Omaha Central NE); a new meet record in the boys 4x400 as well for Omaha Benson NE (Willie White, Jared Hall, Kyle Estwick, Jaron Hall) 3:31.06 breaking the 1982 SF Washington time by over a sec and a half; lastly a new HJ meet record by fractions for Sidney NE's Paul Hamilton, clearing the bar at 6'-9.

The Sioux Falls Argus-Leader has the documentation on those record efforts in their write-up, and notes that meet MVP honors went to Yankton's Bies and SFR's Bill Kogel who won both the 1600 & 3200 in solid indoor times.

Today's Sioux Falls Argus Leader carries a good preview on the special events this year which will be the boys 200 & the girls 800, they've assembled a great field in that 800 with the Eckert twins, both with 2:11 credentials, Laura Roesler from Fargo ND with the same, and Minnesota adds Nikki Swenson who competed at state here in the 800/1600 double last year, and just missed going sub-2:12 as well and won in 2:12.08-

Impressive field in the girls 800. How good is this Laura Roesler......her times at that age are as good as it gets. Too bad the Drake Relays are the same dates, it would be interesting to see the Dinsdale Twins from Iowa compete with the Eckert twins.....

Her 2:11 came last spring as an 8th grader in a race where Elizabeth Yetzer essentially led and paced her through 700; Laura then took off with her sub-56 400 speed and put away the win. This year she was about a sec off that as she won by over 10 seconds in the same meet, she's good, she's fast- 25.x, 55.x. And she's one of ND's top 4k xc runners as well in the fall.

I agree on the Dinsdale twins- though the meets are a week apart, not the same weekend- the great Howard Wood event, as good as it is, is missing one more set of twins in order to really have gathered the best at that distance from this region.

I took a peek into the Yankton paper to see what their programs were up to this past weekend or yesterday; didn't run across anything on them but did find some pretty prominent stuff going on in what I assume is smaller class action.

Lennox hosted a meet yesterday, they have a LJ'er winning the event in 23'-11.5 if that's no misprint (it may be a misprint- Jared competed at state last year but didn't make 20')- Jared Vlastuin.

In Bonesteel SD yesterday, Gregory HS has a young lady taking four impressive wins sprinting and hurdling, Alexa Duling 12.50/26.90/58.90 sprints & 15.60 100h, the hurdle win noted as a meet record in this scoreboard feature.

Both are juniors this year.

Today's Sioux Falls Argus Leader online sportspage is thoroughly dominated with coverage of the Day 1 action here, note that there are some discrepencies between what's reported in some of the features and the actual results available on the meet website or the newspaper's scoreboard- I notice the features are awarding Ms Brost greater height in her PV win and Mr Hancock a faster time in his 200m win than what the meet site or the scoreboard feature, which agree with one another, are awarding. All of the features contain links to the newspaper's photo galleries in the 'related items' links.

I'm not finding thorough results on this one but the Rapid City article and the Sioux Falls article both note that Sturgis' Jessica Engel ran a very good 800/1600 double 2:16.90/5:02.62 to edge Krista Eckert in both races.

Allison Eckert lowered her own meet record here by 10 sec, winning the 3200 in 11:03.19

SFR's Bill Kogel was a double winner 1600/3200 but the features shed no light on his winning times.

Teamwise it was a Rapid City affair as the Central boys & Stevens girls took the team titles.

It all happens this upcoming friday and saturday, 5/25-5/26. For the day one action the 3 classes are split among three locations, AA in Brandon, A in Lennox, and B in Sioux Falls. On day 2 everybody converges on Sioux Falls together. South Dakota has state q standards that can be achieved all season long; in addition the smaller classes have held regionals where the top 2 placers advance regardless of time/distance. In the large class all sixteen schools put relays on the line at state, with prelim heat/lane assignment determined by seedings; day 1 prelims pare the field of entries in the 4x100, 4x200 & 4x400 for the saturday finals; the 4x800 is done as a final in separate heats on friday, and a medley relay done in separate finals heats on saturday. Field event finals are split between the 2 days, and besides the 4x800 the other track finals that occur on day 1 are the 800 and the 3200. Judging by the dates of the latest updates the AA q lists should be complete, though it appears in A and B the regional info is still being processed, they occured 5/17. Schedule info & qualifier lists with seeds can be had here:
