Brandon Jarrett wasnt thinking about times or records when he took his position on the starting line at yesterdays Essex County Championships.
But after a blistering 4:37 first mile and a 5:08 second, those thoughts began creeping into the mind of Jarrett, a junior at St. Benedicts Prep in Newark.
When I heard 9:45 at two miles I figured I might as well go for the record, he said. I was feeling good, so I started to push myself even more.
Jarrett not only got the course record on the lightning-fast, 3.1-mile layout at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, he obliterated it. Jarrett crossed first in 15:02.9, slashing more than 25 seconds off the former record of 15:28.3 set in 2004 by Brian Trembley of Seton Hall Prep.
I knew I had a chance at it, but I never expected my time to be that low, Jarrett, second last year in 15:41.6, said. With a little more than a half-mile left, my coach (assistant Rafael Sanchez) was yelling to me that if I picked it up, I could get I. So I mentally pushed myself and gave it one final burst.
Jarrett also led St. Benedicts, one of the top programs in the state, to the team title with 39 points. Runner-up and defending champion Millburn was second with 63.
Jarrett now has three impressive victories this month. He ran a 15:42 at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel and a 15:12.1 at the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island, plus he had a 12:31.4 for 2.5 miles to take second at the Manhattan Invitational. Jarrett said his goal all season has been to qualify for nationals, and to do that he will have to finish in the top 10 at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional next month.
I know I have to run a fast first mile at the regionals and thats what I did today, he said. It feels good to know I can handle that pace. All these races keep building my confidence for regionals.
In the team competition, St. Benedicts put together its best race of the season, averaging 16:09.2. Millburn led, 12-16, after each team had three runners across, but St. Benedicts fourth and fifth runners, Jervais Thomas and Kevin Branco, beat Millburns fourth to ice the victory.
Last year, St. Benedicts was second to Millburn, 48-62.
Weve been mentally set all season to beat Millburn, Jarrett said. We didnt want the same thing as last year to happen.
