Gotta love the Bay State! One thing I've always wondered, though...

Is it the "Bay State League" or the "Bay State Conference"?

Now, only 4000 more posts until we rival the old Hock thread...

It's about time someone started a bay state thread. I was wondering how fast it would take to compete in the 800 this year.

rebeljumper

theres a handful of really good 800 runners but they can move around to different races, so actually racing them might not happen. but im guessing you would have to run like 2:10 or below, maybe less.

Brookline vs. Newton North: Newton North is the favorite and has the home court, but the underdog Brookline has been crushing its early season competition and is as good a team as any to finally strip Newton North of their who-knows-how-many-th consecutive league title!

Old Blue Eyes

Weezy smashed out a 50.5 split on the winning 4x400 at all states in 2004. Still needed Wofsy to bail the team out. Wofsy"s at Harvard and won't be walking thru the door so Weezy needs to start smashing out some fast times. Not enough to be the best sophomore ( what about Stewart?). NN won't repeat in the big one without Weezy doing some smashing.

NN Boys win, nn girls win. However, (I don't really know the nn boy's situation)the nn girl's definately have some competition:

Sabrina Parise is a beast in the 800 and is going to be tough for nn girls to compete with because she gets around 2 30.

I'm not sure what event brookline freshman Kara Aldaheff is put in but she was great in the 600 in indoors. I think she went 1 42's which is intense as a frosh. Hopefully she'll do either the 800 or 400 but i dont remember seeing her name on the scouting report.

For the 400 I know of one brookline girl who can run a 62.2 i think. Even so, nn Simone Weisman hasnt gotten gotten any worse than 61.8 all year so she'll win.

B line's 4 x 100 i hear is amazing whereas our team is just mediocre with lily brown, arielle dembe, azuree catledge, and leah weisman.

So..yep, that might be a little hard for the girls..

Many very fast races, with NN stepping up to beat Brookline by plenty. Carpenter (50.1), Slifer (50.7) go 1-2 in 400. Slifer also wins 200. Polgar takes mile in 4:38, Chebot second in 4:41. Noah Jampol 2:05 in the 800, a half second ahead of teammate Evan Morse.

Two mile was the race of the day. Brookline freshman Robert Gibson ran 9:58 (Best time in MA for a freshman?)...and did not score! Barnicle (9:38), Brecher (9:52), Lloyd (9:54) took top three spots. Also in the deuce, Matias Carrasco ran with Barnicle for about five laps, splitting 4:49 at the mile, but faded badly in the last 800m to finish over 10:00. The 4x400 was intense, with NN just edging out Brookline, both teams in 3:33.

Although NN took all the close races, making the meet look like a rout, Brookline is a good young team and will get a lot better.

Old Blue Eyes
04-26-2005, 11:18 PM
Doug Brecher(9.52) and Clayton Lloyd (9.54) followed Barnicle(9.38) in what has to be the best 2-mile sweep in a dual meet. Polgar and Chebot make 5 NN runners who can run under 10 minutes. ...Carpenter continues to win 4 events in every meet--46'1", 50.1, 5'10", and anchor on 3.33 relay. Weezy runs 51.0 split on no practice and Slifer tunes up for Penn with 50.6 open 400. Polgar cruises to 4.38 and is aiming for 3.10 at Penn. in dmr. Greenidge looks ready to become North's fourth on the 4x400 at states, as well as their best on the 4x100, long jump, and right behind carpenter in the tj(43'). Xaverian still looks tough.

Well Kyle Greenidge upset Courtney Evans with a long jump of 22'9" to beat Evans' 22'7", what was more shocking which I turned my head just in time to see was the jump he fouled on. He went out of the pit fell on his face and was 5 feet in the air. He fouled by 4 inches and the distance was 24'7'' but a foul. Purely athleticism to a ridiculous point. In the TJ Kyle beat Jed again 44'9'' to 44'4'' I believe. Onto running in the mile Clay took doug in the final 50 to win in 4:47. I won the 800 in 2:03. The deuce 3 more from NNHS under 10 minutes, Evan Morse in 9:55, Polgar and Chebot two seconds back. Jed won the 400 in 53.3, Kneisel ran 53.9! Slifer won the 200 I think. Evans won the 100, and that all I know. Final score 85 to 46 NNHS.

Norwood's 4x100 looks like it will be tough to beat at Natick on Wednesday. But North's 44.9 with a bad pass could rise up. Milton would be the favorite, however. North runs it at Hartford on Saturday. Also at Hartford, Barnicle-Polgar and Carpenter-Greenidge will be interesting. Not to overlook Carpenter-Slifer. And the Weezy led 4x400 will up against the big boys. At Lowell Brecher seeks to go under 9.50 and Morse under 4.30 and Jampol under 2.00. Too bad we can't be in two places at once.

Everybody from Brookline good job on sat. That was just a little taste of what is to come. The 4x4 was a joke for Brookline, third leg sof ( Matt Stewart) ran 53.xx alone he was about 5 seconds ahead of second place. They put them into the slowest heat . If they were in the fastest heat there is no doubt in my mind that they would have run sub 3:23.

Well, you called him "the short kid"

Not really polite, y'know?

In other news, Weston Invitational. What a damp and dismal meet.

On the NN side (as far as I know):

Slipher wins the 400. Uh... by a lot.
Morse wins the mile. Uh... by a lot.
4x100 wins. Uh... by a lot.
Robinson wins the 100. Uh... by not as much.
Kneisel... loses the 200. **** >_>

4x400 doesn't run due to Carpenter injury (Carpenter not present at meet)

Loved the spelling of "Slipher"...

Also, there's nothing wrong with calling someone short if they are short. Everyone knows who Smitty's talking about. Besides, Smitty used a physical description to identify himself, and it's not like he was being intentionally insulting. I think BrooklineRunner must accept the blame for taking that discussion to the level of "verbal murder"...

We always do. And we always stay on top.

I can't speak for cross country; however, we have 2 or 3 who can go sub 10 in the 2 mile, arguably the best returning middle distance runner in the state, one of the better and runners in the 100 (back for 2 more years), and the youngest, deepest throwing team in the state, including the number 1 or 2 returning shot putter (back for 2 more years). And that doesn't include the surprises who will step up.

I'm hoping ideally for 9-2, with losses to Brookline and Newton North.

That would be quite a leap, but go for it. Wellesley should be good, better than Brookline anyway. Isn't Weymouth good too? How many good runners do you guys have? I'm sorry, but I don't remember much about your team.

Oh, I thought Brookline was better than Wellesley because Brookline absolutely smoked us. I've heard that Weymouth was senior heavy, so I was assuming they wouldn't be as strong this season.

Brookline is overrated, Wellesley is not. And a 9-2 season for a Needham team that did not have any runners in the top 30 at last year's BSC meet may be a bit optimistic. Weymouth graduated their #3 & #4, but the rest are back. And don't discount Walpole, Milton, or Natick. I'm sorry, but I don't see Needham beating more than one or two of those teams. I predict another 6-5 for Needham. I hope you prove me wrong.

I think Brookline will be quite strong this year. They have a good shot at going to the All-States as a team.

Carrasco, Gibson, Kaye, Eisenberg-Guyot, Blattler, Eliot Lehane, Greg Williams.

That's a lot of talent.

What teams are in the Bay State League?

Brookline,
Newton North
Wellesley
Needham
Weymouth
Walpole
Milton
Natick
Dedham

who else?

Is Newton South in the Bay State League? THey will be pretty good this year. They return their top 4, and 6 of 7.

I'm not feeling it. I've got to agree that Brookline is overrated. In recent years they have really sh*t the bed in November. Add to that the fact that they are in D1 and they may not even make the top 10 let alone the top 5. They may have some talent, but they have a boat load of problems that have plagued them in recent years and those issues are still there.

They certainly should be contenders, but I'll go with NN until someone proves they are better. I believe NN last lost a meet in 2000 (someone please correct me if I am wrong). I'll ride that horse.

Any predictions on the girls side? Wellesley and NN should battle for the #1 spot, but who else will be top teams?

I think Wellesleys got to be the favorite, but don't count out those Tigers. After that, it's probably Weymouth and Natick. They're usually pretty good teams.

Man that's gonna be a close meet. Tough to decide but I'll agree with poly and say Brookline. Home field advantage could be a factor here seeing as Brookline's is one of the toughest in the league, though I've never ran on Newton's course.

You folks are all forgetting about Wellesley. I'm not exactly sure who is returning for them, but I believe they have #1 and #3 back at least. This for a team that finished between NN and Brookline at the conference meet AND had a JV team that just dominated that race (6 of the top 11) while destroying both NN and Brookline (and everyone else!). They've got a legitimate shot at the title.

polyxc

Wellesley is definitely a strong contender. They had a great JV! Also a strong 1-3.

If Wellesley can get a couple of the young guys to step up and stengthen the 4-5 positions, they will be excellent. Brookline's strength is in their depth.

1. Carrasco BR
2. Mayell W

14.Crane, Stephen W

Should be real competition in the Bay State League in the post-Barnicle era. Led by the Brookline miler, the Warriors look like the team to beat. NN has a great 1-2 punch(Brecher is in top shape) and a strong 3rd. They have 40 returning to come up with some others. NN has a 45 meet winning streak on the line this season. David Polgar has also never lost a meet and wants to match Barnicle's 98-0 four year record (xc,indoor,& outdoor). Will be a challenge.

Assuming Carrasco, Mayell, Meade, and Gibson are all fit and healthy when they toe the line, it will NOT turn out like this. Carrasco won't beat any of the other three. I'm not sure Mayell and/or Meade can beat Gibson. It's true about Mayell not training last summer, this year will be different. Also, a year ago Meade was a football player running cross for the first time ever--he comes into this season with a 4:31 mile PR.

I've got to agree with Old Fart. I don't see MC even beating all of his own teammates let alone the top guys from NN and Wellesley. He has some running talent, but not enough to beat the best runners in the BSC. Look what he did last year when he ran against Wellesley at that easy Natick course. He'll have some very good races and may even be a top 5 guy at the BSC meet, but Brookline's got better than him.

j.j.putz

this is true that matias has always been a wild card...and he does seem to fade at the end of the season but about the wellesley/brookline meet...as talented as tom mayell is, he did not run a great two mile at track b/c of basketball so he is starting out a different fitness level than matias is

Polgar=How dominant will he be?

Don't really know a lot about him, but it seems like he could become the bay state's dominant runner with enough training.

JV=Whose had jv seasons in xc last year (or none at all) and showed up big when it came to the track? I know from a certain inside source that used to be on the team last year that they (NN) have some extra weapons of mass destruction.

This confused me.
