I was looking forward to running in a charity 5k this Saturday. I mentioned it to my coach because it is run completely on streets and I had some shinsplints about 10 days ago or so, they're gone now but my coach 'forbids' me to run in the 5k. I'm looking for any kind of loop hole in the IHSA rulebook that says I can run in a charity event. I can't win money or anything, it's completely for charity. The top 3 places get a glass star for a trophy, so it's not like I'm running for money.
If anyone can find some sort of loop hole in the rules for me that would be great. I would also be very appreciative if someone could make up an excuse that my coach would believe - unfortunately he ins't very gullible.
Thanks for the help.

If you wanna do a 5K so bad, go run one on yourself, there's a loophole. Or, if you're doing it to donate to the charity, just donate without being in the race. Why risk eligibility. People do races while in season, I know people who have done it, not 5K's, but charity runs like in chicago. So if it's big and you're bandit/alias, you can get away with it, but that's about it.

I'm thinking of registering as a one "Pee Wee Herman"---then again, I don't have to worry about all this, so maybe I'll just enter and win it now that I'm back in shape again.

My coach told me that the rule is that you can run in any competitive running event that is a distance that is not contested in the IHSA series. I asked because I wanted to run a steeplechase in a college open meet and he said it would be OK. The college wouldn't let me run it.

Definately man, if it's for charity, then who gives a damn who runs it or what name you decide to write down when you sign up.
In fact, don't even tell anyone you ran it. They'll never know as long as you utilize a generic name.

Jippers Bronfman? You gotta be pretty fast to use that name. I hear Jippers beat Rexing when he was still in 6th grade pumping out 110 miles a week.

I had some shinsplints about 10 days ago or so
Why would you want to run on the road if you recently had shinsplints?

Well my shins are fine now.
The charity is Make-A-Wish Foundation.
I can't go under a fake name becuase I know between 1/2 and 2/3 of the people working at it.
Also, pretty much the only reason I wanna run is because I could probably place top 3 and maybe win it now that I'm in shape. So... I guess I don't have to run it, but I wouldn't mind showing off a little bit.
About that post that said I could run anything that isn't an IHSA race, does that mean in-season or not. Also, since the race is a 5k (about 3.1 miles) and we run a 3 mile in cross-country, is that enough of a difference that I could run it without being worried? If so, I think I found my loop hole.

you are making the situation worse by making it public, but having that said, who in the hell would actually care enough to turn someone in?

just go to somone you know who works for it and be like "I wanna race but it's against IHSA rules, so I'm going to donate my race fee to the charity and then bandit the race, is that okay?"

You can do road races during the track season. As someone before me pointed out, it is okay as long as the distance is not one that is contested by the IHSA. I have run several road races during high school and so have many other people that I know, and none of us has ever had any trouble. Even with the winning og prizes, just make sure you donate the winnings to charity if it is over the limit set by the IHSA. I'm not sure what dollar amount this is though, you'll have to look it up or ask your coach.

I've looked up the rule about prizes. Technically you are only allowed to accept a trophy, medal, or cup; but so many people have broken this rule, and it doesn't matter, and noone cares. (As long as it's not money.)
I could probably place top 3 and maybe win it
So, how was the race; just wondering?

In case there is anything that was never cleared up about this: this is what the rules say and I confirmed this with IHSA Track & Field contact Ron McGraw.
It doesn't matter the distance, but during the track season you cannot do any field event the IHSA has or do any track race of any distance. Any other type of races (road, cross country, trail...) are not against that rule.
