U. to Discontinue Men's Track/Cross Country Program (http://utahutes.collegesports.com/sports/c-track/spec-rel/051805aaa.html)

Move designed to improve funding for other sports
May 18, 2005

SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah has discontinued its men's track and field and cross country programs in a move designed to redirect funds to help strengthen other sports, Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill announced today.

Scholarships for the discontinued sports will be honored should the student-athletes choose to remain at Utah. Releases will be offered to those who wish to transfer to other schools, where they will be eligible to participate immediately.

"We have never been able to fund men's cross country and track at a level that would allow us to have realistic team goals. The reality is that we believe a reallocation of resources will strengthen our other programs that we believe have more potential for success. Some of our programs are not fully-funded and this will give us a chance to get closer to that goal," said Hill. "The timing of this decision may seem unusual since we are in compliance with gender equity, but after a careful review of our athletics program, we felt a change was needed for our overall well being."

The move will free up five scholarships, as well as travel, equipment and coaching dollars for other sports. The U. will sponsor 18 sports starting in fall of 2005: 11 for women (basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, gymnastics, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball) and seven for men (baseball, basketball, football, golf, skiing, swimming and diving and tennis).

A national search will begin immediately for a director of Utah's women's cross country and track and field programs.

they should have cut mens golf, tennis and diving. they all suck and arent even athletic sports (dont try and argue that point with me). or cut the undefeated football team...

the U didnt even try to build their team and for the last few years its gone down hill until finally they just cut it.

they probably werent even full scholarships anyway. most coligiate running programs split their scolarships so more money can go around whereas third string freshmen football players get full rides. of course, the director of athletics is usually in bed with the football coach.

to cut the program alltogether is bureaucratic bull crap. they could have continued to fund the program (which doesnt cost a lot yet still wasnt fully funded) and pinched pennys somwhere else but once again the runners get craped on.

looks like Title 9 is working really good, looks like there is plenty of equality between men and women's sports. (<sarcasm, if you didn't notice.) I think the NCAA is stupid and should realize it isn't working, and make that rule only apply to sports that boys and girls both have. Male runners have been getting screwed for way too long, because of Football. (figures, that's how it is in high school too.)
By the way, how are they going to run just a women's Track and XC team without a men's program? that seems weird.

yeah. title IX does suck but the U's track and field program wasnt cut to create equality. it was to redirect funds. an article in the deseret news said the school was already in compliance with title IX.

if there were no girls on the team i was running for, id transfer

The speculation was out there sometime before the program was actually cut and their lack of signees ended any slight momentum to prevent this from happening.

It is unfortunate that you'd assume it took me "3 weeks to realize it" just because I didn't rush and post it on this message board. I am a casual follower on the board and not someone that posts 10 posts a day.

The purpose of the post was for discussion on a topic that anyone who plans to run competitively beyond high school (or any true enthusiast of the sport) should be concerned with. I can now see I posted this on the wrong board.

it's all good. just so you know, i ran sub 4:40 a few times this year so maybe tara just didn't give you the right update or something. i shouldn't even say anything though because that still sucks. i know i'm not fast but i don't try to make people think i'm fast either.

the real high school cross country national championship isn't even USATFXC, it's the footlocker national championships. so, as long as you keep that "all american" in quotation marks you should be fine, because that's what it is.
i'm not saying you're not good - i think you are good - it's just interesting when good runners try to make everyone believe that they're great runners. there's no hatin' though

Is that how you treat all of your friends...by telling them they are slow? I think you have an inferiority complex, and you think that everyone will think you are cool if you brag about what you can do. I think all it's done is made you look like a c ocky idiot. You give a bad name to our sport, and i don't wanna talk to you anymore. believe it or not, but the u is a fairly conservative school, as far as national standards go. but i don't want to argue that.

i must admit i wondered the same thing aaron. five scholarships, that's not too much money, maybe $50 grand (four year full tuition). considering the fact that the football team made at least $5 MILLION when they won the fiesta bowl, that is a small percentage (about 1 percent, to be precise). will five scholarships (or one percent), one way or the other, really make a difference in the athletic department's fiscal policy?

i agree. thats a good question. its not a lot of money. is the football program so greedy they cant part with a mere one percent of their five million to allow a handfull of runners to continue their runnning.

did the DA even consider other options?

the U has turned its back on collegiate running. even if they do reconsider and end up keeping mens running, who would run for a school who cares so little for their runners?

About the hippies: i agree. nationwide, the U isnt that far left. but compared to most utah schools, especially USU and BYU, its way out there.

tommy boy, maybe it would have been funny if it actually went along with anything that had to do with this.

Actually it did make sense. See you said you didnt understand what i was saying and i was teaching you how to read. congrats you passed first grade.

can i have your autograph? i understand you might not have time for fans like me but i would really appreciate it.

you guys were saying how i am probaly just some no name runner so i was telling you that i am one of the top guys in washington. So if you like to be a smart ass about it then dont go talking smack about us. I never said you guys werent good runners. You might be better then me for all I know. But all i was saying is that i can keep up with some of the top guys in the nation on a good day. If you want real proof of that go check out the results from the 2004 Stanford XC invite. I was 11th place in the seeded race. 13th or 14th overall on the day. So if you were ahead of me then congrats on a good race. But dont say how im not a good runner when i can compete.

you're so full of yourself, it's funny. no one ever said you weren't a good runner - you made that all up in your little head so that you could tell us about how good you were. seriously - that's great that you're fast (and no, i'm sure we're not faster than you), but that doesn't have anything to do with you not being an idiot

dude i coulda sworn bandit said i was a nobody. maybe i was wrong. ok i dont mean to come across as cocky but i get pretty pissed off when people talk trash about me when they have never seen me run or run against me. as far as being an idiot i just want to know why you think i am an idiot. If you can give me a good reason then yes i will shut up. or at least i will be willing to talk you know "real running" with you guys. I really have no disrespect towards you guys or your running. I just want to know why you have such a problem with me.

this whole freakin thread is over. i win. everyone needs to shut up. Utah and WA. nobody is making sense, except heidi who had a good point. go argue on the washington board. and all the good threads, the stupid ones i make, are being bumped down. ive only got one thing to say to you washington people-

you guys ever climb rainier? thats one sweet mountain. if i lived in WA, i would 10 times a summer. and washington cherries... oh man.

i never said you weren't fast, i said you were c ocky, because you are. the problem with you and your buddy is that you are trying to demand respect from people who have no respect for you. You may be a very talented runner, good for you. But that doesn't mean that you don't need to shut up.

The only reason i am not "shutting UP" even though i have posted 3-4 times on this board is cuz bandit or w/e his name is was talking smack about my friend and i backed my friend up and then he got pissed at me for backing my friend up which he said is what you are supposed to do.

WOW! I, being really bored and not having been on dye stat for a while just read this entire thread. I haven't seen such a argumentative and heated thread since the Davis/Mountain View arguments (but maybe I just missed the others). By the way, I looked at the Stanford invite results and just wanted to tell EgreenRun1443 great job. That race looked like it had some stiff competition and that is an impressive time/place! By the way, where are you planning on running in college?
