Which is better for highschool throwing for the Shot? Glide, power, or rotation?

Personally I think Glide is the best for you average varsity thrower. Rotation is more for the people who are at the point where they have to do something different to get it to go farther. I do glide, nothing special.

Do shoes help? I really don't think they do at the HS level. I just get a pair of shoes to start the season off, by the time conference championships come around, they're pretty good, nice and smooth, or at least a little warn down.

throwing shoes help a lot for spinners. normal shoes would be either too slow or too fast and difficult to control a spin. personally, i think the spin is the best but very very difficult to master. there are so many little details to the spin that you could easily learn to do it wrong.

The coaches at my school teach all of the new putters the to power first then as they get older/better they introduce the glide. I can only think of one thrower that they taught the spin to in the past few years and it was becuase he was a bit smaller and more agile. I am no throwing expert but I'd say in general the spin is the most difficult as well as the most effective, especially for the smaller throwers.

Our program(junior high to high school) teaches power first , then everyone learns rotational. Those who know the glide have the option to keep doing it, but even those out for the first time learn rotational.

my coach said the best thing to me a few weeks ago that the gilde is what you do when the thrower is still young and developing then once they are older and everything has formed and stopped growing you can start learning the spin that is the way i will do it and that is the way i think makes senes atleast to me and as for shoes i like them because they kinda keep me up on the balls of my feet.

Shoes definitely make a difference I improved about 8 feet with a change in gliding style and the switch to throwing shoes. I really think that the discus is the place to have the shoes. It is the event where they are the most important.

I use the glide, but would rather spin. Our best thrower used the spin until last week. His pr was 50', he changed back to glide and added four feet. Our coach does not really get the spin, so the glide is better.

Shoes are a must. Discus especially, you wouldn't run without spikes don't throw without throwing shoes.

Our throwers started using rotational and it has shown improvement.

The spin is the best and most impressive to watch.

it depends on the thrower's body type, but generally, assuming it is taught correctly, you want to slide until you max out then spin. we had a kid who threw 48' then started to spin and threw 59' by seasons end. after that the spin caught on a bit in our area. on the other hand, i have a much better spin than i do a glide, so i spin even though im not that good. i think i am the exception rather than the rule

I think that power throws arent that helpful. I prefer the glide is the best to use until you have complete control and have had enough practice ( about a season or two at least). Also shoes do help but dont go out and spend all that money until you know that you are going to stick with it and you have been doing it for a few years.

Power is easier then glide is is easier than spin
Spin can throw farther then glide can throw farther than spin

Between glide and spin, glide is more consistant, but spin has more potential. I was at a meet where a guy threw 51 6 on his first throw with the spin, and fouled his next five throws. At the class meet, he fouled his three throws and didnt even make the finals =/

Is that a joke? I'd love to see that attempted with anything other than a girl's shot.....

damn! i always thought that would be a good throwing method after watching a fairly agile guy on our schools soccer team do it for throw ins. he could throw a soccer ball more than halfway across the field, it was crazy. Only problem is you need to be more agile (both girls were probably gymnasts first) so you can't really picture a strong girl like michelle carter pulling off that technique. It looked awesome though.....I wonder how far they put it.

I don't do neither of those ways. :D I actually do a slide across thing. I thought I and others at my school were the only ones who did it.. but i saw more people at the state meet do it. Has anyone heard anything about this technique, i myself started shot last spring and have done well with this method. I hopefully want to go to college.. do you think it would be acceptable.

i threw with a glide for 2 seasons and just made small improvements but was pretty consistent, then i started to do the spin and had a 3 foot improvement, but didnt throw as consistently as i did in the glide. the thing is gliders will be very consistent at a certain distance whereas rotators will not be as consistent but on any given day can hit a big throw. also, power throws should be used just for warm-ups
