Therefore we wouldn't have the Harris v.s. Farnell dream of a classic run. Or having Ulrey/McNamara thing going on. We'll know who the bets is and there would be nohthing to discuss then. I think it could work. We might need regionals like in cross country. then have sectionals. thoughts?

Ummm... I think they experimented with that - for about 70 years. Not as many Class A athletes make it. That's why they changed in the first place, like in 1977?

How do you expect school with 500 students to compete against school with 2,000 students?

chances are the school with 500 will suck. It will give the best to go with the best.

So since Eureka has around 500 students then they automatically suck? Stereotypes like that don't always hold water.

If a small school had a coach like york they would, but it is a plus, a huge plus, to be a class AA school rather than a class A school.

In class A you have to worry about getting guys out for the team, sports like football and soccer really take away a lot of good talent from CC. I am not sure if even the great Newton could take a crappy class A school and bring it to the elite ranks, especially when he might only have 8 guys out for the team rather then 150.

the reason why york is so good year in and year out is cause XC and Track are THE sport at elmhurst. not football (like most schools), not basketball, baseball, soccer.....but running.

Part of the reason York is so good is because they get as many freshmen as they can every year to come out. They send some kids over to the high school on freshmen orientation day and they sign kids up. More schools should do this. If you can get even 25 freshmen out every year you are going to have a solid team. A school of 500 could do a similar thing, and get maybe 15 kids out as freshmen. You figure at least 2-3 of those kids will be decent, which means you will have 8-12 solid runners on your team. Small numbers can still mean success. If you look at Eureka, look at how many kids followed in their brothers footsteps. Success breeds more success. Just my two cents.

I don't think its possible for a school of 500 to get 15 kids out unless its an extrardinary circumstance. 500 kids with a 50/50 gender split means 250 guys, meaning 62-63 guys in each class. Is it really possible to get 24% of a freshman class to run cross country?

York has 2448. A roughly 50/50 split and dividing into classes is roughly 306 guys. York gettin 25 of these is 8.2% of their incoming freshman guys, and this is what we are using as a referance for good. These small school just cant match what york does as them getting 15 kids is equivlant to york getting 75 or so, and well to all of our chagrin this aint gonna happen.

Eureka gets on average 15 guys out for the entire team. Maybe 3-4 freshman if we're lucky. Charlton just does an incredible job of getting the guys who do come out to be motivated and dedicated.

Well yeah, that's about what our team was like in high school. We had small numbers (1375-1400) but were able to create a solid team.

It is possible though with the right coaching. Eureka is no exception either. Your high school obviously doesn't have the large numbers, being single A, but you guys definitley put out a team that could compete very well with AA schools in cross country and in track.

...Hey Brightside, before I forget, man you had an awesome track season! Keep up the good work.

Newton's book, Coaching Cross Country Successfully, is fantastic. In his early years as a coach, his team was minute and just plain bad. It's amazing what an inspirational person can accomplish.

My team had 8 seniors and 1 sophmore. A problem at my school is high sports fees. It cost 135$ a sport, it is hard to convince freshmen to pay to run.
