Well if them getting knocked down seriously affected them, then I guess I dont feel as bad they did terrible, but still its pretty dissapointing on York's part, but I didnt expect anything from them this year. It didnt feel them same as last year...I dont see york ever repeating for a long time, especially since newton is gettin older and it seems like york is gettin less prestigious There was no buzz around them this year and nobody seemed to excited for them at NTN.

8th is pretty disappointing, but when we find out more information about who fell and see official results, 8th after having 2-4 of your top guys fall down is pretty good

Two Ohio teams in the bottom 7 with the team from Wyoming, maybe Wyoming beat one of them?

It appears both...apparently they were in 19th place after the 1k...which can be attributed to the pileup. I didn't watch the race though, so I don't know how long it took the pileup to clear up, or how bad it really was.

Its a shame that there was such a huge pile up in the race because York really had to fight back just to get 10th. That in itself was a huge feat for them. Also it seemed like smulkin and Fry ran pretty well to get 33 and 36 after being in the middle of the pile. Also Alan (the schnoz) Dambrogrio ran an amazing to be Yorks #5 man and get 55 place which was the 2nd best 5th man today! Im not saying York definately would have won because Bridgetwon ran great today but, it woudl it would be pretty close.

Also does anyone know how many Bridgetown runners if any were involved in the pile up? By looking at the results it doesnt seem like any of them were though.

From the film it looked like York had 3 runners get back up in last place. As a team they didn't move outside at the start like they usually do. Very bunched up at the first turn with a pole in the way also. And I thought the sectional courses were tight at the start.

york's place is probably a factor of both the pileup and not running well. other teams had runners in the pileup too, and i'm guessing some teams that beat york were affected too.

12-03-2006, 02:11 AM
I'm actually going to say it's just because of the pileup...not that I am making excuses, because these types of things happen, but the fact that they were able to move up after falling like that is impressive. I fell down in 2 races last year and my momentum and energy was just totally wasted that I couldn't speed up (1 of the times happened in the beginning like this one). I don't think they would have necessarily won, but judging from their spread and how their 5th guy was the number 2 fifth guy...they probably could have been top 3

They were nearly dead last and had to try and make up the time lost over the remaining 4000 meters against the best teams in the nation. You get in a race at this level and something like this is pretty much fatal to your chances.

It's obvious that Fry and Achtien were the ones really hurt by the pileup, they were projected to be nearer the front, so they had to make up even more time against the best runners from each team. The fact that Achtien was York's 4th runner shows how much it affected their race.

Had they finished around 15th and 20th, which would be a reasonable placing, I figure York would've finished anywhere from 2nd to 4th. As it was, they were only 22 points out of 5th even with the scrum.

At least Nike was able to provide the conditions to get an accurate look at who the best team in the nation is.

It was messy last year too. Perhaps they should move it.... I know their going for the spectator friendly cousre, but I'm actually pretty disapoined that the best course nike can find in all of oregon for an XC national race is a horse track.

He went down twice.

Completly different situation. When you fall twice over two haybales somewhere around 2 or 3k, if I remember correctly, is much different than falling down in the first 300 meters when the whole pack is still together. There wasn't a mob around him pushing him around. He was basically by himself, implying no one was around him who caused the fall, and just clipped the haybales.

I know what your getting at. Dont discredit Bridgeton's win just cuz york was caught in a pile up. I didnt see the race but running smart and avoiding (if possible) situations that could result in pile ups such as not getting stuck in a pack are parts of being a good cross country team. York deserve to be taken out, but all the runners not caught up should probably be credited with running smart.

Also, next week, I'm hoping no one makes the, "ya he won FL but evan would have beat him" post.

hell ill make the post right now:

Whoever wins next week would have been beat by Evan Jager, however that doesn't matter cuz Jager choked and whoever wins next week is the legitamate national champion

Then don't bother saying that because there are no guarantees that jager would have won.. just like their are no guarantees that he would qualify.

Is the spectator part the whole reason??? Where in Oregon would most CC runners choose??? Could they have it on a college course???

They have two other real choices...

One is the site of the Nike Jim Danner meet, which is an extremely fast course. (Colleges have a meet on it, I'm pretty sure)

The other is the Fort Vancouver site, where they held USATF Championships a couple years ago.
